About the Author (Sarah J. Maas)

Sarah Janet Maas, known as Sarah J. Maas (born March 5, 1986) is an American fantasy author known for her fantasy series Throne of Glass, A Court of Thorns and Roses, and Crescent City. As of 2024, she has sold nearly 40 million copies of her books and her work has been translated into 38 languages.
Sarah Janet Maas began writing what would become her debut novel, Throne of Glass, at age sixteen. After writing several chapters of the novel, then titled Queen of Glass, Maas posted them on FictionPress.com, where it became one of the most popular stories on the site. It was later removed from the site when Maas decided to publish the novel. The story line of the series is based on the story of Cinderella, with the premise of “What if Cinderella was not a servant, but an assassin? And what if she didn’t attend the ball to meet the prince, but to kill him, instead?” In 2008, Maas started sending the story to agents before signing with Tamar Rydzinski of The Laura Dial Literary Agency in 2009. Throne of Glass was purchased in March 2010 by Bloomsbury, who later purchased two additional books in the series. The series is available in 15 countries and 35 languages. While four prequel novellas set two years before the first novel were also published, these were later condensed into one book, The Assassin’s Blade plus an original novella. The second book of the series, Crown of Midnight was a New York Times young adult best-seller. The final book in the series, Kingdom of Ash, was released on October 23, 2018; the finished series comprised seven books plus the novella collection.
A Court of Thorns and Roses, Maas’ second fantasy series, is a loose retelling of the traditional Beauty and the Beast. The first book of the trilogy was written in 2009, but was not published until 2015. Due to the success and popularity of the original series, it was extended and a spin-off series was announced which would feature stories of other popular characters. The fifth book in the series and the first of the spin-offs, A Court of Silver Flames, was published on February 16, 2021.
On May 16, 2018, Maas announced her first adult fantasy series, Crescent City. The first book, titled House of Earth and Blood, was released by Bloomsbury on March 3, 2020. It was ranked one of the top twenty Science Fiction & Fantasy books of 2020 on Kobo. The sequel, House of Sky and Breath, was released on February 15, 2022 and won the Best Fantasy award for Goodreads Choice Awards in 2022. The third installation of the series, House of Flame and Shadow, was released on January 30th 2024.
The A Court of Thorns and Roses series was announced to be adapted into a television series for Hulu in 2021. In an interview with The New York Times, Maas confirmed that she was developing the project with the writers and the showrunner as executive producer.
In May 2023, The Verge reported that the cover of the UK edition of House of Earth and Blood uses an AI-generated image.
The banning of many is her books in Utah public schools has led to a surge in their popularity.

“Don’t feel bad for one moment about doing what brings you joy.”
I’m speechless. What am I supposed to say after this? Am I supposed to write a coherent review with vital points as to why this book WAS FUCKING AMAZING??? I CAN’T EVEN TALK RIGHT NOW I’M SPEECHLESS. I WANT THE SECOND BOOK IN MY HANDS BUT MY ORDER STILL HASN’T COME. I’M READY TO GO TO FUCKING ENGLAND MYSELF AND PURCHASE IT. KIDS I’M LITERALLY DYING HERE.
The Beauty and the Beast-esque fantasy drama tells the story of Feyre, who finds herself entwined with faeries after unknowingly killing one. When the 19-year-old huntress kills a wolf in the woods, a beast-like creature arrives to demand retribution for it. Dragged to a treacherous magical land she only knows about from legends, Feyre discovers that her captor is not an animal, but Tamlin, one of the lethal, immortal faeries who once ruled their world. Feyre must find a way to stop it or doom Tamlin and his world forever.
I’m not a fantasy fan. I love fantasy in film and tv but not in books. I picked up this book cause I wanted to use it for my thesis for uni (don’t even ask) and now after I graduated I decided to give it a go. My favorite genres to read are historical fiction and contemporary, and fantasy falls on a very different category. But the fantasy in this book man… it gripped me tight and didn’t let me go.
First I started off this book a bit confused. The language confused me a bit, the terms, all the information. I’m reading books in English while my native language is Greek so fantasy fell a bit harsh on me. As I said, I’m not a fantasy fan, and with fantasy comes many weird words and shit like that. But I kept going and after a while I got used to everything and started to enjoy the plot and the characters. I enjoyed very much the factor that there weren’t many characters in this book. I don’t like when a book is crowded with characters, it doesn’t give me the space to love them all. This book succeeded in making all the characters lovable for me… even Rhysand. I fucking love Rhysand man. Unexpected feelings happening.
