I. Book introduction

John Grisham says THE TUMOR is the most important book he has ever written. In this short book, he provides readers with a fictional account of how a real, new medical technology could revolutionize the future of medicine by curing with sound.

THE TUMOR follows the present day experience of the fictional patient Paul, an otherwise healthy 35-year-old father who is diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. Grisham takes readers through a detailed account of Paul’s treatment and his family’s experience that doesn’t end as we would hope. Grisham then explores an alternate future, where Paul is diagnosed with the same brain tumor at the same age, but in the year 2025, when a treatment called focused ultrasound is able to extend his life expectancy.

Focused ultrasound has the potential to treat not just brain tumors, but many other disorders, including Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, hypertension, and prostate, breast and pancreatic cancer.

For more information, you can visit The Focused Ultrasound Foundation’s website. Here you will find a video of Grisham on the TEDx stage with the Foundation’s chairman and a Parkinson’s patient who brings the audience to its feet sharing her incredible story of a focused ultrasound “miracle.”

Readers will get a taste of the narrative they expect from Grisham, but this short book will also educate and inspire people to be hopeful about the future of medical innovation.

Plot

Paul is a 35-year-old man with a family, who is in good health. His brain develops a tumor, which causes gradual impaired function of his left side, and eventually a complete blackout. He is diagnosed with glioma, the severity unknown. Paul undergoes the most effective treatment currently available, which involves brain surgery to remove the tumor, followed by chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Following the surgery his tumor is diagnosed as malignant cancer, a full-on glioblastoma. Paul’s doctor informs him that the average life expectancy after this diagnosis is approximately 12 months. Side effects of the cancer treatments prevent Paul from fully resuming his daily life, including his inability to go into work. In 6 months, the tumor reappears, treatments become ineffective, and Paul dies 9 months after the initial diagnosis.

Paul’s story is then retold, supposing that he had been born 10 years later. At the time of the discovery of his brain tumor, in 2025, medical treatment has advanced such that his glioblastoma is immediately diagnosed, and focused ultrasound treatment is available for treating it. Paul receives the treatment as a non-invasive outpatient procedure. The treatment is so effective, he is able to return to work and resume his normal activities. Three years later, the tumor returns, and Paul gets the focused ultrasound therapy again, with similarly positive results. Four years after that, the tumor regrows again, and Paul receives the treatment a third time.

At this point, the narrative ends and Grisham acknowledges that eventually, the cancerous brain tumor will kill Paul. But the extension of Paul’s life and greatly reduced medical bills is worth it. Following this, Grisham explains the details of focused ultrasound therapy, including how it works, how far along the research and testing is for its application in various medical diagnoses, and what obstacles remain for its widespread adoption. The book concludes with an introduction to the Focused Ultrasound Foundation and an appeal for support from the reader.

Editorial Reviews

“John Grisham’s readers have always been captured by his eloquent exposition of injustice. In this short story “The Tumor,” he has stepped outside of the courtroom and legal system and into the arena of medicine and health care and in doing so has perhaps found his most passionate voice. There is no greater injustice than a cruel invader called cancer who steals from the innocent their most precious position of life. As in all his writings, Mr. Grisham in portraying this injustice evokes within us a calling to demand its remedy. As in the court room, this battle for justice has begun.”
Andrew von Eschenbach, MD, Former Commissioner of the FDA and Former Director of the National Cancer Institute

“Grisham has gone rogue, turning his formidable writing skills into an outreach to us all in an effort to shed light on a new, disruptive medical technology that has the potential to save lives. Seldom does a writer at the top of his game step away from his career to speak out on a revolutionary medical therapy. He says this is the most important book he has ever written. I believe him. This book is an amazing read!”
Antonio Mendez, Retired CIA officer, author of ARGO

“What incredible potential to improve outcomes and quality of life for patients while decreasing the cost of care. I’ve seen the power of this technology firsthand with doctors at the University of Virginia. Just as that experience brought home the reality of the technology for me, John Grisham’s The Tumor gives readers a better picture for what the future of medicine can look like with focused ultrasound.”
U.S. Senator Mark Warner

“Grisham’s book is changing the game. He has pulled an exciting new medical technology out of the labs of academic research and onto the pages of an enlightening book. He paints a great picture of how sound waves may shape the future of medicine.”
Ed Miller, MD, former CEO, Johns Hopkins Medicine

“John emotionally captures the tremendous opportunity for Focused Ultrasound to provide a new revolutionary disruptive therapy that will improve, extend and save lives.”
Steve Rusckowski, President & CEO, Quest Diagnostics Inc.

