Step back into the enchanting world of Prythian with Sarah J. Maas’s masterpiece, “A Court of Silver Flames” This gripping story follows Nesta Archeron as she navigates the aftermath of war, grappling with her own struggles and facing new challenges. Join Nesta on her journey of self-discovery, as she learns to confront her demons and find her place in a world teetering on the edge of chaos. Filled with compelling characters, unexpected twists, and heart-stopping moments, “A Court of Silver Flames” is a must-read for anyone who loves epic fantasy and thrilling adventures.

Sarah J. Maas’s sexy, richly imagined series continues with the journey of Feyre’s fiery sister, Nesta.

Nesta Archeron has always been prickly-proud, swift to anger, and slow to forgive. And ever since being forced into the Cauldron and becoming High Fae against her will, she’s struggled to find a place for herself within the strange, deadly world she inhabits. Worse, she can’t seem to move past the horrors of the war with Hybern and all she lost in it.

The one person who ignites her temper more than any other is Cassian, the battle-scarred warrior whose position in Rhysand and Feyre’s Night Court keeps him constantly in Nesta’s orbit. But her temper isn’t the only thing Cassian ignites. The fire between them is undeniable, and only burns hotter as they are forced into close quarters with each other.

Meanwhile, the treacherous human queens who returned to the Continent during the last war have forged a dangerous new alliance, threatening the fragile peace that has settled over the realms. And the key to halting them might very well rely on Cassian and Nesta facing their haunting pasts.

Against the sweeping backdrop of a world seared by war and plagued with uncertainty, Nesta and Cassian battle monsters from within and without as they search for acceptance-and healing-in each other’s arms.

About the Author (Sarah J. Maas)

Author Sarah J. Maas

Sarah Janet Maas, known as Sarah J. Maas (born March 5, 1986) is an American fantasy author known for her fantasy series Throne of Glass, A Court of Thorns and Roses, and Crescent City. As of 2024, she has sold nearly 40 million copies of her books and her work has been translated into 38 languages.

Sarah Janet Maas began writing what would become her debut novel, Throne of Glass, at age sixteen. After writing several chapters of the novel, then titled Queen of Glass, Maas posted them on FictionPress.com, where it became one of the most popular stories on the site. It was later removed from the site when Maas decided to publish the novel. The story line of the series is based on the story of Cinderella, with the premise of “What if Cinderella was not a servant, but an assassin? And what if she didn’t attend the ball to meet the prince, but to kill him, instead?” In 2008, Maas started sending the story to agents before signing with Tamar Rydzinski of The Laura Dial Literary Agency in 2009. Throne of Glass was purchased in March 2010 by Bloomsbury, who later purchased two additional books in the series. The series is available in 15 countries and 35 languages. While four prequel novellas set two years before the first novel were also published, these were later condensed into one book, The Assassin’s Blade plus an original novella. The second book of the series, Crown of Midnight was a New York Times young adult best-seller. The final book in the series, Kingdom of Ash, was released on October 23, 2018; the finished series comprised seven books plus the novella collection.

A Court of Thorns and Roses, Maas’ second fantasy series, is a loose retelling of the traditional Beauty and the Beast. The first book of the trilogy was written in 2009, but was not published until 2015. Due to the success and popularity of the original series, it was extended and a spin-off series was announced which would feature stories of other popular characters. The fifth book in the series and the first of the spin-offs, A Court of Silver Flames, was published on February 16, 2021.

On May 16, 2018, Maas announced her first adult fantasy series, Crescent City. The first book, titled House of Earth and Blood, was released by Bloomsbury on March 3, 2020. It was ranked one of the top twenty Science Fiction & Fantasy books of 2020 on Kobo. The sequel, House of Sky and Breath, was released on February 15, 2022 and won the Best Fantasy award for Goodreads Choice Awards in 2022. The third installation of the series, House of Flame and Shadow, was released on January 30th 2024.

The A Court of Thorns and Roses series was announced to be adapted into a television series for Hulu in 2021. In an interview with The New York Times, Maas confirmed that she was developing the project with the writers and the showrunner as executive producer.

In May 2023, The Verge reported that the cover of the UK edition of House of Earth and Blood uses an AI-generated image.

The banning of many is her books in Utah public schools has led to a surge in their popularity.

All the Stars ⭐️✨⭐️✨⭐️

I know a lot of people don’t like her…but Nesta is my favorite ACoTAR character, and has been since the end of book one/beginning book two.

I love female characters who are unashamedly prickly…who have defensive outer shells and soft inner cores…who secretly care that people don’t like them…but also simultaneously don’t give a shit.

Ever since Maas has been dangling the Nesta/Cassian pairing in front of us like so much chocolate, I have been dying for the focus to be on them. And after A Court of Frost and Starlight (which I also really enjoyed, although I know a lot of people didn’t), I was basically pining for their story.