The world Sarah J. Maas created is so rich and dark and gloomy but also happy and hopeful and full of light, I truly enjoyed reading about it. I always get bored, to be honest, with descriptions and politics of different worlds but this one excited me. Even the fucking politics were exciting. I want to delve more into this world wHEN MY FUCKING BOOK ARRIVES.
Now to the juicy shit… the romance. Holy fucking shit. I ship these two so hard I can’t even breathe. When he sent her away I wanted to scream! He gave her a good fucking and left her hanging. Why am I laughing at this? But honestly, the romance was amazing. At first, I felt like the entire book was only gonna be about the romance and I didn’t quite enjoy that but after all the revelations and the twists in the plot, the romance was used wisely. And I didn’t expect that, because I have heard lots of things about this book. And now we have Rhysand… this dark, handsome motherfucker who has a gloomy past. This will become a triangle, I can feel it in my bones. But I’m here for it, for some reason. I love the heat Maas’s romances convey in me.
To sum it all up, this book took me a while to get into but it was all worth it. Maybe after this book I will start reading more fantasy. Maybe. Maybe not. As I’m waiting for the sequel to arrive, I will drawn my sorrow into crying about how amazing this first book was. Or maybe reread some parts. Maybe. Anyway, till the next one K BYE!!!
2. WENDY DARLING reviews for A Court of Thorns and Roses
4.5 stars Tamlin is going to set your loins aflame. Phew! My cheeks are still flushed.
I’m also fairly confident this book is going to help change the face of new adult fiction. How awesome to see gifted writers shaping non-contemporary stories that have the coming of age/youthful perspective and vibe of YA books and combine that with the freedom that writing for an older target audience affords them. If you liked the mood and romance of (the excellent) CRUEL BEAUTY but perhaps mourned the missed opportunities of such a seductive premise, ACOTAR more than satisfies. BITE MY NECK SOME MORE, SIR.
Plus stunning action and gorgeous imagery and interesting characters, including a fascinating anti-hero I’m looking forward to learning more about. Serious Darkling vibes, my friends.
Maybe more of a review closer to release. If I can calm my racing pulse before then.
3. JESSE reviews for A Court of Thorns and Roses
This was a solid start to this new series! I’m really interested to see where things go. I did find a few things to be a bit questionable, but I can’t say what they are because HELLO SPOILERS. I’ll be doing a full review/discussion on this sooooooon!
4. SASHA ALSBERG reviews for A Court of Thorns and Roses
wow. Just wow. Sarah has done it again! This book was amazing! The romance was borderline new adult which I loved but it was also greatly paced. The plot was so well thought out and executed as well. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND A COURT OF THORNS AND ROSES!
5. MMG reviews for A Court of Thorns and Roses
A Captivating Fantasy Romance That Hooks You from the Start
I was completely swept away by Sarah J. Maas’s “A Court of Thorns and Roses.” From the opening pages, I was immersed in the richly imagined world of the fae and the gripping story of Feyre, a brave and resourceful heroine.
Feyre’s journey from a tough huntress in the human realm to her unwilling entry into the dangerous faerie lands is thrilling and suspenseful. The author does an excellent job of slowly revealing the complex and layered world of the faeries, with its ancient feuds, shifting alliances, and hidden powers.
What really makes this book shine is the character development. Feyre is a complex and relatable protagonist – tough and pragmatic on the outside, but with a well of emotion and vulnerability underneath. Her growing relationship with the enigmatic faerie lord Tamlin is by turns hostile, wary, and ultimately sizzling with chemistry.
The world-building is simply stunning, with vivid descriptions that bring the faerie realm and its inhabitants to life. From the lush Spring Court to the sinister Weaver’s lair, every setting is richly imagined and integral to the story.
While the book starts a bit slow, it builds to an action-packed and emotionally charged climax that left me eager for the next installment. If you love fantasy romance with a strong heroine, a brooding hero, and a dash of danger, you’ll be utterly enchanted by “A Court of Thorns and Roses.” I can’t wait to see what happens next!