“John Grisham utilizes his great storytelling talents to bring to life the science that may change the treatment of some of the most dreaded cancers. Grisham’s view into one innovative therapy will give hope to millions about treatments that don’t poison and destroy, arriving long before the yet-to-be-discovered ‘individualized medicine’. The book combines fact and future in an enlightening and informative way.”
Howard Stevenson, Professor of Entrepreneurship, Emeritus, Harvard Business School

“The book is a terrific hybrid of novel and technology review. It provides a dramatic sense of the difference between what is available now and the possibility of the future. So many of us know people that could be the protagonist, that exploring the experience from the patient point of view is very compelling.”
Gordy Slack, neuroscience journalist and author

“Sooner or later many are likely to benefit from this game changing technology. Now the task at hand is to cause its development to occur as rapidly as possible. By increasing awareness, The Tumor can help make focused ultrasound available sooner to countless patients worldwide with a host of medical conditions.”
Rick Goings, CEO, Tupperware Brands

“Focused ultrasound therapy is far from fictional: It’s real and rapidly gaining fame. But to see John Grisham move in this book from the legal world into medicine is to realize that the focused ultrasound story needs to be shared and there is no better way than through one of our best storytellers.”
Carol Loomis, Retired Fortune Magazine editor and writer

“A radical and potentially revolutionary view of the future of brain cancer treatment and cure. Using non-invasive focused ultrasound in the treatment of brain tumors with minimal side effects or down time seems like science fiction. In the book “The Tumor,” John Grisham describes this highly innovative clinical process, which consists of applying sound waves at a frequency past the hearing capability of a human ear. The technology is no longer science fiction and may one day rewrite the outcome for cancers of the brain, breast, liver, prostate, and pancreas as well as many other serious diseases.”
Richard Merkin, MD, President and CEO of Heritage Provider Network

“John Grisham is amazing. For 25 years, he has entertained and educated us with his legal thrillers. Now, he is opening our minds to one of the most exciting medical treatments of our time. The Tumor is a quick but truly fascinating read.”
Bill Crutchfield, Founder & CEO, Crutchfield Corporation

1. MONNIE reviews for The Tumor

This short “book” (67 pages) puts the spotlight on focused ultrasound, a medical treatment procedure involving “intersecting beams of high-frequency sound concentrated accurately and precisely on tissue deep in the body…” The noninvasive procedure is in various stages of development for healing more than 50 diseases and conditions such as Parkinson’s and tumors of the brain, liver, pancreas and lung.

The goal, no doubt, is to ramp up awareness of the technology and the need to speed up the approval process for more applications and financial contributions toward the cause. In the interests of full disclosure, Grisham’s friend and neighbor Neal Kassell, M.D., a neurosurgeon and proponent, founded the Focused Ultrasound Foundation (based in Charlottesville, Virginia), and Grisham is on the Board of Directors. It’s equally important to note that the book is free for downloading at various websites including Amazon.com.

Incorporating narrative and graphics, Grisham outlines the benefits of the technology and how it has the potential to improve both quality and length of life for cancer patients who qualify for treatment. More information, including a link to a video of Grisham’s TEDx presentation, can be found at the Foundation’s website (links are provided in the book).

Grisham calls this the most important book he has ever written. I call it highly informative and more than worth the brief time it takes to read it.

The Tumor – New Solutions for Serious Health Problems

Although Grisham’s book was an entirely different format from his previous books, I chose to read it because that’s the way he presented the book. It certainly didn’t lack for interesting story telling for which Grisham is so well known. I was curious about the content of the book and the new procedure he presented really intrigues me. I wish we were financially able to contribute to the research going on right now. We feel a close connection to the example presented in the beginning. Our oldest great-grandchild went through a serious surgery a year ago remove a very large tumor from his brain. It had gotten so large that it was preventing the fluid from draining and it had also grown around the brain stem down to the 1st vertebrae. He was experiencing horrendous headaches but the doctor attributed them to some childhood malady. After he started throwing up from the pain, his mom decided to take him to the Children’s Hospital ER and get a C-scan of his head. The doctors on staff refused because he was only nine years old. His mom insisted but the doctors wouldn’t budge. She said, “Ok, I’m going to sit right over there by the waste basket so he’ll have something to throw up in. I’m not leaving until you do the C-scan. I’ll just order in some pizza when we get hungry.”

