I. Book introduction
Onyx Storm is a fantasy novel written by Rebecca Yarros and published by Red Tower Books. Released on January 21, 2025, it is the third book in the fantasy romance Empyrean series, after Fourth Wing and Iron Flame.
The book was listed on bestseller charts by August 2024 due to pre-orders.
After nearly eighteen months at Basgiath War College, Violet Sorrengail knows thereâs no more time for lessons. No more time for uncertainty.
Because the battle has truly begun, and with enemies closing in from outside their walls and within their ranks, itâs impossible to know who to trust.
Now Violet must journey beyond the failing Aretian wards to seek allies from unfamiliar lands to stand with Navarre. The trip will test every bit of her wit, luck, and strength, but she will do anything to save what she lovesâher dragons, her family, her home, and him.
Even if it means keeping a secret so big, it could destroy everything.
They need an army. They need power. They need magic. And they need the one thing only Violet can findâthe truth.
But a storm is coming…and not everyone can survive its wrath.
The Empyrean series is best enjoyed in order.
- Book #1 Fourth Wing
- Book #2 Iron Flame
- Book #3 Onyx Storm
Background
Onyx Storm is the third book in Rebecca Yarros’s Empyrean series, which is planned to include five books. The first book, Fourth Wing, chronicles the protagonist Violet’s first year at the fictional Basgiath War College, where she becomes a dragon rider. The second book, Iron Flame, follows Violet and her friends and allies as they work to fight evil magic-wielders.
Although Iron Flame (November 2023) came out only about six months after Fourth Wing (May 2023), Yarros said that she would not write Onyx Storm as quickly. It was ultimately scheduled for release on January 21, 2025, more than a year after Iron Flame’s release.
When announcing the book’s release, Yarros said it would include “politics, new adventures, old enemies and of course, dragons”.
The book’s cover was released on July 8, 2024. A reviewer from Today said that its dark design “signals an ominous turn in the series”.
Plot
After the events of Iron Flame, the kingdoms of Navarre and Poromiel, together with leaders of the recent revolution in Navarre’s province of Tyrrendor, negotiate an uneasy alliance in order to fight an invading army of evil magic-wielders known as venin. Violet eavesdropping on their conversation and deciding she will find a cure for Xaden, no matter the cost. In the weeks that follow, we see the marked ones and Violet being on guard duty for Xaden at all times. Xaden remains at Basgiath War College inside the wards, to restrain himself from channeling again.
Meanwhile, the iron squad visits Sawyer, who is adjusting to life as an amputee, while Lynx and Aaric’s failure to manifest signets raises concerns. A fresh attack on Basgiath leaves them reeling, and Violet has a chilling encounter with a silver-haired venin. After Basgiath is secured, Violet and Xaden prepare for the meeting with the Senarium the council of all nobles of Navarre. Knowing that Andarna, Violet’s second dragon, is of the seventh dragon breed needed to power the wardstone in Aretia, Violet is sent on a quest to find the missing breed but must first fulfill her deal with Viscount Tecarus safely deliver the fliers to Basgiath for unlimited access to his library.
Mira arrives with a new conduit for Violet and intel on tempering runes. Just as the Senarium moves to dismiss the fliers, Violet’s squad nullifies the rune blocking their channeling, salvaging the truce with Poromiel. General Aetos accuses Violet of treason, but a royal missive preemptively pardons all dragon riders who went to Aretia and reinstates Xaden as Duke of Tyrrendor.
As punishment, the Iron Squad is sent to Samara by Dain’s father. When a nearby village is attacked, they rush into battle, uncovering shocking truths: Garrick has a second signet, Theophanie the silver-haired venin is a Maven who wants to mentor Violet when she turns, and Andarna is an irid. Xaden later reveals that many marked ones wield two signets because their dragons chose them for a purpose. Violet begins to suspect venin can wield similarly to dragon riders.
