I. Book introduction
“House of Sky and Breath” resumes the story of Bryce Quinlan and Hunt Athalar. Bryce, a half-Fae, half-human, and Hunt, a fallen angel, navigate their complex relationships and responsibilities in Crescent City, a metropolis teeming with different species and hidden dangers. The novel intricately blends elements of mystery, romance, and high-stakes politics in a world where the hierarchy of angels, demons, and other creatures is ever-present.
Sarah J. Maas’s sexy, groundbreaking Crescent City series continues with the second installment.
Bryce Quinlan and Hunt Athalar are trying to get back to normal-they may have saved Crescent City, but with so much upheaval in their lives lately, they mostly want a chance to relax. Slow down. Figure out what the future holds.
The Asteri have kept their word so far, leaving Bryce and Hunt alone. But with the rebels chipping away at the Asteri’s power, the threat the rulers pose is growing. As Bryce, Hunt, and their friends get pulled into the rebels’ plans, the choice becomes clear: stay silent while others are oppressed, or fight for what’s right. And they’ve never been very good at staying silent.
In this sexy, action-packed sequel to the #1 bestseller House of Earth and Blood, Sarah J. Maas weaves a captivating story of a world about to explode-and the people who will do anything to save it.

About the Author (Sarah J. Maas)
Sarah Janet Maas, known as Sarah J. Maas (born March 5, 1986) is an American fantasy author known for her fantasy series Throne of Glass, A Court of Thorns and Roses, and Crescent City. As of 2024, she has sold nearly 40 million copies of her books and her work has been translated into 38 languages.
Sarah Janet Maas began writing what would become her debut novel, Throne of Glass, at age sixteen. After writing several chapters of the novel, then titled Queen of Glass, Maas posted them on FictionPress.com, where it became one of the most popular stories on the site. It was later removed from the site when Maas decided to publish the novel. The story line of the series is based on the story of Cinderella, with the premise of “What if Cinderella was not a servant, but an assassin? And what if she didn’t attend the ball to meet the prince, but to kill him, instead?” In 2008, Maas started sending the story to agents before signing with Tamar Rydzinski of The Laura Dial Literary Agency in 2009. Throne of Glass was purchased in March 2010 by Bloomsbury, who later purchased two additional books in the series. The series is available in 15 countries and 35 languages. While four prequel novellas set two years before the first novel were also published, these were later condensed into one book, The Assassin’s Blade plus an original novella. The second book of the series, Crown of Midnight was a New York Times young adult best-seller. The final book in the series, Kingdom of Ash, was released on October 23, 2018; the finished series comprised seven books plus the novella collection.
A Court of Thorns and Roses, Maas’ second fantasy series, is a loose retelling of the traditional Beauty and the Beast. The first book of the trilogy was written in 2009, but was not published until 2015. Due to the success and popularity of the original series, it was extended and a spin-off series was announced which would feature stories of other popular characters. The fifth book in the series and the first of the spin-offs, A Court of Silver Flames, was published on February 16, 2021.
On May 16, 2018, Maas announced her first adult fantasy series, Crescent City. The first book, titled House of Earth and Blood, was released by Bloomsbury on March 3, 2020. It was ranked one of the top twenty Science Fiction & Fantasy books of 2020 on Kobo. The sequel, House of Sky and Breath, was released on February 15, 2022 and won the Best Fantasy award for Goodreads Choice Awards in 2022. The third installation of the series, House of Flame and Shadow, was released on January 30th 2024.
The A Court of Thorns and Roses series was announced to be adapted into a television series for Hulu in 2021. In an interview with The New York Times, Maas confirmed that she was developing the project with the writers and the showrunner as executive producer.
In May 2023, The Verge reported that the cover of the UK edition of House of Earth and Blood uses an AI-generated image.
The banning of many is her books in Utah public schools has led to a surge in their popularity.

✅Reread- Nov 2023
I love this series so much. In fact I love anything written by SJM at this point. I got no words, so will keep it brief.
Am gonna cry, the ending to this is so chaotic, and heartbreakingly beautiful. I NEED MOREEEE.
I cannot wait for CC3. No matter what I say, am genuinely not prepared for it. Lol I thought I would react calmly to the ending after rereading, heck no.
