I. Book introduction
Iron Flame is a 2023 new adult fantasy novel by American author Rebecca Yarros. It is the second book in the Empyrean series, a planned five-book series.
Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College―Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky.
Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is–unless she betrays the man she loves.
Although Violet’s body might be weaker and frailer than everyone else’s, she still has her wits―and a will of iron. And leadership is forgetting the most important lesson Basgiath has taught her: Dragon riders make their own rules.
But a determination to survive won’t be enough this year.
Because Violet knows the real secret hidden for centuries at Basgiath War College―and nothing, not even dragon fire, may be enough to save them in the end.
The Empyrean series is best enjoyed in order.

Plot
Violet’s world shattered as she learned the shocking truth about Xaden and Brennan’s involvement in the secret rebellion. The revelation was like a lightning bolt, illuminating a reality that had been hidden in darkness. The attack by the venin had peeled back the veil, exposing a deadly threat that the kingdom had kept hidden. As she recovered from her injuries, Violet found herself torn between her loyalty to her country and her newfound knowledge of the rebellion’s cause. Meanwhile, her relationship with Dain, her trusted mage friend, was strained. Dain’s betrayal and subsequent vow of honesty left Violet skeptical and distrustful. She distanced herself from him, determined to protect her heart and mind from further pain. As their dragons underwent their separate rites of passage, Violet and Xaden were forced to live apart, but were granted weekend visits to foster the bond between their mythical companions.
Violet’s arduous second year at Basgiath War College, adversity looms. Excluded from a rebel mission, she endures harassment from the new vice commandant, Major Burton Varrish. Disguised as a comrade, Prince Cam joins her squad, while whispers of mysterious deaths among Athebyne survivors haunt her, forcing Violet to isolate herself to safeguard her allies. Secretly investigating the enigmatic First Six, she grapples with an elusive Xaden who maintains his secrecy. Their team’s struggles in the Rider Survival Course, exacerbated by a debilitating potion, fan Violet’s frustration. As hidden venin attacks escalate, Xaden confronts her about her covert research into wards and the disparity in their trust.
Keeping secrets from Mira and Rhiannon becomes increasingly difficult, leading Violet to reveal the perilous situation facing Athebyne survivors and Dain’s signet to Rhiannon. Aaric, unlike his father, rallies to confront the venin threat. In a twist of fate, Violet and her companions are captured, facing an interrogation challenge. Despite Varrish’s ploy with Dain’s signet, her resolve remains unbroken. The unexpected appearance of Jack Barlowe, her presumed victim, shocks Violet, only to be followed by the news of Xaden’s injury in a gryphon attack. Rushing to his aid, she discovers a fully healed Xaden who trusts her enough to involve her in a mission to deliver smuggled daggers to gryphon fliers, including his estranged ex-girlfriend Cat. As Violet accepts a dagger for self-defense, Varrish’s scrutiny catches her in possession of it. Rhiannon’s signet power teleports the dagger, inadvertently exposing Violet’s secret to the team.
A group of rebels daringly infiltrated the Archives, their mission to seize pivotal journals penned by the legendary First Six. Among them was Violet, a young woman grappling with her untamed lightning powers. However, fate had a cruel twist in store as Violet was apprehended and subjected to relentless torture by Varrish, the ruthless commander of Sorrengail’s forces. Yet, in her darkest hour, Violet found solace in ethereal visions of her departed friend, sustaining her indomitable will to survive. Fortune smiled upon Violet when Dain, a skilled rebel, intervened and facilitated her daring escape. Together, they rallied the students of Basgiath, exposing the vile truths behind Sorrengail’s tyranny. Their courageous actions inspired a mass exodus, with countless students abandoning their allegiance to join the rebels in their sanctuary at Aretia. This influx of defectors, coupled with the awakening of Andarna and the arrival of Mira, injected newfound vigor into the rebellion.