While Xaden is away, Violet sharpens her skills and repeatedly visits Jack Barlowe, searching for answers only to find none. A breakthrough comes in the archives when she realizes her father’s final research might be connected to the venin. She enlists Dain to steal it from his father’s office, and he delivers, leaving her with pages of secrets and a riddle to decode.
Basgiath ramps up war preparing, adding a new class led by Xaden. Enter Prince Halden Navarre’s crown prince and, as Xaden soon learns, Violet’s ex-best friend. After a brief scuffle, Halden delivers a message from Tecarus, arranging a meeting with King Courtlyn of Deverelli in exchange for a powerful relic lost in venin-infested Anca. Their conversation helps Violet crack her father’s riddle, which also leads to Deverelli.
Violet, Xaden, Mira, and an unreliable squad set off for Anca, retrieve the relic, and are immediately ambushed or losing two squad members. Enraged, Violet demands control of the mission. The new squad consists of Ridoc, Xaden, Dain, Mira, Maren, Tragen, Cat, her cousin Drake, and unfortunately Halden and his guard.
In magic less Deverelli, Xaden finally finds relief, but the lack of power unsettles their dragons. While Halden meets with King Courtlyn, Violet retrieves her father’s books after a grueling test. Before they can leave, Halden is arrested, forcing Xaden to approach the king as the Duke of Tyrrendor, with Violet as his consort. Halden’s tantrum escalates into a fight, and Xaden loses control, channeling from the earth once again. Violet with the help of Tairn and Andarna, her dragons, orchestrates a ploy and secures an alliance.
Back in Basgiath, the squad prepares to continue their journey. Xaden shows up in Basgiath and Violet notices the flecks in his eyes are no longer golden but permanently amber, a direct result of his channeling. Aaric, defying orders and risking court-martial, replaces Halden as the royal representative, officially launching the quest.
The first stop is the isle of Soneram. Dain, Xaden and Violet fight for an audience with the Queen. There are no irids on the island, but we do get a weird interaction between Violet and a priestess, revealing that Violet was almost pledged to a Goddess. Next is Hedotis, where a great surprise awaits Xaden’s mother, Talia. Talia is now married to a member of the Hedotis Triumvirate the local council. She tries to rekindle her relationship with her son, but Xaden wants nothing to do with her. The council tests the squad, even poisoning Garrick. Violet anticipates the betrayal and spikes their drinks first, using her father’s research to cure Garrick and secure an alliance.
The third stop is Zellyhna. The island of Zihnal, God of Luck, demands they accept whatever fate deals them. The price as Tragen’s life, who dies from an arrow to the heart. The squad travels to one of the smaller isles to burn his and his gryphon’s body. While the others search the neighboring isles, Violet and Ridoc stay back a while longer. The water and sky seem to ripple, and six giant dragons show up the irids.
The irids recognize Andarna but reject her for fighting in the war, branding her as a weapon. Ridoc also discovers Xaden’s venin secret and demands Violet tell the others. Their mission is officially a failure. The squad returns to Basgiath with a heartbroken Andarna and shattered hopes, only to learn Queen Maraya has been killed and Tecarus has crowned himself King of Poromiel, making Cat third in line for the throne.
Things spiral further when Lynx manifests shadows, proving magic has abandoned Xaden as this generation’s shadow wielder, and he retreats to Aretia. When the squad with Sawyer, follows for their rotation to Aretia, Violet expects a broken man but finds Xaden and Brennan still fighting for a cure.
Later that night, Xaden returns early, confessing he hasn’t channeled in 73 days his goal is 76. They share a passionate night, only to have the same dream, revealing Violet’s second signet is inntinnsic, a dreamwalker. Before they can process it, Aretia is attacked. Violet defends the temple of Dunne, after Aaric’s suggestion, but in their efforts to repel wyvern, Tairn is injured. When Theophanie shows up, Violet defends the priestesses, but luckily when an irid arrives, firing up the Aretia wards the venin vanish.