6. J.L.B reviews for A Court of Thorns and Roses
I know a lot of people have read this book already & rank it pretty low in the Maas verse, but… I liked it lol. It’s what got me back into the Romantasy world.
In the beginning there were a few unbearable characters such as the FMC lmfao, but after getting deeper into it you fall in love w/ a lot of them. Book 1 also not only tests our FMC, but yourself as well (Iykyk) lol! It has all great things a book should have. An amazing plot, great characters & world building. I love me a book w/ a map lol! And just when you think you know, you really don’t 🤯
If you’re a new reader I would totally suggest giving it a try!! It’s literally a win win situation ‘cause book 2 is CHEF’S KISS 🤌🏽 Even the rest of the incomplete series (Book 6 not out yet) is a really really good read.
7. LORRIE reviews for A Court of Thorns and Roses
It would take expert makeup artists & many graphic artists to produce this for the screen. Worth it!
They say a good story draws you in but a great story gives you no choice, this is one of those stories. Full warning, a good portion of this book is graphic, even hard to read, but once you’re invested you page on because you HAVE to know what happens.
I adored Feyre from the very beginning. Always taking care of her family, always the huntress, always the strong one in the family. And humble, not knowing the Beauty she is. I knew when she killed that wolf, something would happen but I had no idea what. No one, no one could ever imagine the trail of events that follow that beginning chapter.
Tamlin is the Beast in this story but as the chapters fall away, you learn more and more of his character. Personally I loved his emissary Lucien from the onset and quite frankly at times, the story needed a bit of humor. I found Rhys mysterious, the bad boy, another character you learn little at a time along the way.
At times I found it hard to read through the dark times beneath the mountain but I couldn’t stop. Getting through all of it makes the ending worth waiting for. The only cons I found with this book was the graphic violence and the many creatures introduced. I found it hard at first to keep them straight. I think Hollywood would be challenged to bring this story to the big screen, or a series, but I hope the author demands no creative liberties so it is told the way she wrote it. Great read, scary at times, gruesome at times, but worth the time to read it. Because love is worth it.
8. ZOE reviews for A Court of Thorns and Roses
This is definitely one of my favorite books of 2015!
I am a huge Beauty and the Beast fan and was in the mood for fantasy, so those combined and written by one of my favorite authors was perfection!
I definitely recommend this book to everyone and can’t wait for the next installment.
9. ALI GOODWIN reviews for A Court of Thorns and Roses
Asdfghjkl I LOVED this book. It took me a little bit to get into just cause there’s a good amount of world building that has to happen at the beginning but then I FLEW through the second half. I loved the world, the politics, the romance, and all the characters. The ending had me on the edge of my seat. And I’ve now immediately gone out and purchased the second book
10. JESSICA reviews for A Court of Thorns and Roses
omg you guys. look at my original review! i totally thought tamlin was bae. im dying. oh, to be young and innocent. 2018 was such a simpler time.
but i still loathe nesta with every fibre of my being, so i guess some things never change. lol.
______________________________
this was serving me some major ‘beauty and the beast’ meets ‘twilight’ realness. and i had no idea that was something i needed in my life until now. i completely understand the hype around this book. all of the world building, the writing, the pacing, and of course, ALL the tamlin. brilliance! it is safe to say that i am now a proud owner of a first class ticket on the SJM bandwagon. the woman is a queen.

III. A Court of Thorns and Roses Quotes by Sarah J. Maas

The best book quotes from A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas
“Rhysand stared at me for long enough that I faced him.
“Be glad of your human heart, Feyre. Pity those who don’t feel anything at all.”“I was as unburdened as a piece of dandelion fluff, and he was the wind that stirred me about the world.”
“Don’t feel bad for one moment about doing what brings you joy.”
“Pity those who don’t feel anything at all.”
“I love you,’ he whispered, and kissed my brow. ‘Thorns and all.”
“We need hope, or else we cannot endure.”
“I threw myself into that fire, threw myself into it, into him, and let myself burn.”
“There are those who seek me a lifetime but never we meet,
And those I kiss but who trample me beneath ungrateful feet.
At times I seem to favor the clever and the fair,
But I bless all those who are brave enough to dare.
By large, my ministrations are soft-handed and sweet,
But scorned, I become a difficult beast to defeat.
For though each of my strikes lands a powerful blow,
When I kill, I do it slow… ”“I love you,” I said, and stabbed him.”