She sat down and began waiting for the doctors to finally agree. They had explained why they didn’t believe a C-scan was a good idea but the mom insisted they do it anyway. One of the doctors talked to her several times, but she repeated what she needed them to do. Finally, after waiting a few hours, a doctor came in and told her they would do the C-scan on her son. That’s when they saw the huge tumor in his brain. He was scheduled for surgery two days later. Will the tumor grow back? We don’t know, but what a difference it would have made for him if he could have had the Focused Ultrasound treatment instead of the surgery. If the tumor does grow back, we hope he can go where it’s offered instead of going through what he did the first time. Thank you for sharing this valuable information with the world, John Grisham! I agree that this is the most important book you’ve written. You’re a master story-teller and I really enjoy reading your books.

A New Cancer Technology

This is a very easy to read story of a man with brain cancer.

Part one tells of the traditional way of dealing with it. Part two tells of a new & improved way that gives the patient more time to live, without surgery, while allowing him to keep working. The cost is less, although still a lot. Plus, this new technique is not a complete cure.

I commend Mr. Grisham for bringing this new technique to light & bravely telling the downside of chemo & radiation, while it is still being used today. I think what has saved him from the claws of the now “standard of care” medical establishment is that this new technique is an extension of the old.

I would love to see Mr. Grisham’s bravery extend to writing about other cures of cancer. Cures totally erasing cancer from the body forever. Cures that the medical establishment, sadly, are continually trying to kill.

I once asked a doctor why oncologists don’t want to use methods other than radiation & chemo to treat their patients. Her answer shocked me to my core! What she said was: “We’ve spent so much money on the equipment & machines used for delivering chemo & radiation, that we have to use them to get our money’s worth!” (This is absolutely true. There were others in the room as shocked as I was.)

Because of my search for a cure, I’ve found that there are many ways to cure cancer. So, Mr. Grisham, would you please write about these too?

A good place to start would be the following online programs: “The Truth About Cancer”, ” The Sacred Plant”, “Chris Beat Cancer”, just to name a few. I do hope you will be challenged to check these out, Mr. Grishman! And, not just you, but everyone who wants to learn! You will be enlightened & feel a great relief, if you do have cancer!

P.S. The reason for my 4 star rating is because no other treatments were mentioned.

John shows the reader another scenario which brings the latest medical technology into being called focused ultra sound and how Paul goes through this treatment to eradicate his tumor without having to go through the invasive surgery he had ten years earlier and can extends one’s life expectancy.

Focused ultrasound has the potential to treat not just brain tumors, but many other disorders, including Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, hypertension, and prostate, breast and pancreatic cancer.

5. GISELA HAUSMANN reviews for The Tumor

John Grisham ends “The Tumor” on: “This is the most important book I’ve ever written.” –John Grisham
Wow!

I’ll admit that this book caught me by surprise, by double surprise.
Though I haven’t read a book by Grisham in a long time (read: A Time to Kill, The Firm, The Pelican Brief, The Client, The Runaway Jury) I thought I could guess what I’d receive when I picked up “The Tumor” on free promo. No, I didn’t read the book’s description; the whole world knows that John Grisham writes courtroom drama so I thought that’s what I’d get.

Surprise #1: ‘The Tumor’ tells the real life story of Paul, a 35-year-old banker, an exceptionally healthy man, his wife, Karen, and their three young children. Even though Paul jogs twenty miles a week, plays golf, doesn’t smoke, and takes no medication, out of the blue Paul experiences some health problem which he contributes to stress on the job. Sooner after, he has a seizure and passes out. Tests reveal he has a brain tumor, which turns out to be the most catastrophic, glioblastoma.
It seems to me that’s the tumor John McCain was diagnosed with. For sure Ted Kennedy, Beau Biden, Lee Atwater, George Gershwin, and Wilma Rudolph died from a glioblastoma.

In typical Grisham style the story moves forward quickly, alas, no last minute brilliant lawyer intervention is possible – Paul dies.

Why is Grisham telling the story? Because a cure will be possible in the (relatively near) future – the best kept secret in medicine – focused ultrasound. No invasive surgery, no draining treatments, no exhausting, maybe not really working chemo therapy.

Surprise #2: Grisham wants to speed up the development of the procedure. He is on the Focused Ultrasound Foundation Board of Directors , hence lent his talents to tell the story right to this awesome cause.

