Who am I?
I’ve forgotten the answer to that question long ago. Ever since I ran from that house, so desperate to escape, I left with only the clothes on my back and socks on my feet. After that day, I’ve only ever walked in stolen shoes.
Could I be a girl who is searching for the meaning of life in faceless men? They were all so forgettable. Until he came along. He took me under a waterfall and made me forget my name, and in return, I took his instead.
Enzo Vitale.
An enigmatic man that will only ever love the deep sea. Or rather the predators that inhabit it. Turns out, he’s not so different than the monsters he feeds. He lured me onto his boat like a fish in the ocean, seeking vengeance for my crime. Had I realized his intentions, and that a massive storm would leave us shipwrecked, I would’ve run.
Now, I’m a girl who’s seeking refuge in a decrepit lighthouse with a man who loathes me almost as much as he craves me. He wants to hurt me, but the old caretaker of the abandoned island may have intentions far more sinister.
It’s no longer a question of who I am, but rather, will I survive?

1. SK reviews for Does It Hurt?
“When I met you, you lifted me out of that darkness, and it was the first time I came up for air. You’ve become my oxygen, bella ladra, and I can no longer breathe without you.”
Plot- 4/5✨
Spice- 4.5/5🌶️
Oh wow. I devoured it. It’s my first book by this author and I’m impressed. The writing comes natural, it’s immersive. The balance of romance and suspense is good. The characters are well thought out. And oh wow the spice is so so amazing.
✔️Dual POV
✔️Dark Romance
✔️Horror- suspense vibes
✔️Action sequences
✔️Juicy smut
The story starts with our FMC – Sawyer, who’s on the run and escapes to Australia, where she meets our MMC – Enzo, a sexy Italian who’ll make you swoon so hard you’ll never have a chance to catch your breath. Anyway, Sawyer steals his identity and the man sees red since. Will he find Sawyer and take revenge? Will he find Sawyer and hate her? Will he find Sawyer and love her? Or will they both find themselves in a totally messed up situation in a creepy lighthouse?
This book is so worth reading if you want something erotic, dark and full of suspense. I loved the last 150 pages. It kept me reading at a pace faster than the speed of light. I just had to know and find out! Also, did I mention juicy smut?
The characters are complex, backstories that can be triggering so do proceed with caution.
I did however at times find Sawyer to be a bit pretentious, her personality kept switching in the first 250 pages, which kinda annoyed me.
But it’s nothing that will put one off.
I highly recommend!
⚠️ Trigger warnings- mentions of rape, incest, suicide, pedophilia; PTSD, depression, anxiety, violence, graphic murder, degradation ⚠️
Special note to authors- Please don’t try to justify your characters shortcomings cause of religion, especially the Bible. There’s no need to slander it. Everyone has sufferings, but what you do after that learning period, is what makes you as a person.
2. KATE reviews for Does It Hurt?
“There’s a place in the ocean, so deep, where not a single point of light penetrates through it. And for so long, I’ve been trapped there, unable to breathe. When I met you, you lifted me out of that darkness, and it was the first time I came up for air. You’ve become my oxygen, bella ladra, and I can no loner breathe without you.”
Also for the Zade Meadows fans, here is Enzo literally bringing Sawyer to his home after meeting her: “Why are you so nervous to enter our home?” 😏 giving zaddy vibes IYKYK.
4.5 stars. This book…..what did I just read? This book is haunting and very disturbing and insane. I loved it. Seriously LOVED THIS. It is hauntingly good. An alternative title: “How i captured Enzo Vitale, the human version of a great white shark.” I had no idea what this was about going into it other than this was written by the same author of the Haunting Adeline duet (I am a zaddy fan but can acknowledge that there are many disturbing aspects of those books) and it just kept getting crazier the deeper I went.
So if you’ve read Haunting Adeline, you’ll see a lot of similarities between zaddy and Enzo Vitale, the mmc in this book. Enzo is hot, huge, arrogant, super controlling and uber possessive and likes to *make it hurt.* He’s also a marine biologist from Italy who studies great white sharks off the Australian coast for a living. He randomly meets Sawyer, aka his bella ladra, aka “little thief,” in a bar in Australia and is instantly into her. But our Sawyer girlie has a haunting and tragic backstory, leading to her stealing from him. When he finds out, he tricks her onto a boat and takes her to see sharks so he can scare her into a confession. But a storm comes, they become shipwrecked, and end up stranded on an island with a lighthouse and a creepy caretaker who forces them to stay in one room with one bed (!!!) with really creepy rules they have to follow until the next supply ship comes to the island in a month. So Enzo and Sawyer have to rough and tough it out together on this island run by this old man who you have no idea what his motives are until the end.