Violet’s destiny intertwined with Assembly member Felix, who guided her in harnessing her formidable powers. She meticulously translated an ancient ritual from a journal, but her initial attempt to activate the wards proved futile. Determined to illuminate the rebel base of Aretia, Violet embarked on a perilous journey to Cordyn, seeking the assistance of Viscount Tecarus. There, she crossed paths with Cat, her former rival and Xaden’s estranged betrothed. Through a daring negotiation that involved Violet vanquishing a fearsome creature with her lightning, Tecarus agreed to provide the rebels with a luminary. However, Tecarus’s aid came with a condition: the rebels were tasked with training 100 gryphon fliers in Aretia. During these rigorous exercises, tragedy struck when a Varrish dragon attacked, claiming the life of a rider. To their dismay, Andarna heroically sacrificed herself to vanquish the dragon. Despite their past rivalry, Cat and Violet found common ground, uniting against their shared adversary.
Violet shields her team with lightning while Sawyer is injured by a wyvern. Andarna rescues Violet from venin when she delivers Sawyer to healers. Jesinia provides a translation of Lyra’s journal, revealing the locations of seven dragon dens crucial for a ritual. Violet discovers Andarna, a dragon with unique camouflage abilities, is from the seventh den, gathering the seven dragons needed for a powerful ritual. Meanwhile, Xaden fights on the battlefield against the venin Sage, who has been plaguing his dreams. In a desperate attempt to save Violet, Xaden channels earth magic and turns venin himself. Violet realizes the ritual will drain her life force, but General Sorrengail sacrifices herself to complete it and save Violet’s life. Dragons activate a wardstone, causing the venin to retreat as wyverns die. Violet discovers Xaden has become infected with venin.

2. YUN reviews for Iron Flame
“Remember it’s only the body that’s fragile. You are unbreakable.”
Ahh, that was pretty awesome. I’m going to need a moment to process all this.
Many moments later…
Right, onto my thoughts.
Allow me a second to gush here. I love it when a book knows what it’s there to do, and that is to entertain the reader. It isn’t there to be slow or boring or god forbid, pretentious (shudders). Rather, its goal is to squeeze every ounce of joy and delight out of the pages, and that’s what this series does best.
Cracking open the first page, I was sucked right back into the world of Navarre and Violet Sorrengail. It’s as if I’ve never left it. Everything I loved from the first book is here—nonstop action, characters I could root for, snarky dragons, and sizzling romance. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough.
The only thing I didn’t love was our main couple having squabbles for half the book over reasons I couldn’t make heads or tails of. I get that Rebecca Yarros has to inject some sort of strife between them to keep things interesting, but I was just confused. But if it’s that or hundreds of pages of lovey-dovey mush, I guess I’ll take confounding couple problems any day.
I always have a sliver of trepidation going into book 2 of a series. What if my enjoyment of the first book was a fluke, a figment of my imagination? Or that the author somehow found the magical formula once, but can’t reproduce it again? Or worse, that there’s no interesting story left to tell? But I needn’t worry because Iron Flame contains all the magic of its predecessor.
I will say though, going in, the length at more than 600 pages was a bit daunting. But once I started, it didn’t even matter. I was riveted throughout. It felt like every single page served a purpose—except for the aforementioned confounding couple problems—building momentum and eventually hurtling towards a stunning conclusion. Honestly, if there were another 600 pages, I’d happily gobble those up too.
Before this book, I admit I was a bit puzzled that there could be five books in this series, like how much more is there to this story? But seeing the way Yarros has built out the universe and the war in this book, and especially that ending, I get now how there could be so much more to this. And I’m glad. I’m not sure I’m ready to say goodbye to Navarre any time soon, so I’m happy there are still a few more books to come. I just hope the wait isn’t too long.