Andarna faces a choice: stay with Violet and lose her heritage, or leave to reunite with her kind. With unbearable pain, Violet urges her to go. Broken, she spirals into grief until Mira forces her back into action. A new revelation emerges her parents dedicated her to the Goddess Dunne to prevent her from turning venin, and there is a prophecy about her. But in reality the prophecy was about Xaden. When Xaden confesses his truth, Mira immediately moves to kill him. Violet and Brennan intervene, but Mira storms off, feeling betrayed.
Soon after, Garrick returns badly beat up with a message from Theophanie she has Mira and wants Jack Barlowe in exchange for her. With no choice, Violet meets her, only for Theophanie to attempt to kills Jack and slit Mira’s throat. Brennan, who is a powerful mender, tries to heal her, but does not have enough power. That’s when Sloane Mairi and Dain Aetos show up with a message from Aaric who Violet realizes is a precognition. Sloane siphons Dain’s power and transfers it to Brennan, who manages to stabilize Mira.
Violet and Bodhi face Theophanie, who is a storm wielder just like Lilith Sorrengail, Violet’s late mother. General Sorrengail was the balance to Theophanie, and now that she is gone, Violet is not sure she can stop her. Their battle is chaotic and riders are dying left and right; most notable Quinn, Imogen’s best friend. In a twist of fate, Andarna is back and helps Violet kills Theophanie with a piece of Dunne’s temple, whom Theophanie has forsaken. Just then, an onyx storm hits and Violet realizes Xaden has channeled again.
From Xaden’s point of view, we see his choosing to sacrifice his soul to save Violet and Sgaeyl. Violet whispers down their bond before she passes out, the last thing that Xaden hears. He also reveals that Panchek has betrayed them, along with a mysterious. The venin are defeated and Violet wakes up twelve hours later back in Aretia. She is now married to Xaden, legally making her the Duchess of Tyrrendor. But she does not remember anything after asking Imogen to wipe her memory. The novel ends on a mysterious cliffhanger.

1. YAZ reviews for Onyx Storm
Remember when I said if Onyx Storm doesn’t win me over (since I had mixed feelings about Iron Flame) that I would quit the series?
Guess what? Your girl is not quitting!
I can tell Rebecca Yarros really put her her heart and soul into this installment to show us the true potential of this series and where’s it’s headingâand I’ll be eagerly waiting for book 4.
I finished this book in less than 24 hours on it’s release day, so that tells you much about how engrossed I was. I was hooked from start to finish.
This installment expands the world-building and the lore, I was delighted that we got to explore new places and meet new characters whether they’re friends or foes.
And damn, Rebecca can be a sadist. I won’t even explain, experience that yourselves.
When I say this book was a fun ride, it’s not just rainbows and butterflies, this book does take some dark turns and I expect the upcoming books to get even darker and my heart just hurts for all these characters for what happened and what’s to come.
The humor and banter is top-notch, there were several lines and interactions that had got me laughing my ass off! Yarros upped her game with this one.
The theorists are going to eat this book up, there is more lore and answered/un-answered questions to ponder over.
.
.
[General impressions and points with minor spoilers]
.
.
We get a confirmation on what Violet’s second signet is! I knew it wouldn’t be something mind blowing but I’m intrigued. RY was right in saying FW and IF had enough hints for us to guess.
Yes people die.
I adore all of the secondary characters and their friendship with Violet and Xaden, they all get their moments and there’s one particular secondary character I’m glad we got to see more of.
Tairn is hot as ever (hear me out). Andarna as cranky as one would expect of a teenager.
If you were turned off by the melodrama in Iron Flame, I’m happy to say that you won’t be plagued by any exes drama.
Miscommunication trope? Much less thankfully.
To me, the core of this installment is for the characters to learn more about the Venin, to forge political alliances with other Kingdoms, to prepare for War.
We get some new lore on dragons as well for *reasons*.
There is so much at stake that blood had to be spilled and the characters needed to make hard choices or sacrifices.
