Eve has a good life. She gets up each day, gets a kiss from her husband Nate, and heads off to teach math at the local high school. All is as it should be. Except…

Last year, Caseham High was rocked by a scandal involving a student-teacher affair, with one student, Addie, at its center. But Eve knows there is far more to these ugly rumors than meets the eye.

Addie can’t be trusted. She lies. She hurts people. She destroys lives. At least, that’s what everyone says.

But nobody knows the real Addie. Nobody knows the secrets that could destroy her. And Addie will do anything to keep it quiet.

From the New York Times bestselling author Freida McFadden comes a story of twisting secrets and long-awaited revenge.

➳ 4/5 stars ✶࿐
“DIGGING A GRAVE IS HARD WORK.”

Well, the opening quote may not be the most quotable, but that’s how this book kicks off. It starts with a barrage of questions—Who’s digging the grave? Whose grave is it? Why are they even digging it? Honestly, this prologue had me hooked, and I couldn’t put the book down. Miss Frieda sure knows how to deliver, and I had high expectations, which, let me tell you, were not just met but exceeded.

First of all, proceed with caution when diving into this book. Trigger warnings are a must as it navigates through sensitive and creepy themes that might leave you uncomfortable. 2. KAIL LOWRY reviews for The Teacher

Freida does it again. Easy, quick read. Page turner for sure. I never get through any other thrillers as quickly as Freida’s. I was nervous about the predictability of this one. But every time I thought I knew what was going to happen, there was a different twist. I’m wondering if there will be a sequel to this one…

3. NAE reviews for The Teacher

McFadden has once again delivered an unputdownable, gritty, twisty thriller. I always know when I start one of McFadden’s titles I am in for one hell of a ride.

Eve and her spouse, Nate, both work as teachers at their local high school. At the same high school, student Addie was the center of a scandal that rattled the school last year. This year, their lives intertwine and what occurs next you need to read for yourself.

For those who enjoy psychological suspense and books with strong, relatable characters, The Teacher is a must-listen.

4. JANB reviews for The Teacher

A completely bonkers fun read!

A compulsive thriller where everyone lacks a moral compass.

Fast/paced, addictive, with twists you won’t see coming, this plot-driven book kept me listening and helped end a months long book slump!

5. ROD BROOKS reviews for The Teacher

Twists until the very end. Can’t put this one down.

The Teacher by Frieda McFadden—what a ride! 😂 I gave this thriller ⭐⭐⭐⭐ because it was impossible to put down.

Seriously, it’s like binge-watching a soap opera, but with more designer shoes and fewer commercial breaks. The short chapters and multiple perspectives from key characters kept the drama flowing faster than high school gossip in the teacher’s lounge.

The plot? Two teachers, one marriage, and enough secrets to fill a yearbook. He’s the charming guy everyone loves, and she’s the tough-as-nails instructor with a serious shoe fetish. 👠 One of them falls for a student, the other for a shoe salesman—because why not? 😅 And both somehow end up at the same random pumpkin patch…for reasons I don’t want to share. 🎃

The final twist? Didn’t see it coming until the epilogue! McFadden nailed it. If you’re in the mood for a juicy, fast-paced read with surprises at every turn (and a closet full of shoes), this one’s a must!

6. JAMES reviews for The Teacher

I feel a little torn over this book. While the writing was great, and the twists really surprising, it was hard to cheer on the characters. I love a character that you just love to hate, but with this subject matter, I found it difficult to get behind any of them. There are obvious issues of grooming between Nate, Addie and Eve. I found it hard to believe that Eve didn’t know who Jay was. How a 16 year old could pass as a married, 30 something man is confusing. There is also the point where the author brings up that Hudson is excellent with math and lousy with English. That statement felt very intentional. In the end, the story was entertaining albeit a little confusing with the timeline of the ending, but the final twist…wow. I don’t approve of any of these characters actions or behaviors no matter what a state deems as legal age. I think that the story was well told and had me hurrying to find out the ending.

7. AMANDA KAY reviews for The Teacher

4.5 🌟
Freida, girlll.. you got me good with this one!
Omg the ending to this book was CRAZY! 🤯😱
This was the perfect, fast-paced read after my insanely long reading slump I found myself in last month! 🙌🏻

I also want to note that I have never hated every single mc by the end of a book before, but this book filled that spot! 🤣

Pre-read review:✨️✨️✨️

FINALLY out of a month long reading slump! 😅
Not sure what happened, but we back now! Lol
Hopefully some Freida will get me back on track 👀

8. RODINA reviews for The Teacher

⭐️ 5 stars —
⤿ minor spoilers ahead.

no book has ever enraged me as much as this one here.

freida mcfadden has finally delivered a five star plot for me. before anything though, check trigger warnings for this thriller prior to reading. it holds very sensitive topics and scenes that might make many readers extremely uncomfortable. at some point, i had to close my kindle to compose myself because the anger was chocking me.

and the ending? are you actually kidding me? i have been fooled, and i’m never going to trust another one of freida’s protagonists ever again. this woman can’t write ONE sane character. all of them are psychopaths, period.

however, on a serious note, i truly mean it when i say this won’t be for everyone. the contents are very intense, and the plot twist included in the final chapter actually turned my stomach upside down. being a teacher, and manipulating your students so recklessly, is one of the cruelest things a human being can do. it is unbelievable.

this was dual pov, and that made the experience ten times better. it was very interesting to be in both addie and eve’s heads and see their thought processes throughout the storyline. although i sometimes wanted to smash their heads against a brick wall, and shove some sense down their throats, they were quiet the intriguing characters.

finally, that epilogue should be burned in the depths of hell. eve, i trusted you, you piece of shit. never again.