3. BROOKE AVERICK reviews for Iron Flame
I…think I liked this more than fourth wing? I’m scared something’s wrong with me but I really don’t know why people have so many negative things to say about this book. It was action packed and Xaden was as gorgeous as ever. Even though it was spoiled for me I actually liked the ending and am excited for that plot line to pick right back up in the next book. I will say a qualm I have is that things are described in a way more complicated way than they need to be (ex. the runes/wards and also I cannot for the life of me orient myself in the battle scenes). And yes violet was annoying in the beginning but we all have our days… 4.5 stars
4. MMG reviews for Iron Flame
Calling Iron Flame by Rebecca Yarros a thrilling followup would be an understatement because I was bated from the very first page! This one carried on where fourth Wing left off and explored the Empyrean further, new characters and surprising turns kept me totally hooked.
Combining exhilarating action with heart-rending emotional depth, Yarros has woven each word of the story to make every moment feel real. The stakes are higher, the relationships even more intense and this series is heavy on character development. Duck and weave my way through an extremely engaging storyline — gasping, hooting and cheering to myself trying not making a scene!
There were a few moments that felt drawn-out to the point of wondering if necessary, but such detail given towards spicing up this world and storytelling rightfully wins in exchange. Buckle up for an emotional rollercoaster, but trust me you won’t regret getting on the ride. I cannot wait for the next book!
5. LISA V reviews for Iron Flame
‘Iron Flame‘ is ‘Game of Thrones’ meets ‘Hunger Games’ with splash of ‘Harry Potter’
This is the 2nd book in The Empyrean series by Rebecca Yarrow. I found the first book titled ‘Fourth Wing‘ in USA Today July 17, 2024, page 4D ‘Romantasies’ top recommendations. When I bought the first, thank goodness I also bought this second book as I would have gone CRAZY waiting to get my hands on ‘Iron Flame’. When I first got this, I read it straight through. Then I re-read it cover to cover, savoring it. I’ve re-read it three times now from cover to cover, and now I’m reading selections from it as I can make time in my life. Thank goodness these two books came while I was already on paid leave from work, as I would have been calling in sick to finish reading this series. I am not going to put spoilers in my review, as there are more than enough people giving way too much away, and yet they still don’t capture the quality of this book. I didn’t expect to like this second book more than the first, but I do. I think it is because the cliff hangers at the end of each chapter, as well as IN chapters, sometimes it feels like life and death cliff hangers on every page, just kept me in rapture. If you are reading this far in my review, then just buy this book. You’ll love it. You probably should also get her third book; as I write this review it isn’t yet released, but I’ve preordered ‘Onyx Storm’ and I can’t wait. Because of the graphic sex scenes, I will not be sharing this series with my teenager, but right now she couldn’t get these books away from me! I LOVE THIS SERIES!!
6. ALICIA reviews for Iron Flame
⚠️ a slight-spoiler-mental-dump review ⚠️
This is one of only two books this year that has made me physically ill. I was nauseous, anxious, tearing up throughout. Rebecca Yarros really brought the existential crisis out of me and I’m a glutton for punishment hehe
To many readers’ disappointment, Iron Flame is not for the romance girlies, despite RY turning the emotional intelligence and spice up to 100. This one is for the FANTASY GIRLIES. Suit up queens, we have wyvern and 600 years of misrecorded history to fight. SO EXPECT INFO DUMPS BABES
*bill hader stefon voice*: We got rebellion, military strategy, battles, interrogations, torture, death and gore galore, dragons with an attitude problem, SECRETS, jealous exes, ghosts, redemption arcs, dialogue and spice that changed my brain chemistry, and yet every time we take one step forward, we take two back. ARGHHH it hurts and i love it.
