1. LTJ reviews for Ward D

“Ward D” by Freida McFadden starts off with a bang. Immediately after reading Chapter 1, I was instantly hooked as I always am by anything McFadden writes. I’ve been a huge fan of hers ever since I read “The Housemaid” as her style of writing, great storytelling, insane plot twists, and how she fleshes out characters are all top-notch.

In “Ward D”, I loved how she had alternating timelines that helped fill in the backstory and add more context to what was going on in the present. This is very hard to do but McFadden did it flawlessly as all the layers of suspense were awesome while reading. There are even some alternating timeline chapters that leave on a cliffhanger that I just couldn’t wait to see what ended up happening.

The overall story is fantastic and as usual with McFadden, it’s always a thriller that keeps you on your toes until a crazy plot twist or insane reveal happens. Don’t worry, I won’t ruin anything for you but this is an addictive story with a lot of tension, suspense, and some good twists that were decent for the most part.

Even though “Ward D” is a genuine pageturner, I actually expected more from the ending. It was good but I was hoping for just a bit more. Especially after some events and situations that transpired involving some parts that weren’t all that believable to me. Especially when it came to the main protagonist. Regardless, I genuinely enjoyed reading this as I always do when it comes to McFadden.

I give “Ward D” by Freida McFadden a 4/5 for being another gripping psychological thriller in her arsenal that was a solid read. I enjoyed all the characters, alternating timelines of the past and present, plot twists, and all the suspenseful thrills. The story was good but I wish the ending was a bit wilder and had her usual drop-the-mic reveal but regardless, this was a good read. McFadden is an amazing author and I will read every single thing she writes because she is that incredible. “Ward D” was fine but not extraordinary and either way, I will recommend this book to those that love a good, suspenseful thriller.

Amy is a medical student, and she’s going to spend one night in Ward D, where she once went.
She’s afraid and she’s got secrets, as all Freida’s characters.
My first thought when she gets there, it’s what real happened, but as the story developed, I started to have other ideas.

I can’t say this was one book that surprised me, but I liked the story anyway, and kept me hanging until I finished the book.

3. KAIL LOWRY reviews for Ward D

I’m a huge fan of Freida’s books and normally I’m hooked really early on – 4 stars this time from me but only because it took a slightly longer for me to get into it & start putting together the pieces, although, did I really fit the pieces together??? LOL. I would still recommend to anyone who loves the psychological thrillers.

4. TAURY reviews for Ward D

Ward D by Freida McFadden is a book that brings all your nightmares to life. First thing through the book I am thinking is HIPPA Violation over and over in my mind. Then I realize I DO work in a lock unit at work. Whoa! So here I am in the dark with my thoughts and dreams thinking of Spider Dan and Damon! Oh! That Jade! She is pure evil! Sociopath! They are all crazy….or are you the crazy one? Look out for little girls in frilly dresses!

5. FAITHFULGIRL reviews for Ward D

I knew when I read the synopsis of this book that I had to read the whole thing. I could have easily read this in one setting but life demanded other things in between chapters. After reading some reviews from other readers, I especially wanted to read this book, not because their reviews were awesome, but because they rated it so poorly! What?!?!

When I was in nursing school, we had to do a rotation in a psych unit. It was one of the most terrifying, yet fun times of my life. Just like Amy, we were taught that these are humans, not conditions, and that’s how I saw this. Afterall, if you spend anytime in a psych unit, you will begin to wonder why you’re not there yourself.

Some readers found the story to be ridiculous and overdone. I mean, in truth, that’s a possibility considering that Ward D is on the 9th floor. Other floors above and below could have possibly heard the commotion, especially at night. But having worked in a hospital, and part of that time being at night, you don’t always tune in to other things around you. What happened on Ward D could potentially happen in a hospital setting. Likely? Very low chances but it *could* happen.

I thought I had this figured out and I mostly did but I still enjoyed this read very much! This is only my second book by this author (I read The Teacher first) but I enjoy her style of writing!

6. TAYLOR MAY reviews for Ward D

Ward D by Freida McFadden
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Ward D was a fast paced mystery thriller that draws you in during the first couple chapters. You are following a medical student, Amy Brenner, as she spends her first night working in her local hospital’s inpatient mental health unit.

The plot in Ward D is one that can be easily binged. You are introduced to other medical students and the patients in Ward D. You get to know the patients backstories and what they are in “Ward D” for. While the mental health rep is not the greatest, and they aren’t explained very well, the story line was easy to understand and follow. The twist at the end will leave you speechless and asking more questions, BUT the last chapter will have you turning you head and wanting more.