Enter the announcement and wait for this book…the long, loooooooong wait…

Then it came out and I inhaled it. And it was everything I wanted it to be and more. Seriously, this was so fucking good, I could cry, folks.

Nesta’s transformation was amazing…her and Cassian’s transformation together was amazing…their banter was amazing…Rhy and Feyre as side characters were amazing…the main plot and all the sub plots were….amazing…

I think I’ve officially used up the word “amazing” for the day, so I’ll move on.

Simply put: I just loved everything about this book and enjoyed every single page.

Also, Maas is not even pretending anymore, you guys. This book was NOT young/new adult. It was FULL-ON adult. And it was…fucking delicious.

I’m already starting a re-read.

2. JESSICA reviews for A Court of Silver Flames

going into this book, it already had two strikes against it:

strike 1 – i hate nesta with every fibre of my being
strike 2 – i hate the mid-series cover change to something so low budget

so not a great start.

but honestly, shame on me for doubting queen SJM.

she took a character i hate and made me admire, sympathise, and root for her until the very end.

i dont quite love nesta (i may forgive her nasty behaviour, but i will never forget it) and she wont be my favourite character any time soon (i wanted soooo much more feyre, rhys, and az), but wow. her character development, her growth, her understanding, her progression. its all a thing to behold.

her story is something i think us readers needed, even if we didnt originally want it.

and i love how good cassian is to and for her. i fully support them as a duo.

so SJM did the impossible – she made like nesta. who would have thought.

  4. A Court of Frost and Starlight ★★★
[2024 reread] ★★★★
i feel like this book is very polarizing among readers, but i think i land on the unpopular side with believing this book is maybe sjm’s best. this is truly close to a five stars for me, and i think i was able to appreciate even more rereading it.

in this first book of the acotar spin-offs, we see nesta and cassian, both doing immense healing and growing. this book does star nesta, and truly seeing her reclaim her life, her safety, her agency… it was so beautiful. the very basic premise of this book is that nesta and cassian are tasked with tracking down three magical items, one of which one of the human queens may be using. we get to see nesta learn her own powers, we get to see her train with cassian, we get to see her love – both herself and new friendships… and yes, cassian – and we get to see her heal the way she needs to heal. it was honestly very powerful and, again, i really do not think sarah gets the credit for this book that she deserves.

oh, and there is a romance novel loving sentient house who stole my heart all over again. sometimes, all you really need is a friend who knows how to keep you warm in the way you need to be kept warm. i just loved this with my whole heart, friends.

i have now finished my reread of what is out in the acotar series and… i had such a good time rereading all of these. I think my biggest takeaway is… i didn’t love rhysand (this feels wild to even type). i feel like he was truly book boyfriend status back in the day, but now? i feel like he made me upset way more than he ever made me swoon during this reread. And this book really solidified that, and i think it was extra amplified because cassian is such a good boy. but again, this was such a fun reread that i really enjoyed doing, and we will see if i can reread throne of glass very soon!

trigger + content warnings (with minor spoilers for this story!): ptsd, grief, loss of loved ones in past (parents, siblings), blood, domestic abuse in past, child abuse in past, sexual assault in past, talk of rape in past, murder, death, talk of war, sexism, misogyny, nightmares, talk of captivity in past, drowning, attempted assault and rape, talk of suicide ideation, withholding very important medical information, high-risk pregnancy, ableist and dated language for people with disabilities, emergency child birth scene (involving death of both mother and baby… this world has the power of magic so things end up okay, but i think this could be very triggering to some readers, so please use caution.)

[2021 first read] ★★★★
listen, i can’t believe we are here either. but this just truly impacted me (and made me cry) so much. i will say I feel a little biased because nesta and cassian are two of my favorite characters from this entire series but… i still didn’t expect this to be so beautiful. and nesta finding these friendships and seeing them heal together, see their worth together, love unconditionally and unapologetically together? regardless of how hard and scary the journey to those steps were to even get to? seeing nesta realize she’s not a bad person, no matter what the world makes her mental health believe? i really loved it.

4. ALI GOODWIN reviews for A Court of Silver Flames

4.5 stars rounded up!! Ahhhh I had mixed feelings about this book for a good chunk of it because I wasn’t sure how I felt about Nesta. But by the end of it, I freaking fell in love with her. This book is so different from the rest of the books in this series in that it’s a story of healing, friendship, and love. And I loved all of the new characters we met, like Gwyn and Emerie. Their STRENGTH was truly inspiring, as was Nesta’s character growth.

I can’t wait for more books in this series. I’m not ready to leave this world🥹 The best series I’ve read in a really. long. time. I will be not so patiently waiting for a book on Az

*A Court of Silver Flames* is a captivating and action-packed addition to Sarah J. Maas’s beloved *A Court of Thorns and Roses* series. Fans will be hooked from the very first page as they are swept back into the enchanting world of Prythian.