I extend a formal apology to Dain and General Sorrengail, whom I wished death upon in my Fourth Wing review. I now transfer this wish over to Colonel Aetos and especially Varrish xoxo
Xaden myhousemychairmywoman Riorson: you have me so unhinged i can barely breathe 🤪 the blueprint, the bar, the standard 🫠
Also, if you’re a Zodiac Academy girl, you know that ending is only the beginning. 😈
For real, this book was fantastic. The pacing, the way Violet is impacted by her most prized resource (her knowledge) being booted off the parapet, her and Xaden’s romantic roles reversal, the complexity of the military elements, the chosen family vibes within Iron Squad… to say I am thoroughly impressed with how this book follows up and complements Fourth Wing would be a massive understatement. Rebecca Yarros: you mf did THAT.
but im gonna need u to drop the season/year for book 3 girlypop
7. GABY reviews for Iron Flame
I’m speechless. My mind feels overwhelmed by what I just read, all the information coming from this book and I feel completely numb. I honestly I don’t even know how to form my thoughts, and I want to keep this spoiler free, but I am just mind blown and I don’t even know what I am feeling or what to say.
I definitely enjoyed this book and I would say it was much more heavily focused on the politics of this world, but I enjoyed learning everything. I didn’t expect how much information was dropped at once though. There definitely was some filler parts in my opinion that made it a tad bit dragged out. I also have to say that some of the worldbuilding and explanations had me confused and I had to re-read over several sections, trying to understand the terminology and what everything meant but it was fun to learn.
This book was a rollercoaster from start to finish. You can definitely expect tons of action, tons of emotions and you just have to prepare yourself for the unexpected. There’s definitely surprises and secrets that I in no way would’ve ever predicted so that was extremely fun to discover. I highly recommend it and I don’t know how I will physically wait for the next book without going insane.
8. EMMAREADS reviews for Iron Flame
After rereading Iron Flame, I understood why this series had already become a phenomenon. I devoured each page slowly (during both readings) for details and clues and dreaded the moment it ended. I love all the characters so much. My heart went out to Violet’s mother much to my surprise. I love Mira’s protectiveness towards her sister. I adore the Iron Squad (Rhi, Sawyer, Ridoc) and praying fervently that they will survive till the end. Even Dain & Cat sort of redeemed themselves. The final battle in this book was so tense and nerve-racking that I felt that I was transported there. Violet might just be one of the most badass and toughest female characters to exist. And after Varrish’s cruel interrogation, she had won me over completely. Don’t even get me started on Tairn & Andarna. If anything happens to them in the next book, I WILL be wrecked.
And of course, not forgetting XADEN RIORSON, our badass, sexy, unbelievably devoted, confident, fearless and powerful wingleader. How can I forget these scenes: Xaden who rescued Vi from that chamber and killed those who stood in his way, Xaden who worshipped the woman he loves on that throne, Xaden who bared his heart and secrets over and over again, Xaden who sacrificed himself to save Vi from the general, the man who would watch the world burn to save Vi instead.
9. JULEZREADS reviews for Iron Flame
10. MATT reviews for Iron Flame
OMGGGGG 4.5 stars
I loved almost every moment. I was so enthralled by this.
Only problem was I didn’t love the ending and also the author still doesn’t explain everything in black and white and that annoys me. Same reason book one lost a star. Sometimes I just need it WRITTEN OUT FOR ME – what is going on???? SAY IT!!! I never feel like I got it right.
Even the ending I’m still second guessing I’m even on the right track? Who knows. Who cares. It was fabulous even with its few faults.
Definitely give this series a go, it’s so easy to read!!
III. Iron Flame Quotes

The best book quotes from Iron Flame by Rebecca Yarros
“There’s nowhere in existence you could go that I wouldn’t find you, remember?”
“If Solas comes near you again, he knows I will devour his human whole and let him rot within me while his heart still beats, and then I’ll take the eye I so graciously left him.”
“Secrets make for poor leverage. They die with the people who keep them.”
“My house. My chair. My woman.”