I’m pleased with Violet and Xaden’s growth, both as individual characters and as a couple. The miscommunication and the drama in Iron Flame felt like it stifled their growth but this time round they’re secure enough in their relationship that everything else seemed insignificant (though they do face challenges so they aren’t just living in romantic bliss and you know why).
I’m very glad I did not give up after Iron Flame, I did not have a list of things I wanted to see in this book but I am satisfied with what I got from Onyx Storm.
I deducted half a star just for teeny tiny reasons.
Now I feel like I’m really invested in the series and I’ll marinate in the lore when I reread.
Note: dear reader, keep in mind that Rebecca Yarros said she will take a break after the release of this book so she can relax and recharge. It’s not true that she won’t continue the series (which is a rumor started by someone). Do not pressure her about the next book, she’ll definitely give us an update once she is ready. Congratulations to Rebecca Yarros and happy release day to Onyx Storm, I hope readers who have been anticipating it enjoy it as much as I did!
2. ALI GOODWIN reviews for Onyx Storm
FIVE FREAKING STARS! sooo gooood!!! If you told me I would’ve given this book 5 stars at the beginning, I wouldn’t have believed you bc I was so confused the first few chaptersđ đ . But then the confusion cleared and this book gave me all the feels fourth wing gave me.
THE ROMANCE! THE WAY XADEN WOULD DIE FOR VIOLET! I will never get enough of this man.
The way Violet would do ANYTHING for the people she cares aboutđ„č I love her w my whole heart.
And the fantasy!! We get to go alllll over the map in this book which was so cool to really explore the world. & There were so many twists and turns (especially at the end!!).
I wish I could read book 4 asap but alas I will be sitting and waiting not so patiently for the next book.
3. MARIANNA MOORE reviews for Onyx Storm
7âïž because 6 stars simply isnât enough. I actually am crawling into my grave and never coming out. I am sick. I am disgusted BY HOW COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY OBSESSED I AM WITH THIS SERIES!!!!!!! I actually canât stop crying. All I know is pain and tears. I cannot form coherent thoughts. I cannot form a concise review because I donât know how to speak. I donât know how to exist? How do I keep living? I canât. Guys this is my new favorite book everâŠ. Like how?! How?!!!!!!!!
Xaden and violet are everything to me. No fictional couple will ever compare. Itâs them or nothing.
VIOLET YOU ARE THAT BITCH AND I WILL DEFEND YOU WITH EVERYTHING I HAVE!!!!!!
Xaden. No donât even start with me. No other fictional man will ever come close. Number 1 forever and always. HOW DID HE GET BETTER IN THIS BOOK?!!!!!! Every time he opened his mouth I folded. Gone. Soul left my body. I cannot think about anything else.
UhmâŠ.. I have so many questions WHAT JUST HAPPENED???????? That ending??? Jail. Jail. Foul. I want to wipe it from my brain. HOW AM I GONNA WAIT YEARS FOR ANSWERS???? Iâm not.
Iâm never reading again because all I know is this book.
4. AMANDA S reviews for Onyx Storm
The excitement, the magic, the battles and love story all come together to create such a scene in your head that itâs like a movie unfolding as you read. Her characters are incredibly personable and realistic, with diseases and handicaps and different lifestyles all being accepted and normal.
The book opens up where iron flame left off (stop reading if you havenât read iron flame or do not want to know anything about onyx storm) with Xaden having turned Venin and Violet being Violet who wants to save the world, determined to save him too. Xaden is safer behind the wards at Basgaith so he does everything he can to stay even if that ends up creating a new complication to his and Violets relationship.
Dark magic wielders seem to pop up everywhere throughout the book keeping you constantly at the edge of your seat waiting for the next attack or problem to arise.