I love Bryce and Hunt and their sizzling chemistry. The way the two care for each other is everything. Their journey is definitely going to be a painful one ahhh. Night and Day will be high on my list too, their dynamic is so beautiful, am expecting there will be a lot of angst and some forgiveness to come for them in the next book. Aidas will have some bigger role to play, and I can’t wait to find out. So much happens in this one with Ithan, Ruhn and Tharion too, I need to find out what happens next.
All I can say is if you haven’t read this series yet, you are missing out.

✅Original Review- Feb, 2022
I’M SCREAMING. LITERALLY. I might have died. WHAT AN ENDING. 😭❤️
I ABSO-FREAKING-LUTELY LOVE YOU SARAH J. MAAS.
OH. MY. GOSH. (Please excuse my screaming. I have lived).
Okay, I think I’ve calmed down enough to review this now that I’ve had time to process the bombshell Sarah dropped. I swear I’ve been admiring that last chapter ever since I finished it 😂😭 I had definitely stopped breathing, especially when the name of certain someone appeared.
Firstly, Kudos to Sarah for writing such a masterpiece. I think it’s going to be one of the best reads of 2022. I don’t think I’ve read a bad review of it so far and rightly so. The book starts off at a good pace which she maintained throughout, especially compared to House of Earth and Blood. This was so much better than what I had expected. If I could have given more than 5 stars, I would.
What really interested me was the character development of Hunt, Tharion and Ruhn in particular. Their journey is one worthy of praise. Hunt’s power and Ruhn’s purity is commendable. Tharion ended up being my favourite, I enjoyed his struggles and his tough decisions, it brought more personality to the limelight. I was hoping he would’ve made a different choice at the end but it’s going to be interesting to see what direction his story takes. Bryce was as usual badass. It was so good to see how she was struggling with Danika’s constant secrets, it made her seem more human, instead of a robotic push over. What lays ahead of her in the series is going to be so good to see. There was a lot of foreshadowing done, can’t wait to see how it unfolds. Cormac was a nice addition. Ithan and his struggles are shown well and the way he’s welcomed into the group is just heartwarming to see. Flynn and Declan as usual are underrated supporting characters. I feel we don’t give them much credit. The other supporting characters bring out great chemistry between the group as a whole. It just works out so well😩
The plot as a whole had a lot of twists, some of which had me shocked but it works well together. Their world just got bigger and there are lot of possibilities to explore, I do wonder how Sarah would incorporate it all. It’s going to be a challenge considering the fan expectations will hit the roof, but I bet she can pull it off.
Also, if anything happens to Hunt and Bryce, Ruhn and Tharion, I’m SUING. 👀
I already CANNOT WAIT for the third book in the series. It’s going to be mind-blowing for sure.
Through love, all is possible ❤️
2. ANGELICA reviews for House of Sky and Breath
I don’t have the words. I’ll try to write a review but bear with me.
First, let me just say that if anything happens to Ruhn and Hunt I am going to riot. And yes, that’s a threat.
Ok, now to the review.
This book stressed me. I can’t even count the number of times I had to put it down and walk away for a minute because I was scared to read what happened next. Every time I thought I knew where the story was going, a whole other layer of complications and magic and worldbuilding was added to the mix. It was a rollercoaster in every way.
While I did predict the outcome to several plot twists, like the identity of agent Daybright, there were a billion other twists that I didn’t see coming, like that ending for which nothing could have prepared me for!!!!. And honestly, it’s because half the time most of those twists were coming entirely out of left field and it was all Danika’s fault! I was getting second-hand embarrassment for Bryce every time something new was revealed about her supposed ‘best friend’. Danika had a whole secret life, filled with so many secrets and people that Bryce never knew about. After a while, it kinda felt like SJM just wanted to introduce new things and didn’t know how so she threw them into Danika’s bag of secrets and called it a day.
But, whatever. What I was really here for, more than the plot twists, was the characters! Gosh darn it, I love all of these characters so much!!! I really wasn’t kidding about rioting if anything happens to them.
Ruhn was my favorite. I picked him out in book one as my comfort character in this series and I am way too invested in this man’s well-being. Ruhn, Declan, Flynn, Ithan, and Tharion. I loved them. I loved the dynamic and I loved how Ruhn’s house just kept getting more and more crowded and they all just accepted it like it was nothing. That brood of highly competent, badass idiots are all my babies and they better come out unscathed.
