I. Book introduction
It Starts with Us is a romance novel by Colleen Hoover, published by Atria Books on October 18, 2022. It is the sequel to her 2016 best-selling novel It Ends with Us. The sequel was first announced in February 2022. It became Simon & Schuster’s most pre-ordered book of all time. Hoover wrote the novel as a “thank you” to fans of the first novel.
Before It Ends with Us, it started with Atlas. Colleen Hoover tells fan favorite Atlas’s side of the story and shares what comes next in this long-anticipated sequel to the “glorious and touching” (USA TODAY) #1 New York Times bestseller It Ends with Us.
Lily and her ex-husband, Ryle, have just settled into a civil coparenting rhythm when she suddenly bumps into her first love, Atlas, again. After nearly two years separated, she is elated that for once, time is on their side, and she immediately says yes when Atlas asks her on a date.
But her excitement is quickly hampered by the knowledge that, though they are no longer married, Ryle is still very much a part of her life—and Atlas Corrigan is the one man he will hate being in his ex-wife and daughter’s life.
Switching between the perspectives of Lily and Atlas, It Starts with Us picks up right where the epilogue for the “gripping, pulse-pounding” (Sarah Pekkanen, author of Perfect Neighbors) bestselling phenomenon It Ends with Us left off. Revealing more about Atlas’s past and following Lily as she embraces a second chance at true love while navigating a jealous ex-husband, it proves that “no one delivers an emotional read like Colleen Hoover” (Anna Todd, New York Times bestselling author).
Premise
The novel continues from where It Ends with Us ended and centers on the relationship between Lily and Atlas. The novel alternates chapters between the first-person narration of Lily and Atlas.
Plot
The love story continues with Atlas Corrigan and Lily Bloom through It Starts with Us nearly a year after their last encounter. Lily’s daughter Emerson, who she had with the father and neurosurgeon, Ryle Kincaid, is 11 months old now. Lily and Atlas run into each other unexpectedly on the streets of Boston but the encounter is short due to both of them running late to different events. After dropping Emmy off at Ryle’s apartment, Lily returns to work unable to stop thinking about her run-in with Atlas. However, she is hesitant to text Atlas anticipating the negative reaction of her abusive ex-husband and father of her child.
Atlas talks to his coworker/friend’s son, Theo, about what happened with Lily. Theo encourages him to text her, but when Lily responds rather shortly, Atlas gets disappointed. When Lily returns to her apartment that evening she finds her ex-husband and daughter inside. He reveals he wants to start having overnights with Emmy. She says Emmy will not be allowed to stay at Ryle’s apartment overnight until she is able to speak. She also asks for her apartment key back that Ryle had, which he begrudgingly gives up.
Atlas’s restaurants are being vandalized but he chooses not to report it to the police because he discovers some food missing. He relates to the vandal because he too was once a hungry homeless kid. When inspecting some of the vandalism he receives a call from his perverse mother who he hangs up on and immediately blocks.
Atlas brings lunch for Lily to her flower shop. While he’s there, Ryle comes unannounced. Lily gets nervous about his reaction to seeing Atlas there, so she hides Atlas in a closet. After Ryle leaves, Atlas and Lily agree to talk on the phone later. While on the phone later, Atlas asks Lily on a date and she agrees. While on the drive to the restaurant for their date, Lily falls asleep. Instead of waking her up, Atlas occupies himself by reading some of the journal entries that Lily wrote about Atlas when they were kids. When Lily awakens she finds out they missed their reservation and feels bad.
Lily leaves her daughter with her best friend which is also Ryle’s sister, Allysa for her date. When Lily returns from the date Ryle is there with Emerson watching Finding Nemo. Ryle is angry because he is under the impression that Emerson’s middle name, Dory, is dedicated to Atlas because of the significance the movie was to Lily and Atlas when they were children.
Atlas’s mother, Sutton, shows up at one of his restaurants revealing to him that he has a brother named Josh and she can’t find him. Later that night he waits at one of his restaurants, ready to confront the vandal if he/she returns. The vandal does return and Atlas discovers it is his 11-year-old brother. Atlas takes him in but calls Sutton the next day. Atlas returns Josh to his mother but before he leaves, he sees Sutton abuse Josh. Atlas immediately takes Josh back to his house.