Andarna desperately wants to know where sheâs from and what happened to her family and Violet will do everything she can to help her while also fighting to find the cure for Xaden. Traveling all over the continent and isles to find answers, Violet and her crew of riders and flyers are faced with some hard choices and disappointments with what seems like little reward and not the answer they were needing to hold on to hope. But we do learn more about Andarna which was a big question as the end of iron flame.
We also discover what Violets second signet is. We learn a lot more about the Venin, their power and what they are capable of doing. We do end with a cliffhanger, in true RY form but it has quite the twist to it!
The series isnât complete so no HEA is guaranteed but there arenât any love triangles or cheating and our hero and heroine are together for Onyx Storm.
5. MICHAEL ALONSO reviews for Onyx Storm
A great addition to an unforgettable series
This book was an emotional rollercoaster from start to finish. I laughed, I cried, I cheered, and I was on the edge of my seat for some of the most intense combat scenes the series has delivered so far. Itâs safe to say this one hit all the right notes.
Violet, our fearless FMC, continues to shine as a protagonist who grows stronger, smarter, and more capable with every book. This time around, she faces some harsh truths and learns lessons that push her to become the leader everyone needs her to be. Watching her âlevel upâ in both her skills and her sense of purpose was incredibly satisfying. On the other hand, Xaden, our MMC, also gets his moments to shine and stumble. Heâs a weapon in his own right, but his journey shows that even the strongest fighters have their limits. Their growth felt organic and well-earned, and it made me love them even more.
One of my favorite aspects of this book was how the secondary characters got more time to shine. They felt more fleshed out and integral to the story, which added even more depth to an already rich cast. Iâm hoping this trend continues in the next installments because the supporting characters bring so much heart to the series.
The pacing? Flawless. Yarros strikes a perfect balance between action, tension, romance, and those gut-punch emotional moments. Nothing ever feels rushed or dragged out, and every scene has purpose. Plus, the world-building and magic system are absolute standouts in Onyx Storm. We finally get deeper explanations about the lore and magic, and the added layers of culture and diversity across the regions were a fantastic touch. Itâs those small detailsâlike creative problem-solving that ties into the worldâs unique challengesâthat make this book (and the series as a whole) truly special.
I was thrilled to finally get answers to some of the big, lingering questions. Of course, Yarros being Yarros, sheâs also left us with a fresh batch of mysteries to obsess over while we wait for the next book. She absolutely knocked this one out of the park.
I already canât wait to reread Onyx Storm to catch all the details I missed the first time around. Itâs a great addition to an unforgettable series, and Iâm counting down the days until the next installment.
6. MOLLY reviews for Onyx Storm
Took a little while to pick up but I still loved it!
I loved Onyx Storm, and I can’t wait for the next book! Yarrow’s writing continues to be a highlight â she has this amazing knack for balancing humor and really touching moments. In fact, I even teared up a few times â the emotional punches really landed! I especially loved learning more about the dragons and their ideology, and seeing Violet and Xaden’s love story continue to develop. The book also does a great job depicting the corrupting influence of power. And, of course, I have to mention Broccoli â you’ll know what I mean when you read it!
Now, while I thoroughly enjoyed Onyx Storm, there were a couple of things I noticed. I did find myself wishing there was more representation of Violet’s chronic illness. As a hypermobility girlie myself, I so feel for her, and I think that aspect of her experience could have been explored further for the future. Also, I noticed that some pivotal moments and plans happen behind the scenes, so I wasn’t always clued in on Violet’s motivations or actions. It made certain parts a little tricky to follow initially, but I suspect it will all make perfect sense on a second read. Onyx Storm definitely felt like a bridge book, laying a lot of groundwork for the future. I spent the first chunk of the book getting my bearings with new characters and locations, and exploring more of the world’s history. Honestly, it took me a little while to really get into it, and the initial setup was a tad confusing. But once I found my footing? Things started to click, and the story really took off. The rest of the book was captivating.
But honestly, those small things didn’t detract from my overall enjoyment. This book definitely expands the lore and plot in exciting ways, and I can’t wait to see what happens next!