Then there was Bryce and Hunt. I love them. The banter, the chemistry, loyalty, and love they have between them is everything. Nothing will ever come close. I was worried about Hunt, I’m not gonna lie. Sarah has a tendency to bait us into falling for one guy, just for another dude to come in for the win. But no, Bryce and Hunt were everything together. There’s nothing else to say.
Overall, this was great. I loved it. Not as much as I did the first book, I have to admit. But I loved it. And no, this wasn’t really a review. I didn’t even mention the plot of the novel, but if you’ve made it this far you probably already know what it’s about. I just needed to gush about these characters for a bit since no one in real life will get excited and talk about these characters with me.
So yeah. That is all. Go read this book. Talk about it with me in the comments. That ending left me with too many emotions. Goodbye.
But before you go!
My final question to this all, the one that has bothered me since book one and plagues me to this day: how does a faun dance ballet? Like actually though? You can’t be on pointe with hooves and bent legs. Every time they mentioned June dancing my brain almost spontaneously combusted trying to conjure up a visual! At this point, I just assume that Juniper is to ballet, what Feyre is to painting and I’ll leave it at that!
3. NAZ reviews for House of Sky and Breath
I AM NOT OKAY
i literally can’t believe it ended like that. i am crying, sjm you are evil for doing this to us !
omg the amount of twists and turns in this book had my head spinning!!
“He pressed a kiss to her mouth. The entire universe melted away with it. It was only them, would only be them, dancing together, souls twining. “Everything that ever happened to me, it was all so I could meet you, Quinlan. Be here with you. I’m yours. Forever.”
i honestly didn’t think i could love brycehunt even more than i already did and yes they finally fucked, who else cheered🤩
03/20

4. MIKA AUGUSTE reviews for House of Sky and Breath
what. the. FUCK. where do i even begin?
first of all, Bryce and Hunt. that’s it, that’s the sentence.
second of all, Ruhn and Day!!! i’ve never been so invested in a secondary relationship like i am with theirs…i was literally kicking my feet in the air and giggling every time they spoke to each other
and lastly, that entire plot blew my mind. like i’m genuinely speechless and if you know me that’s saying a LOT. one minute i was scratching my head like “huh? what is happening in this book right now?” but wow…it really did come together in the end.
sarah j maas truly has the mind of a mastermind and you can’t convince me otherwise.
5. ELI STAR reviews for House of Sky and Breath
Pure excellence, just like every other SJM book I’ve read
Wow. I don’t even know where to start, except to BEG you to run to your nearest book retailer and pick up this series. Pick up all of Sarah J Maas’s series, as every single one of them is excellent and I have yet to read anything by her that I don’t absolutely love with all my heart. I’ve been following her career since the early Throne of Glass days, and seeing her find so much success and such a devoted fan base (one I’m proudly part of) that enables her to continue creating these incredible stories and equally spellbinding worlds? It brings me so much joy, and also a deep sense of kinship with the rest of the fandom who love her characters as much as I do.
I’ll preface this actual review by saying I had already very confidently figured out two of the major reveals that are spelled out towards the end of the book. I guessed them early on (one I had figured out midway through House of Earth and Blood) and I have to admit – I had the audacity to feel disappointed because it had all just seemed so OBVIOUS to me and it didn’t seem like a typical SJM ending for there to be nothing crazy for me to gush over. That being said – despite those two mysteries having been pretty clear to me, I still LOVED the book. I loved the characters, I loved the dialogue, the internal struggles, the power moves, the sense of adventure the book carried through it. The way SJM writes fantasy, as always, is divine. The friendships and relationships snd love stories, as always, were poignant and touching, and they elevated House of Sky and Breath from a story about different types of magical beings living in a fantastical world to a story about the human condition and what it means to survive, what it means to sacrifice for something bigger than yourself, and what it means to truly love someone. So, even with those two reveals at the end not really being reveals to me, this story was so gorgeous that it was still a 5 star read for me. Now it seems like those reveals were red herrings of a kind, in that they kept the reader focused on those specific mysteries instead of wondering what else could be at play.
BUT – then the real ending came, something that I never saw coming even ONCE and turned everything on its head so thoroughly that I had to eat all of those “disappointed feelings” with a monstrous slice of oh so humble pie because HOLY CRAP. THAT IS HOW YOU END ON A BIG REVEAL! It was fantastic. The ending was so surprising and delightful that I immediately wanted to run to everyone I knew and beg them to HURRY UP so we could talk about what this means! So well done and just so enjoyable in every single way. If you have been holding out on reading SJM and haven’t yet discovered what the fuss is about, I urge you to open up one of her books and find out for yourself why so many people are such devoted fans. Thank you for this beautiful second installment. I simply can’t wait to see what happens next!