1. IAQUINTA review: It Starts with Us – A Novel (2)
‘It Starts With Us‘ is the sequel book for Colleen Hoover’s best-selling novel “It Ends With Us’. This book begins immediately after It ends with us when lily was dragged through a divorce and domestic abuse from her partner Riley. “It Ends With Us” is a must-read before moving on to “It Starts With Us’. ‘It Starts With Us’ is a more uplifting read than it ends with us. Lily Bloom and Atlas Corrigan have a second chance at their childhood love but not without many struggles and situations they have to tread carefully. To me, this novel, unlike many I have read, didn’t feel like it was drugged and unnecessary. The plot lines transitioned very seamlessly throughout the two books not leaving unanswered questions between one and the other. Though it is the sequel, it ends with us. It has its very own unique plot and doesn’t feel repetitive. Taking you through many new character paths and revealing more about each character. The portrayal by Colleen Hoover of a divorced family dynamic and co-parenting situations is very accurate in the sense I have gone through this with my own family. Lily is trying to pursue this relationship with Atlas but still trying to respect her ex-husband Ryle. In time as the book progresses Lily Bloom realizes she deserves the love that Atlas gives her. Once she realizes she deserves this love Atlas and Lily work to rekindle the love they felt for each other as kids. There are different repercussions to this love forming again. The love that is portrayed through the two characters is genuine and child-like in a way making it easy to fall in love with it. Though this book travels through a lot of people’s instances of love there are always instances of hatred. Throughout the book, there are instances where it is hard to tell who is right and who is wrong, or what is right and what is wrong. She never makes the antagonist truly the antagonist; she makes them ready to feel empathy towards them because it may not be their fault it’s happening. They may just be stuck in a cycle. “It starts with us giving us more of the background of Atlas Corrigan’s life than we got in. It ends with us where it was mainly only Lily’s point of view.
‘It Ends With Us’ takes you through the emotional roller coaster of domestic abuse happening and there being someone in that situation that has the resources to break out. “It Starts With Us’ is a story of rekindling love and hope for recovery from her earlier abuse. This book is proving that not every love is unconditional. They can be toxic and unhealthy, but there are those once-in-a-lifetime loves like Atlas and Lilys. Relationships are flawed and nothing comes easy. “It Starts With Us” is a beautiful and comforting read. The novel gently sorts through the aftermath of complications in “It Ends With Us”. This sequel demonstrates the sense that there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. There is a chance to have happiness even in fearful situations.“It starts with us” successfully brings forth lilies and atlases story at their second chance at true love. (This is for an English class )
2. SANDY BRRIOS review: It Starts with Us – A Novel (2)
Wow. I honestly cannot even begin to describe the journey this book took me on. It took me quite a while to finish due to personal issues but I’m so happy I finished it because it was so incredibly amazing. Lily and Atlas are perfection and I can’t imagen them being anywhere but together. I absolutely adored their story and journey to happiness and it makes me feel happy to know that they got their happy ending. That one they both greatly deserved. I hated Ryle but I’m glad he made an effort towards the end of the book. Allysa and Marshall are so amazing. I love them so much! And Raylee and Emerson 🥰 so adorable! Now as to my favorite character ever, Theo has my heart because god did that kid make me laugh even when I was crying. And Josh, your deadpan attitude and sarcasm were phenomenal! I LOVED THIS BOOK!
3. MARIAN CHAWNER review: It Starts with Us – A Novel (2)
I found this story deeply moving and although we had a bit of a wait for the final end , it was so worth it. This author certainly knows how to write a deeply emotionally charged story , that is not only tender and loving, but also some of the content is dark and fearsome. Domestic violence, child abuse and neglect are not easy topics to incorporate in a romance novel, but Colleen has managed it with understanding and compassion. Lily may have been a victim, but motherhood has made her a lot stronger, and less able to be manoeuvred into a dreadful situation. Atlas although a victim of neglect and abuse as a child , has grown into a caring , kind , considerate, loving man. The story is so well written, and side characters such as Josh and Theo, are also worried teenage souls who defy life and become admirable people. As ever well worth 5 stars. Some people may find the content disturbing, some may not realise how common it can be behind closed doors. It’s not a disease as such but a severe problem for all, that knows no social boundaries. It happens in all walks of life, poor and rich, educated and uneducated, and this novel highlights this. The sort of book that leaves you thinking.