7. MELYNDA WANGSNESS reviews for Onyx Storm
âIâd say itâs a long story, but itâs really not.â
Onyx Storm is the book weâve been waiting forâthe bridge that finally ties Fourth Wing and Iron Flame together into a seamless narrative. Yarros doesnât just expand the world; she deepens it, building on every layer of intrigue and emotion that came before.
The world-building is as rich as ever, but this time, the map gets larger and the stakes grow higher. Weâre introduced to new lands and lore that weave seamlessly into the story, providing both clarity and tantalizing questions for the journey ahead. The political intrigue continues in full force, twisting and turning with the kind of masterful tension that makes you second-guess everything you thought you knew.
The characters we’ve come to love keep us entertained with their signature spunk, and the character development here is a standout. Relationships are tested, loyalties are questioned, and new dimensions are added to our favorite (and not-so-favorite) characters. And yes, those scenesâboth heartwarming and heart-wrenchingâleft me physically reacting once again.
The pacing strikes a perfect balance. Where Iron Flame felt uneven at times, Onyx Storm hits its stride, guiding readers through moments of calm before dropping us into breathtaking, high-stakes chaos. And that cliffhanger? Delicious. Iâm already counting down the days until we have the next Empyrean series book.
Onyx Storm is a reminder of why this series holds such a grip on me. Yarros has delivered a story that not only redeems the second bookâs shortcomings but also promises even more for the next books. If the first two books built the storm, this one lets it rageâand itâs impossible not to be swept away.
âIn a life without magic, the best medicine is time.”
8. YANA reviews for Onyx Storm
7 STARS âïž listen when I tell you this bc I am so fucking serious. THIS IS HANDS DOWN NOT ONLY THE BEST BOOK IN THE SERIES BY FAR, BUT THE BEST BOOK THAT I HAVE EVER READ. Rebecca DELIVERED with this one. The banter, the plot, the character development 100/10. I read this all day, in one sitting and under 24 hours and I literally might never read a book that can be on the same level as this.
9. EMMY ROSAM reviews for Onyx Storm
I canât even lie this was so much better than iron flame. Itâs been 24 hours and I havenât stopped thinking about this!!!!!!! This book single handedly made me fall back in love with the series. I honestly really enjoyed the pace and could have read 500+ more pages easily
10. KIMBERLY reviews for Onyx Storm
Iâm going to need a year to recover from whatever the fuck that was. đ Rebecca put her whole Yarrussy into this bookđ„Č
Onyx Storm wrecked me in the best way. RY really said, âOh, you thought you were emotionally stable? Thatâs cute.â The tension? Unmatched. The twists? Had me on the edge of my seat. The grip this entire series has on me? Absolutely suffocating.
Xaden and Violetâs relationship just gets deeper, messier, and somehow even more freaking addictive and heart wrenching. The emotional devastation? Letâs just say Iâll be unpacking that for a while. Xaden was unreal in this book, the jealousy!!!!!! SCREAMING. Dain âeyes on meâ Aetos?? RAW, NEXT QUESTION. BYE. đ©
I could break down every single word of this book and show my love for it, but youâll just have to understand that this was perfection, and I just donât have the time for that shit đ
I laughed, I cried, I threw my Kindle. My heart was pounding, my soul was screaming, and my brain is still trying to process everything that happened. I will 100% be rereading this with the graphic audio when it comes out. ITS GONNA HIT SO GOOD đ (this is your sign to stop acting like you donât like audiobooks, the graphic audios⊠Iâm TELLING YOU. Your soul NEEDS it.)