Thrones, Courts, and Now a Dash of Sky – Sarah J. Maas, the Queen of Chokeholds!
Hold onto your bookmarks, fellow bookworms, because Sarah J. Maas has unleashed another literary beast upon us – “House of Sky and Breath,” the second installment in the Crescent City series. It’s like she took a sip of creativity potion and said, “Watch me conquer your soul with words!”
First things first, if you haven’t devoured the A Court of Thorns and Roses books, you might be wandering through Crescent City with a perplexed expression like a lost tourist. Trust me; you’ll want to visit the Courts before taking this scenic route. And if you haven’t feasted your eyes upon the Throne of Glass series, well, buckle up, because you’re in for a royal treat. But hey, if you’re feeling rebellious, you can jump straight from A Court of Thorns and Roses to Crescent City – just be prepared for a magical rollercoaster that might leave you questioning your life choices.
Now, let’s talk about the chokehold this book has on your emotions. If “House of Earth and Blood” left you gasping for air, “House of Sky and Breath” will have you clutching your heart, desperately trying not to spoil anything for your fellow readers. The Asteri have kept their word – mostly – but rebels are rebellious, and the threat of chaos looms like a storm cloud over a cozy reading nook.
Bryce Quinlan and Hunt Athalar just want to Netflix-and-chill their way to a normal life, but when you’ve got rebels stirring up trouble, staying silent is about as likely as convincing a cat to take up ballroom dancing. The choice is clear – fight for what’s right or risk the wrath of fictional characters who’ve never been good at keeping quiet. Spoiler alert: They choose the epic battle route.
In this 27-hour-and-42-minute epic audiobook experience narrated by the enchanting Elizabeth Evans (seriously, give this woman all the awards), Maas weaves a story so captivating, that it’s like she’s playing a symphony on your heartstrings. Move over, Netflix and Hulu – audiobooks are the new binge-worthy entertainment, and Elizabeth Evans is our auditory goddess.
“House of Sky and Breath” isn’t just sexy and action-packed; it’s a literary explosion that makes you rethink your life choices. Maas doesn’t just write books; she crafts immersive universes where love is the key, and everything – and I mean everything – is possible. The wait for the third book? It’s like waiting for a magician to reveal their final trick – torturous and exciting all at once. This will leave you spiraling for all the theories you can get your hands on, I know I have.
So, grab your headphones, dive into the world of Crescent City, and prepare to be mind-blown by the queen herself, Sarah J. Maas. Through love, all is possible, and through Maas, all is enchantingly unpredictable.

9. GILLIAN reviews for House of Sky and Breath
“Through love, all is possible.”
5 dazzling stars! This is an action-packed fantasy about power, betrayal, passion and love. Sofie, who has vital information is captured and killed when saving her brother from a death camp. Bryce and her friends try to find out what vital information Sofie discovered. They also learn new secrets about Danika and what she knew before she died. Bryce discovers that the information Sofie knew will change the world forever and everything that she believed to be true.
I absolutely loved this book! The pacing was perfect and the book was action-packed from the beginning till the end. I love Bryce so much, she is caring, kind, strong, and will do anything for the ones she loves. I’m in love with Hunt, he is sweet, caring, devilishly handsome and strong. I also love Ruhn, he is kind, passionate, smart and very handsome. I loved the banter between Bryce and Hunt. I really liked the side characters, they are each unique and have their own stories and ambitions. I was completely swept away by the beautiful writing and the fantastical world. I loved the inclusion of fantastical creatures including Fae, wolves, witches, dragons, angels, mer and more. There were so many shocking twists and turns in this book that I didn’t expect. The ending was so shocking and amazing, I’m so speechless! I can’t wait for the next book!
10. DANI reviews for House of Sky and Breath
5/5 ★’s!!!!!
I am UNWELL!!! This book was pure perfection. From start to finish, I was wholly captivated but that ending?! I can’t even breathe properly!
This entire book has been such a puzzle. I was yearning to know the real secrets of this world. You think you know where you are going and end up somewhere else entirely .