4. TISH review: It Starts with Us – A Novel (2)
5 stars
Let me start by saying this: there’s going to be a lot of hate for this book for the sole reason people just want to dislike this author for their popularity and there’s this hate train going on for the littlest things this author does so I already know people are going to just come out of the woodworks and find the tiniest thing to hate on this. That is not to say that this book is perfect or that your review will be disingenuous. Books are subjective– therefore there can be books that I love you hate, and books I hate that you love. I just don’t understand or stand for the unwarranted amount of hate that goes into BASHING books just for the way they are written. I have been reading Colleen Hoover since 2012- Slammed was my first book by her. I have had many misses with her along with many hits.
With that being said; I read It Ends With Us in 2016. I truly loved how it ended, I thought it was the end. I did not ever expect it starts with us and yet I could not think of what a beautiful and necessary addition this is.
It Starts with Us shows the after effects of abuse in every form. It shows how realistic, how tragic and how even a happily ever after is still shadowed by the ache and reminder of abuse.
I know people are going to be mad at how often Ryle shows up here but that’s the reality of how abusive situations are, they don’t just die or leave you alone— colleen did a fantastic job at showing how realistic this situation is, at how much of a gaslighter he is.
For the Ryle apologist and stans: I’m so glad Colleen wrote this book because there’s NO room for y’all’s bullshit. He is an abuser. This isn’t a dark romance. This is a contemporary romance where an abuser stays abusive, continues to be abusive in the tiniest ways and the cycles are broken. He truly and will forever be a terrible person and I’m so glad that this book continuously highlighted that. Abusers don’t “change” and even if they do, the cycle should be broken forever.
We get to see Lily and Atlas as an unit and we get to see them really fall in love with their love. I so deeply appreciated that aspect. We really do get to see them find their way back to each other and then fight for their love. This is THEIR story now.
I also want to add, I loved the side characters. Every single one of them. Theo and Josh stole my goddamn heart. The only thing I rolled my eyes at was Lily writing to Ellen still but alas a book can’t be too perfect.
Atlas has always been book boyfriend material but this book really cemented him as one of the good guys, and if not one of the top 10 book boyfriend’s in existence. I was not expecting this to get 5 stars from me, my favorite book by Colleen Hoover is Reminders of Him but this really deserves five stars for how thoughtful, realistic and just downright beautiful this was.
It ends with us was about Lily and her journey to end the cycle of abuse. It starts with Us is about Lily and Atlas navigating life after ending their own cycles.
We’ve reached the shores turned into You can come home now.
5. JESSICA review: It Starts with Us – A Novel (2)
yes, i know this sequel is 100% fan service and a massive cash grab, but i am exactly the fan whose cash CoHo is grabbing.
because my main gripe about ‘it ends with us’ was that atlas wasnt the main focus.
so give me all of atlas and she can have all my money. that seems like a fair enough exchange.
except the jokes on her because i actually downloaded this off of zlibrary before she complained and got the website shut down.
thanks a lot, CoHo. love your books, including this one, but stay out of reader spaces. please and thank you.
EDIT: although it was a CoHo fan who posted about zlibrary on tiktok, it apparently wasnt CoHo herself who reported it (according to her statement on FB), causing the FBI to seize the domain. but do check the comments below for zlibrary alternatives to use instead. 🙂

6. KRIS review: It Starts with Us – A Novel (2)
‘It Starts With Us’ is the sequel book for Colleen Hoover’s best-selling novel “It Ends With Us”. This book begins immediately after “It Ends With Us” and is a must-read before moving on to “It Starts With Us”. ‘It Starts With Us’ has a more uplifting read than “It Ends With Us” and it was such a sweet light hearted conclusion to the story that pulled at our heart strings. This is a beautiful story of love, resilience, inner strength, kindness, compassion, beautiful friendships and support systems. Can’t wait to read another book by Colleen Hoover.
7. ERIN review: It Starts with Us – A Novel (2)
I have been with Colleen since the beginning in January of 2012. I was a stay at home mom at that point in my life and had recently rediscovered my love of reading. I read the blurb of Slammed on Amazon and bought the book immediately. I fell in love with her writing, and from that point on, I was an instant fan. I found her on social media, I bought the sequel to Slammed, Hopeless, and everything since. I joined her fan groups on Facebook (Fellow CoHort and WEBLICH) because, I, like many others, wanted a place to express how much I love her writing and meet others who did as well. I was lucky enough to meet her at a book signing in 2014 (she was exactly how she describes herself to be, RBF and all, lol) The most beautiful thing about Colleen, is her ability to perfectly capture every human emotion. I know she says she isn’t emotional, so maybe this is why it’s so easy for her to write emotion so well.