This book consumed me yâall. I was fighting for my life to finish it so I didnât have to see spoilers that would make me go Jack Barlowe on random ass people. anyways, if you need me, Iâll be curled up in the fetal position & rereading the best moments of this masterpiece. (the whole book bffr)
Letâs all brace ourselves for whatever comes next.đ«Ą
III. Onyx Storm Quotes

The best book quotes from Onyx Storm by Rebecca Yarros
âTo the ones who donât run with the popular crowd, the ones who get caught reading under their desks, the ones who feel like they never get invited, included, or represented. Get your leathers. We have dragons to ride.â
âXaden tilts his head, studying the king. âViolet.â My heart skips into double time. âMy loyalty is to Violet first above everything, everyone else,â
âDo. You. Still. Love. Me?â I enunciate every word and lean right into his space just to prove that Iâm not intimidated by him. He cups the back of my neck and pulls me within inches of his faceâclose enough to kiss. âI could reach the rank of Maven, lead armies of dark wielders against everyone we care for, and watch every vein in my body turn red as I channel all the power in the Continent, and I would still love you. What I did doesnât change that. Iâm not sure anything can.â
âAnd heâs not my boyfriend.â Rhi snorts and Ridoc offers me a sarcastic thumbs-up. âAgreed,â Xaden says. âThatâs far too casual a term for what we are.â
âIâm jealous of the armor that holds you when I canât, the sheets on your bed that caress your skin every night, and the blades that feel your hands.â
âEveryone assumes sheâll wind up with you, but itâs my last name she ends up wearing on her flight jacket in formation.â
âI have four uniforms, but only one fucking flight jacket, and Iââpunchââhateââpunchââsewing!â
âYour wings wonât hold the weight of this ice,ââ Andarna blatantly mocks him. âAnd yet yours miraculously carry the burden of your ego.â âGo find a sheep and let the adults work.â
âXaden is mine. My heart, my soul, my everything.â
âShe is warmth and light and air and love.â
âAnd consort?â I whisper. âWe arenât married.â He fucking smirks. âIâve noticed. But âgirlfriendâ is missing that permanent tone.â
âTell me something, Violence.â A muscle in his square jaw ticks as he stares down at me, rippling the tawny-brown skin of his stubbled cheek. âWhy is it always you?â
âI live by you. When have I ever given a fuck about the Codex or the Code of Conduct?â He cradles my face and leans down, resting his forehead against mine. âI am yours and you are mine, and thereâs no law or rule in this world or the next that will change that.â
âAll I want is to lose myself in you, and I canât. You are the only person in the world with the power to strip me of every ounce of my control, and the only person I canât fathom losing that control with.â He lifts his head. âAnd yet here I am, unable to keep three fucking feet away from you.â
âhelp her, my love, Iâm afraid our daughter has atrocious taste in men.â
âOh gods, just stop flirting and fuck already,â Ridoc says. Every head slowly turns in his direction. âI said that out loud, didnât I?â he asks me in a hushed whisper. âOh yeah, you did,â I reply, patting him on his back. âGarrickâs going to blow you off the mat.â âNow that I might enjoy, depending on the method he choosesââ Ridoc winces. âIâm going to stop talking now.â
âLetâs get three things straight, Your Highness. First, I have remarkable hearing thanks to the shadows at your very feet. Second, I donât control Violet. Never have. Never will. But third, and most importantlyââ He lowers his voice. âShe really, honestly hasnât thought about you. At least not since the second she set eyes on me.â Iâm going to fucking kill him.â
âYou get one chance to form your own squad, and you choose your ex, your current lover, the quadrantâs resident smart-ass, two people who have tried to kill you in the past yearâone over said current loverâand whatever Dain is? These are your choices for the most important mission any rider could possibly undertake?â âIâm glad someone said it,â Tairn chimes in.â
âAnd you’re going to teach us how to defeat you?” Aaric asks from behind us.
A corner of Xaden’s mouth slowly curves upward. “I can teach you to try, but there’s only one person capable of taking me down one day, and it isn’t you, Graycastle.ââIâm either completely in love with your boyfriend or utterly terrified of him,â Ridoc says under his breath.â
âYou two totally broke it, didnât you?â Ridoc asks on the edge of laughter. âLike that armoire no one was supposed to notice getting hauled out of her room during first year?â âThe what?â