7. CHRISTINA JONES reviews for Ward D

must read thriller

So jade and Damon were the true master minds of what happened in Ward D! In the end Amy started dating Will. The little girl that Amy saw was indeed a real thing even to the end of the book! I did feel bad for Cameron because he didn’t deserve to die, well no one did! I thought though the person that was throwing themselves at the door was Cameron the whole time. So I knew something about that room was kind of predictable but not all of what was truly behind the seclusion door! I felt the emotions of thriller, scary, suspense was great in this book! Must read!

8. DIANE CHAPKA reviews for Ward D

Fast paced, a page turner

Med student Amy is scheduled to do her 13 hour overnight in Ward D the psychiatric ward at the hospital. She is extremely nervous about it for a few reasons, revealed as the story continues, and then unexpectedly her ex- boyfriend is also on the rotation with her as well which is just adds to her reticence. Turns out her high school best friend is currently a patient on the ward which stirs memories for Amy as the night becomes more and more concerning. This is a fast paced, you want to find out what’s happening, read in 1 sitting, page turning thriller. I really liked it!

9. SHERRI THACKER reviews for Ward D

Enter Ward D with medical student Amy Brenner. She has to work in Ward D for 13 hours straight. The psychiatric ward is locked up tight and she has a code to get out IF she needs to! Amy is afraid to stay in Ward D for the night because she has a secret no one else knows. This had me glued to the pages from page 1 and I could not stop reading! Freida is the master of psychological thrillers and this is my new favorite! This is book #14 for me of hers and yes, she’s my favorite thriller author too! Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this early release in exchange for my honest review. To be published May 8, 2023. Run out and buy it THAT day!

PS I have now also listened to Ward D on Audio and I now give it 10 stars. I just love this book so much!!!

10. MALLORY reviews for Ward D

This was an entertaining book. I listened to the audiobook and really enjoyed the narrator a lot, she really brought the main character to life. I will say after having worked in locked residential units there was a lot of the story that was unbelievable and I would have expected better even from the medical student Amy, but if you suspend that disbelief it was fun. I did predict the biggest twists coming, but it didn’t stop me from enjoying it. Amy is doing a psych rotation as a medical student and has been dreading her shift in the locked psychiatric unit. When she gets there she is dismayed to see her ex-boyfriend traded shifts and is on call with her, but that is nothing compared to the rest of the night. Amy’s best friend from childhood Jade is also on the unit, as a patient. As things get more and more creepy it becomes clear to Amy that something is wrong on Ward D.

“A mental health diagnosis is not a death sentence. All the patients in this unit are just trying to get better.”

“There are a bunch of mugs lined up by the sink. I pick up one that says “If you’re happy and you know it, thank your meds.”

“How does somebody get to the point where their brain stops functioning like a normal brain? That their reality completely breaks from the reality that every other person in the world lives in? And what’s to stop it from happening to anyone else?”

“I scan the room, from my Jonas Brothers and Taylor Swift posters on the walls to my pink and green bedspread to my bookcase and the trophy I won last year”

“After all, if you meet someone who is truly mentally ill, that’s the only way to know that you’re sane.”

“A mental health diagnosis is not a death sentence.”

“She could have been barred from seeing the show at all for pulling a stunt like that, but she did it anyway. That’s Jade—always willing to take risks.”

“After all, many people with schizophrenia aren’t aware that they’re experiencing symptoms.”

“Nicole must be a patient here that Mary is familiar with. I’m not thrilled about the fact that she has mistaken me for one of the patients.”

“But my sense tells me that somebody here is trying to hurt me…” “Who?” Cam asks. Spider-Dan takes a shaky breath. “Damon Sawyer.”

“But that’s not the real reason I am dreading my night on Ward D. I can’t tell Dr. Sleepy the real reason I was tossing and turning last night. I can’t tell anyone the real reason I’m desperately terrified of Ward D.”

“How does somebody get to the point where their brain stops functioning like a normal brain? That their reality completely breaks from the reality that every other person in the world lives in?”

“Because that’s what he told me he’s going to do.”

“Damon Sawyer wants to kill every single one of us tonight.” “Why…” My voice is a hoarse croak. “Why do you think that?” “Because that’s what he told me he’s going to do.”

“does somebody get to the point where their brain stops functioning like a normal brain? That their reality completely breaks from the reality that every other person in the world lives in?”

“No.” Dr. Beck frowns. “He’s not ‘a schizophrenic.’ We don’t refer to patients that way. Miguel is a human being, and he’s more than his psychiatric diagnosis. He is not a schizophrenic—he’s a man who has schizophrenia. Do you understand that?”

“Mrs. Pritchett proceeds to show me about five billion Polaroid photos of her brand new kitten.”