This book centers around Nesta and Cassian, two complex and compelling characters who have captured readers’ hearts. The story is told from their alternating perspectives, allowing us to delve deep into their minds and emotions. Nesta’s journey of self-discovery is both raw and relatable, as she struggles to come to terms with her past traumas. Cassian, ever the loyal friend and warrior, is determined to help Nesta heal, even if it means facing his own demons.

The world-building is as immersive as ever, with Maas painting vivid descriptions of the Night Court and the surrounding lands. The plot is fast-paced and full of surprises, with high-stakes battles, steamy romance, and moments of profound tenderness. Readers will be on the edge of their seats, eagerly turning the pages to see what happens next.

7. DANI reviews for A Court of Silver Flames

4.5 / 5 stars (rounded up)

“Keep reaching out your hand.”

The action is fun but the plot is limited, as this story is much more of a character study of Nesta than anything else. A lot of people dislike this book because they hated Nesta in the original trilogy, but that’s the point. Nesta isn’t a good person, but she wants to be. You root for her to be better. I think this book provides a lot of important lessons to readers about how trauma and recovery takes on different forms, and how we should all “keep reaching out [our] hand” to those we love.

8. SARAH reviews for A Court of Silver Flames

Loved the story and Nesta’s growth and redemption. I enjoyed glimpsing into the lives of the characters in which I have become invested. The Valkyrie plot line was a nice addition. The bond between Nesta and her friends was a good subplot that added emotional depth and humanized Nesta for the readers. The gratuitous foul Ianguage was a surprise. It started in the last book and took off in this one. The sex scenes were also too many and a bit much. I found myself skipping over them. Instead of quitting, I kept going because I wanted to see how the story ended. I was not disappointed in the story.

9. ROBIN reviews for A Court of Silver Flames

↠ 4 stars

Nesta and Cassian truly deserve everything oh my god. I’m so glad I took a chance on this one since they were two of my favorite side characters in the previous books. They actually killed this. A Court of Silver Flames is everything you could possibly want in a novel, it’s heartwarming, bold, and sexy. Three combinations I did not know I needed, but am very thankful for. Hereafter whenever I say that I don’t like the acotar series, this book will not be included in that statement. Also I feel inclined to mention that this book is adult fantasy and includes content more suitable for 18+ readers. Please keep that in mind if you are under the target age group as this is a completely different genre than what the rest of the series was originally shelved in. That is all.

Maybe a more comprehensive review to come? We’ll see.

Trigger warnings: blood, violence, murder, death, death of a loved one (mentioned), grief, PTSD, abuse, sexual assault (mentioned), rape (mentioned), alcohol consumption, slut shaming, childbirth complications, depression, scars, suicidal thoughts

10. ALI L reviews for A Court of Silver Flames

Nesta, the most unlikeable person in literature, is understandably upset about being turned fae against her will. The lightning rods of her ire include her family and a magical bathtub. When her brother in law finally puts his foot down and sticks her in the Tower of Sauron, she pouts until a 500 year old man with bat wings yells at her. Nesta decides to retaliate by learning how to use stairs. She and the very old but hot winged man proceed to have PornHub sex in every room of the tower, which is also sentient and is 100% watching them all the time. How Nesta’s cervix survived the sex described is a mystery. She eventually stops being a huge bitch all the time (in too much cervical pain?) and saves her sister from a death her brother in law knew was going to happen and did nothing to prevent. Also there’s a hike that almost kills her. And a Death Swamp. Maybe lesbians? And Eris, who is my toxic trait.

Bonus Chapter: Azriel’s POV
Azriel is infatuated with Elain and his ardor is understandable — who wouldn’t want to bang a bowl of cottage cheese? He gives her the thoughtful, personal gift of a necklace at solstice and we find out what a little horndog he actually is when he practically takes her in the living room in a tornado of lust. I don’t yuck anyone’s yum so if he’s super into life-sized marionettes who garden, more power to him. They’re interrupted by Rhys, the High Lord of cock-blocking, who reminds Azriel that Lucien is upstairs and could challenge him to a fire duel or whatever fae dudes do, and also that he’s in love with Mor (thanks, boss). This is a bit of a sanctimonious stance to be taken by Rhys, who once sent his mate into a cannibal’s house for fun, but what are you going to do. Stamping off loudly, Az goes to the House of Wind and his shadows flirt with Gwyn because they’re all ramped up with nowhere to go. Azriel regifts his thoughtful, personal necklace to Gwyn. Could this be a new romance? Or is Azriel just going to be alone forever because it sure seems that way.

A Court of Silver Flames Quotes by Sarah J. Maas

The best book quotes from A Court of Silver Flames by Sarah J. Maas

“The first time I saw that look on your face, you were still human. Still human, and I nearly went to my knees before you.”