Maas’s worlds will forever have a place in my heart. I don’t have the words for how much I enjoyed this one!
Bryce is an incredible character to follow as was every character introduced. We got to go into such depths with many of our main characters, which really separated this book from others.
They are trying to navigate a normal life, but when more and more information lands in their laps don’t they have an obligation to know/do more?
The new group, the new characters, the freaking PLOTS?! Everything was *chef’s kiss*. The villains… wow. Whatever I expected was highly underwhelming compared to what Maas delivered.
Each chapter felt like entering a new dreamscape. I am obsessed with this story and for those who have read, I OBVIOUSLY can’t wait to dive into the next book. My heart is exploding with emotions at the moment!
III. House of Sky and Breath Quotes by Sarah J. Maas
The best book quotes from House of Sky and Breath by Sarah J. Maas
“Our love is stronger than time, greater than any distance. Our love spans across stars and worlds. I will find you again, I promise.”
“Males will always try to control the females who scare them. Marriage and breeding are their go-to methods.”
“A rare benefit of being able to switch between human and Vanir identities—and of being a rare human who’d made the Drop.”
“Hello, Bryce Quinlan. My name is Rhysand.”
“But wherever you’re headed when this life is over, Quinlan, that’s where I want to be, too.”
“Hunt’s voice was a thunderclap as he said behind her, “Light it up, Bryce.”
“His smile broadened as he walked out. “I never would have met Bryce.” And every horror, every nightmare … all of it had been worth it for her.”
“Death is the only victor in war”
“You remind me that I am alive.”
“If you’re looking for How Not to Be an Asshole, it’s shelved between Bye, Loser and Get the Fuck Out.”
“Ruhn looked at his sister and said softly, “You brought so much joy into my life, Bryce.”
It was perhaps the only goodbye they’d be able to make.”“The male stepped forward, tucking in his wings. He smiled slightly and said in the Old Language, in a voice like glorious night, “Hello, Bryce Quinlan. My name is Rhysand.”
“It means that he’s going ballistic in the way that only mates can when the other is threatened. It’s what happened then, and what’s happening now. You’re true mates—the way Fae are mates, in your bodies and souls. That’s what was different about your scent the other day. Your scents have merged. As they do between Fae mates.”
“Want to count my abs when we get home from the ballet?”
“Bryce smiled sweetly at Cormac. “I get that you want to play Broody Prince, but don’t ever fucking interrupt me again.”
“What she wanted was a true heart to love her, to run wild with her through the forest.”
“We don’t let them decide who we get to be. We’ll carve our own paths.”
“The male blinked. His eyes were the same shade of violet blue as Ruhn’s.”
“Ruhn Danaan knew three things with absolute certainty: He had smoked so much mirthroot that he couldn’t feel his face. Which was a damn shame because there was a female currently sitting on it. He had downed an obscene amount of whiskey, because he had no idea what the female’s name was, or how they’d gotten to his bedroom, or how he’d wound up with his tongue between her legs. He really fucking loved his life. At least … right now.”
“You really want to say you’re dating the Umbra Mortis?”
“Hel’s armies shall strike at your command, Bryce Quinlan.”
“You’re a power player now, Bryce, wether you like it or not.”
“If I’d gone to you in Nena, I never would have come here. To Lunathion.” His smile broadened as he walked out. “I never would have met Bryce.”
And every horror, every nightmare… all of it had been worth it for her.”“The most brutal, sadistic asshole to have ever walked Midgard’s soil. Motherfucker Number One.”
“Oh gods,” Bryce said, choking. “Hunt is a fucking prince.” She laughed bitterly.”
“If my powers only work if my big, tough male helps me out—” “It can’t be romantic?” Hunt demanded. Bryce huffed. “I’m an independent female.”
“I know the perfect thing to shove in that trap of yours to shut you up.” Bryce winked saucily. “Careful. I use teeth.”
“Snacks?” Fury said, but opened one of the rear doors. “You know,” Bryce drawled, “garbage food that provides zero nutrition for our bodies, but lots of nutrition for our souls.”
“You remind me of the wind.” He tried to explain. “Powerful and able to cool or freeze with half a thought, shaping the world itself though no one can see you. Only your impact on things.” He added, “It seems lonely, now that I’m saying it.”
“Beyond Sofie, beyond Emile … This world could be so much more. This world could be free. I don’t understand why you wouldn’t want that.”