I was in an abusive relationship for 10 years. Unlike Ryle, he showed his colors early on, however I related to Lily’s need to excuse his poor behavior, and believe he would change. The abuse rarely got physical, it was more verbal , gaslighting, and other forms of mental abuse. But, let me tell you, when it comes to physical abuse, once is too much. My ex’s family often excuses and defends his poor behavior. The fact that Lily had Alyssa and Marshall on her side, was so beautiful. I often think if my ex’s family would stand up to him and stop enabling him, maybe he too would have a chance to be a descent human being. However, my ex’s family is the reason he is such a broken man. Ryle had a great family, but had something extremely traumatic happen to him at a young age that unfortunately formed the person he became. It doesn’t excuse his behavior by any means, but I believe Ryle does have a chance to become a decent human being someday. Your support system is everything.
As I read this book, I thought if only I had an Atlas to show me how a man should treat a woman, maybe I would have not put up with the abuse for so long. Luckily, I found my Atlas, but AFTER my divorce. I at least know I will never put up with that kind of abuse ever again.
I know Colleen never intended to write this book, but I am so glad she did. I needed Lily and Atlas to get their happy ending. I needed to see that Lily, Atlas, and Emerson may live happily ever after, because life is so full of drama and complications, it feels good to read that sometimes, everything does work out. This book was everything you are looking for as a fan of It Ends With Us. I don’t think anyone needs a review to encourage them to buy this book, but I had to share my thoughts because it meant that much to me.
Thank you for another amazing novel, Colleen. Keep em’ coming!!!
8. HEIDI review: It Starts with Us – A Novel (2)
I loved this book. Sometimes you just need one long beautiful epilogue to an intense book that deals with issues like spousal abuse and childhood trauma.
Atlas is the perfect man. He just understands what to do in the different situations supporting whatever Lily is going thought with Ryle. They just knew they belonged together and that too was beautiful.
The drive by hugs. The way he dealt with Josh, his mom and his relationship with “his therapist” Theo.
“I’m exactly where I belong, being loved by Atlas Corrigan”
So I’ve read how people were disappointed with this book but for me I needed that happily ever after. Still hoping to find mine ❤️
“How in the world she can make me feel so whole when I had no idea I was only half of myself without her”
It’s a beautiful story and Colleen just a gift of marking a conversation between two people, trying to figure it out, a conversation you want to sit in on. Be a fly on the wall for.
Having experienced and lived through the same type of relationship, I related to “It Ends with us” so have nothing but praise for this series 🫶🏼
“Maybe we’re so hungry for each other because we know it’s rare that we’ll get days like this. Or maybe it’s because we’ve missed each other for so many years”
9. STACEY review: It Starts with Us – A Novel (2)
✨ it starts with us ✨
“You’re a big part of the reason I got through it, even though you weren’t there.”
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Ever since the epilogue of ‘It Ends with Us’ I needed more of Lily and Atlas.
We all have those books that leave a part of themselves in our minds, in our hearts. For me, it’s Lily and Atlas’s story.
I knew that Atlas, Lily and Emerson’s story would be emotional and filled with challenges as they reconnected, and I was right. But it deserves to be read.
There are not many books that have moved me so deeply, but ‘It Starts with Us’ graces that list — a list I am proud of. The emotional connection both ‘It Ends with Us’ and ‘It Starts with Us’ has had speaks to the story and Colleen’s writing.
“I’m exactly where I belong, being loved by Atlas Corrigan.”
If you’ve read my post about ‘It Ends with Us’, then you know why the stories hold value in my heart.
Books have endless power. The fact that the important topics of domestic violence and neglect can be depicted in a way which educates people as to the implications of these… I applaud that so damn much.
DV is often represented in media inaccurately, creating a harmful narrative that further isolates people in these awful circumstances. Colleen has clearly done justice to highlighting DV and one woman’s story of breaking the cycle of abuse, shifting the narrative and, in a way, educating people in a heartbreakingly beautiful story.