“You look . . . better than before.”
Was that a compliment? I could have sworn Lucien gave Tamlin an encouraging nod.
“And you hair is . . . clean.”“Well, good-bye for now,” he said, rolling his neck as if we hadn’t been talking about anything important at all. He bowed at the waist, those wings vanishing entirely, and had begun to fade into the nearest shadow when he went rigid.
His eyes locked on mine wide and wild, and his nostrils flared. Shock—pure shock flashed across his features at whatever he saw on my face, and he stumbled back a step. Actually stumbled.
“What is—” I began.
He disappeared—simply disappeared, not a shadow in sight—into the crisp air.”“When you healed my arm…You didn’t need to bargain with me. You could have demanded every single week of the year.” My brows knit together as he turned, already half-consumed by the dark. “Every single week, and I would have said yes.” It wasn’t entirely a question, but I needed the answer.
A half smile appeared on his sensuous lips. “I know,” he said, and vanished.”“Do you ever stop being so serious and dull?”
“Do you ever stop being such a prick?” I snapped back.
Dead—really, truly, I should have been dead for that.
But Lucien grinned at me. “Much better.”“I stared at the nose I’d seen bleeding only hours before, the violet eyes that had been so filled with pain. “Why?” I asked.
He knew what I meant, and shrugged. “Because when the legends get written, I didn’t want to be remembered for standing on the sidelines. I want my future offspring to know that I was there, and that I fought against her at the end, even if I couldn’t do anything useful.”
I blinked, this time not at the brightness of the sun.
“Because,” he went on, his eyes locked with mine, “I didn’t want you to fight alone. Or die alone.”
And for a moment, I remembered that faerie who had died in our foyer, and how I’d told Tamlin the same thing. “Thank you,” I said, my throat tight.
Rhys flashed a grin that didn’t quite reach his eyes. ” I doubt you’ll be saying that when I take you to the Night Court.”“He brought his lips to my ear. “I would have been gentle with you, though.” I shuddered as I closed my eyes. Every inch of my body went taut as his words echoed through me. “I would have had you moaning my name throughout it all. And I would have taken a very, very long time, Feyre.”
“Everything I love has always had a tendency to be taken from me. I tell very few about the wings. Or the flying.”
“Because all the monsters have been let out of their cages tonight, no matter what court they belong to. So I may roam wherever I wish until the dawn.”
“I stepped out of the shelter of my savior’s arm and turned to thank him. Standing before me was the most beautiful man I’d ever seen.”
“I found him carefully studying me, his lips in a thin line. “Has anyone ever taken care of you?” he asked quietly.
“No.” I’d long since stopped feeling sorry for myself about it.”“Feyre!” someone roared. No, not someone – Rhysand.”
“Because I wouldn’t want to die alone,” I said, and my voice wobbled as I looked at Tamlin again, forcing myself to meet his stare. “Because I’d want someone to hold my hand until the end, and awhile after that.
That’s something everyone deserves, human or faerie.”“It took me a long while to realize that Rhysand, whether he knew it or not, had effectively kept me from shattering completely.”
“You didn’t tell me this would happen.”
“You didn’t ask. So how am I to blame?”“Because your human joy fascinates me—the way you experience things, in your life span, so wildly and deeply and all at once, is … entrancing. I’m drawn to it, even when I know I shouldn’t be, even when I try not to be.”
“Rhysand yelled my name again – yelled it as though he cared. I blacked out, but she brought me back, ensuring that I felt everything ensuring that I screamed every time a bone broke.”
“Regardless of his motives or his methods, Rhysand was keeping me alive. And had done so even before I set foot Under the Mountain.”
“If I offer you the moon on a string, will you give me a kiss, too?” – Lucien Vanserra”
“I was loosened, a top whirling around and around, and I didn’t know who I danced with or what they looked like, only that I had become the music and the fire and the night, and there was nothing that could slow me down.”
“My priority would be to protect my family — and I would have picked whatever side could keep them safest. I hadn’t thought of it as a weakness until now.”
“I heard you scream,” he said as he examined the blade in my hands. I’d never held one so finely crafted, so perfectly balanced. “And I hesitated. Not long, but I hesitated before I came running. Even though Tam got there in time, I still broke my word in those seconds I waited.” He jerked his chin at the knife. “It’s yours. Don’t bury it in my back, please.”