9. SHAWNACI SCHROEDER reviews for The Teacher

– I read this book so fast! Literally didn’t want to put it down because every chapter left you on a mini cliffhanger. This book was a wild ride! This author is the queen of twists because I never know where the story is going to go which makes the story even more interesting! I don’t think there is another thriller author that I absolutely inhale like their writing!!

– I still don’t fully understand why we needed to know exactly what shoe Evie was putting on each day…like we get it she loves shoes! But the story overall was so gripping that I couldn’t put it down.

– I love that the story had multiple povs! I also love how this book enraged me from start to finish. Love when books can evoke so much emotion from me!! This book won’t be for everyone, but I loved it!!

10. ASHLEY GUERRERO reviews for The Teacher

As an educator, I was dying to get my hands on this one! McFadden’s suspenseful storytelling had me hooked until the jaw-dropping epilogue. While some parts were a bit unbelievable, the shock factor at the end is signature McFadden. Quick hook: Eve and Nate, a teacher-couple at their high school, find their lives entangled with the aftermath of a scandal involving a student named Addie. The alternating perspectives of Eve and Addie provide a gripping lens into this complex narrative.

III. The Teacher Quotes

The Teacher Quotes by Freida McFadden

The best book quotes from The Teacher by Freida McFadden

“But we’re never going to be able to be friends again. Things will never be the way they used to be between the two of us. Not since Hudson helped me kill my father.”

“And I told the police everything there was to tell. Well, not everything. I mean, I’m not a complete idiot.”

“If I were a cat, I would have peed on him, but since I’m a human, I plant a kiss on his lips that is markedly steamier than our usual three kisses per day.”

“You know things are seriously bad when even ice cream doesn’t help.”

“Digging a grave is hard work.”

“You like spending time with your books more than you like spending time with me. I don’t think it was true, but if it was, could anyone blame her?”

“I am so lucky. I have a beautiful house, a fulfilling career, and a husband who is kind and mild mannered and incredibly handsome. And as Nate pulls the car onto the road and starts driving in the direction of the school, all I can think to myself is that I hope a truck blows through a stop sign, plows into the Honda, and kills us both instantly.”

“Sometimes I try to kid myself that I’m an adult now, but how can I be an adult when I still feel fifteen half the time?”

“I remember when I was a little kid, I felt like anything that was wrong, my mom could hug me and make it right again. But there is no way for her to make any of this right again. Part of growing up is figuring out that your parents don’t have that ability anymore.”

“The thing I really need to worry about? Addie is in my husband’s class too.”

“He just called me his soulmate. It’s wild, because I feel the exact same way, but I would have thought I was imagining it if he hadn’t said it. “You can’t help who you form a connection with. Right?”

“And as Nate pulls the car onto the road and starts driving in the direction of the school, all I can think to myself is that I hope a truck blows through a stop sign, plows into the Honda, and kills us both instantly.”

“Not since Hudson helped me kill my father.”

“We never left it in the trunk after all.”

“I imagine dying is like standing on the precipice of that abyss, knowing that you will fall in at any second.”

“I recite to myself the poem he once wrote for me many years ago, back when I was fifteen years old and he was my English teacher”

“I have eaten lunch alone every day”

“He told me I was his soulmate.” She lets out a barking laugh. “I completely believed it. I was so stupidly in love with him. I would’ve done absolutely anything for him. And then when all that stuff happened with you and Mr. Tuttle, he said we had to cool it. He couldn’t see me anymore because there was too much scrutiny.” She chews on her nail again. “That’s why I was so mad at you this year. Nate barely spoke to me, and I felt like it was all your fault. Even though I realize now how dumb that was. And…I’m sorry for how I treated you.”

“but now all I want is for it to be over so that I can sneak off with Nathaniel to the darkroom.”

“The principal continues, “We would like to congratulate Mary Pickering!” What?”

“Seriously, what is her problem? She is so harsh. And she is married to a freaking poet—the nicest teacher in the whole school. Why is she like this? Why is she always”

“We are in a pumpkin patch.”

“Okay,” he says. “Lie down.” I stare at him like he has lost his mind. “What?” “We need to make sure the hole is the right size,” he says impatiently. “So you need to lie down so we can measure. You’re about the same size as she is.”

“I don’t feel as upset about her and Hudson as I used to. I still miss Hudson as a friend, but when I fantasize about a guy who I would like to be with, it isn’t him anymore. It’s Nathaniel Bennett.”

“You could say that. She…uh…she really liked shoes and used to come to the shoe store all the time, and, um, yeah.”

“I did take a self-defense class once, although sometimes I worry all it did was give me a false sense of confidence.”

“She’s just lucky that Nate sees something in her, because God knows I don’t.”

“I’m trying to resist you,” he murmurs. “You have no idea how badly I’m trying.”

“Nathaniel wrote just for me. I have every word memorized. Life nearly passed me by Then she Young and alive With smooth hands And pink cheeks Showed me myself Took away my breath With cherry-red lips Gave me life once again I narrow my eyes at Kenzie. “How do you know he wrote me that poem?” She starts chewing on her fingernail again. “Because he didn’t write it for you.”

“I bring it over to the detective. “She left this for Eve in her mailbox at school.”

“I stare at the words on the screen. If she were dead, I could still keep my job, and we could still be together.”

“So if she was having an affair with another man, is it possible she could have confided in him? And he somehow discovered what we did to her and now hopes to seek vigilante revenge?”