So while surviving on the island, Enzo and Sawyer’s relationship explodes. Enter tons tons tons of SPICE. Not as triggering as the Haunting Adeline spice, but still too much for just the average romance reader. This is a DARK ROMANCE PEOPLE. Do not expect sweet interactions. Enzo and Sawyer are battling their own inner demons through one another, and they are exactly what the other needs. Now besides the amazing romance between them, the lighthouse is HAUNTED, the caretaker is trying to get Sawyer to STAY THERE FOREVER with him, and a ton of other WTF moments happen. Seriously, my jaw was dropped the last 1/3 of this book. It is DISTURBING. It is INTENSE. It is NOT FOR THE FEINT OF HEART. But it is SO SO SO GOOD. ❤️🔥🦈🌊🤍⛴️⚓️⛓️🩶
Does it hurt? YES. THIS BOOK HURT SO GOOD. The overarching theme is that Enzo is like the shark, the predator, and Sawyer is initially his prey. But with Enzo’s help, she realizes her own inner predator and fights to live the life she’s deprived herself of for most of her life due to her horrible backstory. Its symbolic, eerie, will give you nightmares, will make you feel intense emotions, and is honestly very well written.
3. JESS reviews for Does It Hurt?
Ohhh man this was good!! Looks like we’re all fighting for Enzo but I claim him 🧎🏻♀️
FMC Sawyer, is on the run when she catches a flight to Australia. There in Australia, she meets tall, dark and handsome, Enzo. (He’s also Italian 😏) After a fun night, Sawyer steals his identity.
It’s not all what it seems to Enzo but none the less he finds out what Sawyer did and finds her. Hell bent on making her learn her lesson, he takes Sawyers on his boat and a 100 miles off the shore of Australia. Without any warning of fast approaching storm, they’re shipwrecked. Against all odds, they’re forced to seek asylum on a small island with what seems to be an abandoned lighthouse. But, it’s not and the lighthouse keeper poses more bad than good.
Y’all, this was such a good read. I loved Sawyers character. She had to do bad things to survive while running but for good reason. I loved her personality and her wittiness. There were times I couldn’t stop laughing or smiling at the things she said.
The best part? THE SMUTTTT 🙌🏻 so. freaking. good.
Enzo knows what he’s doing, let me tell you!
Also, yes this a horror suspense novel + romance. The author in my opinion did a great job keeping us on our toes. I didn’t want to put it down. I was never bored!
4. LCULLEN reviews for Does It Hurt?
Love the cover artwork!!! definitely not for the faint of heart though lots of TWs
Quick read! Had me captivated for most of it!! Read it in one sitting!!!! Love the dialogue the blend of sassy/vulnerable/angst/ witty & steamy was remarkable!!!!! Definitely check the trigger warnings if you’re interested!!! The warnings are meant for a reason as this novel covers some pretty dark & heavy topics, but that said it conveys such emotions that we need to discuss not hide away from! It is sad that these things happen, but how the characters evolve good or bad from this experience is critical to the story!! Main thing is a HEA which is what I live for in novels!!!! No grammatical errors which is always a plus! The story flowed nicely!!!! Definitely can sense the connection loved that! Omg what she had to go through & what other characters did as well!! Props to the author for creating such realistic (at times too realistic🤯😬🫣😢🥴🥹) & engaging characters & plot!! The chemistry between our main characters was AWESOME!!!! Possessive male alpha & his love eeekkkssss!!!
5. JESSICA reviews for Does It Hurt?
A Dark, Twisted Tale of Love and Obsession
“Does It Hurt” by H.D. Carlton is a raw, intense exploration of the darker side of human relationships, one that delves deep into themes of obsession, trauma, and the blurred lines between love and pain. This novel offers an unapologetically gritty look at the complexities of a toxic relationship that pulls readers into an emotional whirlwind, leaving them questioning where the boundaries between love and control truly lie.
The story centers around Sawyer, a woman trapped in a cycle of unhealthy attachment, and Enzo, a mysterious and volatile figure with a penchant for manipulation. Their connection is undeniably magnetic, yet toxic and dangerous, and Carlton expertly plays with the reader’s emotions, creating a tension that builds page by page. The novel explores the devastating effects of trauma, while also exploring how two broken individuals can become entangled in a dance of power and vulnerability.