“Him. She would do it again, if forced to. And knowing that … She couldn’t bear that truth, either.”

“Glad to see you woke up ready to play, Nesta.” His voice dropped to a low rumble.

“Gwyn whispered, “I am the rock against which the surf crashes.” Nesta straightened at the words, as if they were a prayer and a summons. Gwyn lifted the blade. “Nothing can break me.”

“Amren put a hand above Nesta’s heart. “That’s the key, isn’t it? To know the darkness will always remain, but how you choose to face it, handle it… that’s the most important part. To not let it consume. To focus upon the good, the things that fill you with wonder.” She gestured to the stars zooming past. “The struggle with that darkness is worth it, just to see such things.”

“Never again.
Never again would she be weak.
Never again would she be at someone’s mercy.
Never again would she fail.
Never again, never again, never again.”

“Rhys lifted his head. “This is a bad idea.”
Cassian winked. “That should be written on the Night Court crest.”

“Nesta had loved Cassian since she’d first laid eyes on him. Had loved him even when she did not want to, even when she had been swallowed by despair and fear and hatred. Had loved him and destroyed herself because she didn’t believe she deserved him, because he was all that was good, and brave, and kind, and she loved him, she loved him, she loved him”

“I’ll be with you every step of the way. Just don’t lock me out. You want to walk in silence for a week, I’m fine with that. So long as you talk to me at the end of it.”

“I am worthless and I am nothing, Nesta nearly said. She wasn’t sure why the words bubbled up, pressing on her lips to voice them. I hate everything that I am. And I am so, so tired. I am tired of wanting to be anywhere but in my own head.”

“Your power is a song, and one I’ve waited a very, very long time to hear, Nesta.”

“So Nesta had become a wolf. Armed herself with invisible teeth and claws, and learned to strike faster, deeper, more lethally. Had relished it. But when the time came to put away the wolf, she’d found it had devoured her too.”

“Whatever you need to throw at me, I can take it. I won’t break.”

“She would not be mastered by anything again. She was the master of herself.”

“But I still don’t know how to fix myself.”
“There’s nothing broken to be fixed,” he said fiercely.”

“Power lay in her hand. Death gripped her by the other.”

“I am going to tell you that you will get through it. That you will face this, and you will get through it. That these tears are good, Nesta. These tears mean you care. I am going to tell you that it is not too late, not for any of it. And I can’t tell you when, or how, but it will get better. What you feel, this guilt and pain and self-loathing- you will get through it. But only if you are willing to fight. Only if you are willing to face it, and embrace it, and walk through it, to emerge on the other side of it. And maybe you will still feel that tinge of pain, but there is another side. A better side.”

“I am your mate, for fuck’s sake!” Cassian shouted, loud enough for people across the river to hear. “You are my mate! Why are you still fighting it?”

“Welcome back to the Night Court, Nesta Archeron.”

“She turned her head so slowly it was like watching a puppet move. Her eyes met his. Death watched him. But Death had walked beside him every day of his life. So Cassian stroked his thumb along her palm and said, “Hello, Nes.”

“The familiar male’s gaze snagged on her. “What’s her business here?” Nesta gave him a secretive smile. “Witchcraft.”

“Then Rhys fell to his knees and took Nesta’s hands in his, pressing his mouth to her fingers. “Thank you,” he wept, head bowed. Cassian knew it wasn’t in gratitude for Rhy’s own life that he knelt upon the sacred tattoos inked upon his knees.
Nesta dropped to the carpet. Lifted Rhy’s face in her hands, studied what lay in it. Then she threw her arms around the High Lord of the Night Court and held him tightly.”

“The cold of the gaps between stars, the cold of a world before light.”

“The book,” Nesta repeated to herself, staring at her porridge, “is about a book.” She cupped her forehead in her hands. “Idiot.”

“I want to take the road that no one dares travel, and I want to travel it with you two. No matter what may befall us. Not as Illyrians, not for their titles but as something new . To prove to them, to everyone, that something new and different might triumph over their rules and restrictions.”

“I wish for us to have the courage to go out into the world when we are ready, but to always be able to find our way back to each other. No matter what.”

“You can’t have it both ways. You cannot resent my decision to lead a small, quiet life while also refusing to let me do anything greater.”

“She was a wolf who had never learned how to be a wolf, thanks to that cage humans called propriety and society. And like any maltreated animal, she bit anyone who came near.”

“And even if the laws had allowed it, he would never take that away from her: the chance to save herself.”

“Az chuckled, the wind shifting the strands of his dark hair. “You two need a chaperone up here?” Yes. No. Yes. “I thought you were the chaperone.” Az threw him a wicked smile. “I’m not entirely sure I’m enough.”