“I do. I’m sorry if you expect me to do the noble thing. I warned you. I’m not sweet or soft or kind, and you fell anyway. This is what you get, Violet— me. The good, the bad, the unforgivable. All of it. I am yours.” His arm wraps around the small of my back, holding me steady and close. “You want to know something true? Something real? I love you. I’m in love with you. I have been since the night the snow fell in your hair and you kissed me for the first time. I’m grateful my life is tied to yours because it means I won’t have to face a day without you in it. My heart only beats as long as yours does, and when you die, I’ll meet Malek at your side. It’s a damned good thing that you love me, too, because you’re stuck with me in this life and every other that could possibly follow.”
“Because love, at its root, is hope. Hope for tomorrow. Hope for what could be. Hope that the someone you’ve entrusted your everything to will cradle and protect it. And hope? That shit is harder to kill than a dragon.”
“Violence, remember it’s only the body that’s fragile. You are unbreakable.”
“You must save yourself,” Tairn demands. “I chose you not as my next but as my last, and should you fall, then I will follow.”
“Stop bringing logic into an emotional argument.”
“The first year is when some of us lose our lives. The second year is when the rest of us lose our humanity.”
“You’re my gravity. Nothing in my world works without you.” “Gravity,” he whispers, a slow, beautiful smile curving his mouth. “The one force we can never escape,” I tease.”
“I love you,” I whisper. “You could throw my entire world into upheaval, and I would still love you. You could keep secrets, run a revolution, frustrate the shit out of me, probably ruin me, and I would still love you. I can’t make it stop. I don’t want to. You’re my gravity. Nothing in my world works without you.”
“My heart only beats as long as yours does, and when you die, I’ll meet Malek at your side.”
“How long do you think it takes for someone to fall out of love?” He studies the skyline. “A day? A month? I’m asking because I don’t have any experience with it.”
What the fuck? I fold my arms to keep from giving in to the impulse to jab him with the sharp point of my elbow.
“I’m asking,” he continues, his throat working as he swallows, “because I think it will take you all of a heartbeat once you know.”“I think I liked you better before you decided that feelings were something we need to discuss.”
“Sorry to inconvenience you, but this year the role of Violet Sorrengail”—he points to me—“ will be played by Xaden Riorson”—he taps his chest—“ who will drag her, kicking and screaming if he has to, into a real relationship with real discussions, because he refuses to lose her again. If I have to evolve, you do, too.”“Good idea. I could use a snack.” Andarna’s tone is indecently excited. “We do not eat our allies,” Tairn lectures. “You never let me have any fun.”
“You’re capable of hurting me in ways I’m not sure you’ve even begun to fathom, Violet. I might be skilled enough to land a death blow, but you alone have the power to fucking destroy me.”
“I could torch him if you would like,” Tairn offers. “But you do seem attached.”
“Love doesn’t even have the decency to die. It just transforms into abject misery.”
“I love you. The world does not exist for me beyond you.”
“Touch me and I swear to the gods, I’ll cut your fucking hands off and let the quadrant sort you out in the next round of challenges, Dain Aetos.”
“I chose you not as my next, but as my last, and should you fall, then I will follow.”
It’s a damned good thing that you love me, too, because you’re stuck with me in this life and every other that could possibly follow.” My lips part. It’s all I’ve ever wanted, ever needed to hear. “I do love you,” I admit in a whisper.”
“I bet we get seven inches tonight.” “Maybe more if you’re good.”
“But I’m begging you, Violet. Don’t offer me your body unless you’re offering me everything. I want you more than I want to fuck you. I want those three little words back.”
“I haven’t exactly made it easy for you to trust me,” he says, stroking his thumb over my cheek. “I’m still not making it easy. But you and I are not easy people. What we build together has to be strong enough to withstand a storm. Or a war. Easy isn’t going to give that to us.”
“I can handle pain.” I turn toward her. “I live in pain. I practically built a house there and set up a whole economy. I can take whatever they dish out.”
“With trembling hands, I unfold the paper—and smile. Xaden Riorson wrote me a letter.”
“I will happily watch Aretia burn to the fucking ground again if it means you live.”
“That trick you mentioned? You know, with the fingers?” A slow smile spreads across my face. “Thanks.”