For me, that’s where the circle closes. The book is again the story of a few brave men and women, who don’t wait for pharmaceutical corporations to develop new expensive chemo therapies. In comparison to the big pharmaceutical corporation the Focused Ultrasound Foundation is like that clever small town lawyer who does the right thing and “fights for the cause.”

Whoever you are who reads my review:
Grab “The Tumor” by John Grisham. It’s free. Read it, study it, and maybe donate. You are one of your loved ones may need this book’s knowledge in the future.

Deeply impressed and grateful,
5 stars,
Gisela Hausmann

6. ANUSHKA ARITRI reviews for The Tumor

Came across this, and found his altruistic spirit moving enough to compel me to read the book. Only 52 pages, and it gives you a close-up of outdated vs. modern technology, with its benefits, costs, and effects all quite literally portrayed.

It isn’t a book up you pick up to enjoy your daily bout of escapism. It’s to inform you of what’s out there, and that we’re still blessed to be in an age where such medical treatment is possible. Grisham’s writing style is nothing like his usual. It doesn’t grip you into believing you’re a (often) snazzy lawyer, taking your chances against the world. It describes a life afflicted by malignant tumors, and the domino effect that it causes.

This could easily have been a really well designed hospital pamphlet. Instead, by form and style, it has turned into something more. It informs, and it urges its readers to understand what is really available to them already, and what they can do about it. This is what writers should do, when they know they’ve got a solid fan-base, and they will be heard, regardless of what they write.

Write fiction, write responsibly, and write to not only entertain, but also to save lives. That’s what makes a author unforgettable, even if its just for an age.

7. SWARNA reviews for The Tumor

SWARNA reviews for The Tumor

Yes it’s not fiction, but it’s bringing a technology to the attention of the many.

Loved this little book and thank you to Mr Grisham for bringing this to the attention of your readers and followers. Having read some of the less positive comments, the common themes seem to be “Grisham should not be peddling this”, “this isn’t fiction”, “should be written as medical brochure” etc., I have a genuine question though: how many of us read a medical journal to pass time? How many of us would have googled Focal Ultrasound Technology just for the heck of it? And how many of us would ever pick up a medical brochure unless we were looking for it? (And, does Grisham not write non-fiction too?)

John Grisham has used his name to further a technology relatively unknown to most healthy (sometimes even the unwell) population; he is “peddling” this to bring it to the attention of his wide readers base.

Please let’s not undermine every single thing just because internet has allowed us to become “reviewers”. I agree with the reviewers who are reviewing solely the writing and not the content. However, those who are trying to criticise the content as not being the usual Grisham material, I genuinely humbly suggest reading a little about the book before you pick it up. A simple Google search would prepare you quickly for what the book is about to deliver.

8. ADRIAN DOOLEY reviews for The Tumor

This is free on Amazon and well worth a read. It’s very short, 67 odd pages including some pages of diagrams and credits so you will read it in no time.

It’s shining the spotlight on a new treatment for various diseases including brian tumours and has a story of a thirty something married guy with kids diagnosed with a grade four malignant tumour.

The tumour is unfortunately incurable and we get the story of the process of treating it in the present day and the suffering that entails and then from the perspective of the same diagnosis in ten years time, where the patient is treated with the new treatment, focused ultrasound.

It concludes with details about this treatment which is still in its infancy and its potential(and current) uses in helping in the treatment of cancer amongst other things.

I, like many I suspect, had never heard of focused ultrasound therapy before and if the words written are to be taken at face value, could be a huge step forward in the treatment of many cancers in the years to come.

Most, if not all of us have been affected by cancer in our lives in some way, so I’m sure this will be of interest to everyone. It takes little effort to read, being so short and is more like an information leaflet than a book, with a very short story in the middle to demonstrate the the treatment it is espousing.

If you have a few minutes spare I would certainly recommend giving this a read. It could be a little glimpse into the future of the treatment of cancers in the future and its all the more startling, not just by the effectiveness of the treatment over current methods, but also the nature of both treatments, with the sheer brutality of current methods being in stark contrast to the non evasive, walk in walk out nature of focused ultrasound.

9. FRED reviews for The Tumor

High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) is a medical device for brain tumors developed & being approval. Paul(35) has “Glioma” (left side brain) tumors causing blackouts. Paul undergoes treatments for brain tumors, followed by chemotherapy & radiation treatments. The cancer is “malignant”, life expectancy is 12 months & he dies in 9 months.