What makes “Does It Hurt” stand out is Carlton’s ability to craft complex, morally grey characters that are both repellent and sympathetic. Readers will find themselves conflicted as they become invested in the relationship, wondering if love can truly survive in such a storm of dysfunction. The book is unflinching in its portrayal of psychological manipulation, but also offers moments of unexpected tenderness, making it a compelling read for those who enjoy dark romance with depth.
However, this book is not for everyone. Its themes are unsettling, and the dynamics of control and abuse may be triggering for some readers. The intensity and emotional volatility may leave readers feeling disturbed, but also captivated by the raw honesty of the characters’ struggles.
In conclusion, “Does It Hurt” by H.D. Carlton is a gripping, haunting story that will keep readers on the edge of their seats. It’s an emotional rollercoaster that examines love, obsession, and the scars that we carry, for better or for worse. If you’re a fan of dark romance that doesn’t shy away from the uncomfortable, this novel is worth diving into—but be prepared for an unforgettable, often uncomfortable ride.

7. STEPHANIE JENSEN reviews for Does It Hurt?
Mystery and dark romance, loved
This book was an electrifying and captivating read, seamlessly blending intense romance with an engaging plot—something that’s quite rare to find. I was completely drawn in, and Enzo’s character was utterly magnetic; I fell for him hard.
Initially, I was a bit unsettled by the heroine’s actions, as her decision-making seemed uncharacteristically reckless compared to the self-preservation she had demonstrated before meeting Enzo. It felt as though she was abandoning her usual sense of logic, which took me out of the story momentarily.
That said, the mystery and suspense surrounding the side plot, particularly once they arrived at the lighthouse, were thrilling and added depth to the narrative. The progression of Enzo and Sawyer’s relationship was also fascinating. While their initial attraction and physical connection happened quickly—something I usually dislike—it worked in this context, as it was intended to feel impulsive and fleeting. Over time, their bond developed through tension and connection, especially as they navigated life on the island.
Even some of the more unconventional scenes involving Enzo, while unexpected, added to the book’s intrigue. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this thrilling and provocative story.
8. SHAY reviews for Does It Hurt?
A new reason to love sharks!!
I devoured this book. I, too, love sharks and everything the ocean has to offer, but this definitely allows me to add a few ideas to my cage diving bucket list. This was an incredible read with a fearless female main character. I love that she maintained her independence with all that she endured.
9. STEFF reviews for Does It Hurt?
5 stars ☆ “If worshiping you is what you ask, I’d be happy to spend the rest of my life on my knees.”

like words cannot explain how much I wanted to take this man’s d1ck from the back and slurp it like it’s my last thanksgiving meal like omg I want him to turn into his titan form and put me in his mouth and let me slideeee on down his throat like omg.
(if you know that audio then we’re good 😭)
10. RAE reviews for Does It Hurt?
One of my favorite reads of 2022
I don’t even know where to start. This book was amazing. I loved every single character, even the antagonists, because they were just done so flipping well.
The plot was well-thought out and I definitely felt the suspense building until it finally peaked. The writing was beautiful, I think this is my most highlighted book of the year, too. So many memorable lines.
Sawyer was such a strong person even if she didn’t always see herself that way. She was funny as heck and made me lol- for real. I think, also, experiencing fear and reacting certain ways is so subjective. Even if someone could’ve predicted what was to happen, someone else might not have. Fear can cause you to miss out on red flags, warning signs. I don’t think how the story played out is improbable, or glaringly predictable, especially because we the readers see and know things the main characters don’t.
Enzo was the perfect definition of an antihero. He was flawed, had a quick fuse, and cruel, but not unredeemable. I felt he was pretty justified with most of his actions (there was that one iffy scene in the boat though 😳). We saw his love develop for Sawyer over time and circumstance- when faced with death, I think we would all reflect about ourselves.
The amount of chemistry between the two of them could light a fire on wet wood. There was A LOT of sex which I loved. (But if you don’t care for profanity, dirty talk, and numerous sexual situations, maybe this isn’t for you). I felt their connection go from lust to hate to tolerate to like to love. It felt natural, organic.
This truly was a trip, one I’m so glad I took. It’s gonna be a reread, that’s a fact.

“See, the bean gods did bless us. With coffee beans.”
“And I will accept nothing less. The only type of daddy I’m interested in is the sugary ones.”
“He pulls away enough to catch my watery gaze. “Choose to live, bella. Choose me.”
“There are many things you deserve, bella ladra, but the only prison you will be a captive in is one of my own making. If my love is a prison, so be it.”
“I’m pretty sure women can live just fine without them, yet here they are, still plaguing Earth like cockroaches. A definite hiccup in evolution.”
“It hurts like hell, but pain will always come before beauty. How else would we appreciate it?”