This is obviously a topic I feel strongly and passionate about. So, I think it’s important to remind us that not every woman is able to, or they don’t have the means to, escape their abuser. It is a fact that so many women, due to flaws in society, have fallen victim to abuse and have lost their lives.
So while these books are about Lily, Atlas, their families — they represent a larger group who’s stories deserve to be heard.
10. BIBLIOPHILE UNICORN review: It Starts with Us – A Novel (2)
it starts with us, I have to say that in the previous book, I still felt like my heart was split into two because it bled for Ryle because he was supposed to be this amazing person for Lily but his anger issues just overcame him and it is what it ultimately broke them. A part of me remembers hoping that he’d be better he could fix this and then my other half was like no, Lily needs to leave him, he does not deserve her, these abusive relationship will go nowhere.
In this new book seeing that it continues right where it ended you can see how Lily still struggles with the divorce because she cannot really cut Ryle out of their lives, he’s the father of her child and the fact that he still has these passive aggressive kind of situations with her and when he finds out that Atlas is back in the game I can see more clearly all the bad things that he did in book one and I’m like wow I was really blinded a little by him and his charm. Which makes me think that People who are truly in a abusive relationship really have to go through a lot of things and the ones that don’t even have help or someone to encourage them to leave that relationship.
I can see how hard it can be for them. It is so good to see how Lily goes from still feeling guilty about leaving Ryle to taking her power back and putting boundaries in the relationship so she can feel safe and how her love and new relationship with atlas helps her see how she deserves to be treated. it’s just a beautiful story

“Maybe the idea of love ending being a negative thing is simply a matter of perspective. Because to me, the idea that a love came to an end means that, at some point, there was love that existed. And there was a time in my life, before you, when I was completely untouched by it.”

“It’s not the first time he’s mentioned I saved him back then, but every time he says it, I want to argue with him. I didn’t save him. All I did was fall in love with him.”
“But even monsters can’t survive without a heart beating inside their chest.”
“When I think about Ryle hitting you… I get absurdly angry. Because I love him. I do. He’s been my best friend since we were kids. But I also hate him for not being better. Nothing you have done and nothing you could do would excuse any man’s hands on you out of anger. Remember that, Lily. You made the right choice by leaving that situation. You should never feel guilty for that. Pride is the only thing you should feel.”
“Oh, are you at Lily’s?” Theo says, moving closer to the phone screen.
He’s grinning. “Did you finally kiss her? Can she hear me? What line did
you use to get her to invite you in? Lily! We watched people wed, let’s hop
into—”“I’ve spent my life not making bold moves when it comes to her. I wanted to make sure she knew where I stood this time.”

“Atlas is so angry, but this is an anger I’m not afraid of. I realize the significance of this moment. I’m alone with an angry man in my apartment, but I’m not in fear for my life, because he isn’t angry at me.”
“I’m getting a new therapist who doesn’t bully me.”
“sometimes the hardest decisions a person can make will most likely lead to the best outcomes.”
“And every time I kiss you there, I want you to remember why I kissed you there the first time.”
“Divorce is difficult. I knew it would be, but it’s so much harder than I anticipated. And navigating divorce with a child in the mix is a million times trickier. You’re stuck interacting with that person for the remainder of your life. You have to either figure out a way to plan birthday parties together or figure out a way to be okay with having separate celebrations. You have to plan on which holidays each of you get to spend with your child, which days of the week, down to which hours of the day sometimes. You can’t snap your fingers and be done with the person you married and divorced. You’re stuck with them. Forever.”
“In the past and for forever, you are my favorite person. Always have been. Always will be. I love you. Everything that you are.”
“Paris. Rome. London. I have no desire to sit on a hot beach somewhere. I want to see all the romantic places in Europe and make love in every city and take pictures kissing in front of the Eiffel Tower. I want to eat croissants and hold hands on trains.”
“I open the Notes app and click on the most recent one. As soon as I see the two words at the top, I drop the phone, pressing it facedown on my thigh. “Atlas.” “Lily.”
“I’m so happy you’re happy. That’s all I’ve ever wanted for you. But I will say, nothing beats knowing I’m the one you get to be happy with now.”
“I may not be perfect, but I don’t deserve to fear for my life every time I make a mistake.”
“I had fallen in love with her long before our first kiss, though. I loved her more than I had ever loved anyone before that moment. I think I loved her more than I’ve ever loved anyone after that moment. I think I still might.”