HIFU can diagnose “brain tumors, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, hypertension & other cancers.” With HIFU, Paul received “outpatient” brain treatments & returns to a normal life. After 3 years, Paul gets the cancer again, treatment again, with positive results.

Grisham says the cancerous tumor occurs again but future research will improve the process.

The book introduces the Focused Ultrasound Foundation from Ed Miller, M.D., of Johns Hopkins, stating “Grisham has pulled an exciting new medical technology out of the labs of academic research and onto the pages of an enlightening book.”

10. RITA MACLEAN reviews for The Tumor

Do Miracles Still Happen?

What if finding out that your loved one had aggressive Stage 4 cancer, or Parkinson’s, or malignant lymph nodes was no longer a death sentence but instead, a very treatable condition. I have 3 such loved ones right now who would love to hear they could be treated with non-poisoning, non-invasive outpatient therapy.

ThisI story isn’t a novel, not science fiction. It would be a very real and affordable hope for the future of modern medicine if the Focused Ultrasound Foundation and varied research associates could move forward by breaking through the concrete ceiling built by pharmaceuticals, insurance companies and government (hand-in-the-pocket) lobbyists.

Get the word out! Fight for better health care! Make a difference!

The Tumor Quotes by John Grisham

The best book quotes from The Tumor by John Grisham

“Focused ultrasound utilizes intersecting beams of high-frequency sound concentrated accurately and precisely on tissue deep in the body, much as sunlight passing through a magnifying glass can be focused to burn a hole in a leaf.”

“There are many more applications, including uterine fibroids, prostate cancer, and essential tremor, where focused ultrasound treatment could potentially cure the disease.”

“While this is happening, powerful chemotherapy agents enclosed in microscopic nanoparticles are injected intravenously.”

“Six years after her Parkinson’s disease diagnosis, Kimberly suffered from involuntary shaking and could no longer ride her bike or enjoy other forms of exercise. She was successfully treated in a focused ultrasound clinical trial at the University of Maryland. She is now back on her bike and says the clock has been turned back on her life.”

“Paul’s story to have a happier ending—for ourselves”

“powerful chemotherapy agents enclosed in microscopic nanoparticles are injected intravenously. These circulate with the blood in every tissue and organ in the body, but the chemotherapy drugs are inactive because they are trapped inside the nanoparticles. After eliminating all of the tumor that can be seen on the MR, the surgeon then refocuses the ultrasound to the surrounding brain to activate the nanoparticles, which release their pharmacological payload in the precise area around the tumor where residual microscopic extensions of the tumor have infiltrated. This allows very high concentrations of the drugs to be delivered focally to the brain while minimizing systemic side effects. The remainder of the chemo-laden nanoparticles will be excreted.”

“The tumor will eventually take Paul’s life. However, focused ultrasound therapy could transform a fatal condition into one that is chronic, but manageable. In contrast to the best current treatment circa 2015, the futuristic ultrasound therapy depicted here circa 2025 could potentially be accomplished on an outpatient basis without multiple days of hospitalization; without surgery and its attendant risks of infection and complications like blood clots and brain damage; without the harmful effects of radiation; and with minimal side effects of chemotherapy due to focused drug delivery. The net result could be a dramatic improvement in the quality and longevity of countless lives, and decreased cost of treatment.”

“Focused ultrasound is a new, revolutionary, groundbreaking, non-invasive therapeutic technology that has the potential to transform the treatment of a variety of serious medical disorders in addition to brain tumors, improve outcomes, and decrease the cost of care. It could become an alternative to, or complement for, traditional surgery, radiation therapy, and drug delivery.”

“This is not science fiction. Around the world, 50,000 men with prostate cancer have been treated with focused ultrasound. Over 22,000 women with uterine fibroids (benign tumors of the uterus) have been treated, thus avoiding hysterectomies and infertility. Clinical trials for tumors of the brain, breast, pancreas and liver, as well as Parkinson’s disease, arthritis, and hypertension are inching forward at over 225 research sites around the world.”

The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood

The Handmaid’s Tale is a novel of such power that the reader will be unable to forget its images and its forecast. Set in the near future, it describes life in what was once the United States and is now called the Republic of Gilead, a monotheocracy that has reacted to social unrest and a sharply declining birthrate by reverting to, and going beyond, the repressive intolerance of the original Puritans. The regime takes the Book of Genesis absolutely at its word, with bizarre consequences for the women and men in its population.
