I. Book introduction
Dead Med follows Heather McKinley, a medical student dealing with heartbreak after her longtime boyfriend leaves her. As if that weren’t enough, she’s also failing her anatomy course—a fact made worse by her school’s grim nickname, “Suicide Med.” You see, at least one student from this school has died every year, and no one seems to know why. Suicide or something more? That’s the central mystery driving the plot.
From #1 New York Times bestselling author Freida McFadden comes an electrifying medical thriller, Dead Med, originally published as Suicide Med.
“All I can think about is how pathetic it would be to die in the anatomy lab. The last thing I want is to become one of the dead bodies.”
When Heather McKinley dreamed of becoming a doctor, she imagined curing sick kids and sporting pink stethoscopes. She never anticipated the sleepless nights, grueling exams, and endless labs. And she certainly never knew that her medical school earned the nickname Dead Med thanks to the tragic history of students overdosing on illegal drugs.
But Heather would never consider doing anything like that. That is, until her longtime boyfriend dumps her, she finds herself failing anatomy, and her world starts to crumble.
Everyone has a breaking point.
Then, on the night before the final exam in anatomy, a shot rings out through the hallways of Dead Med.
The school has claimed yet another casualty. One of Heather’s classmates has done the unthinkable, and before her desperate 911 call even connects, it will happen again.
And the night is just beginning.
NOTE: Dead Med was originally published as Suicide Med. Dead Med is a revision with 20% new material.

1. SHERRI THACKER reviews for Dead Med
Dead Med by Freida McFadden is a revision of her 2014 version of Suicide Med. I did read the first one and I’m one of those who cannot remember many books once I’ve read them. So with that being said, I loved this latest by Frieda and had a hard time putting it down. Per Freida’s own words “This is a remake of Suicide Med. I changed 25% of the book and cut the length of the book by 20% and eliminated a strange plot point.” So I loved it! But then I am a huge fan of Freida McFadden and I love everything she writes!
2. RACHEL THE PAGE-TURNER reviews for Dead Med
DeWitt Medical School is nicknamed “Dead Med” because over the past few years, there have been quite a few deaths, many being drug overdoses. Some students even jokingly say the professors make classes so difficult that everyone is forced to resort to amphetamines to get by. They even have a wellness counselor, Dr. Patrice Winters, that all students are mandated to see. The drug epidemic at the school is the primary mystery/thrill, but we have some excellent characters as well, most of whom are in the same group in their anatomy lab. I love the way this book is laid out; sometimes that makes a big difference and this author never misses. We have several different parts, each narrated by our main characters:
- Heather, who feels like she’s in over her head at DeWitt. Her long-distance college boyfriend broke up with her after only a few weeks apart, and she can’t seem to understand anatomy. She’s struggling and questioning if she’s really cut out to be a doctor.
- Abe is a giant teddy bear of a man, making his way through med school by working at a clinic as well as trying to keep up academically. He is immediately smitten by Heather but her boyfriend was in the way, at first. Soon she’s available…but he quickly screws things up and has a hard time getting over it.
- Rachel is bored and doesn’t like anatomy class but she’s hoping her penchant for sleeping with her professors can at least help her pass. She finds her roommate Heather, who hums a lot, very annoying; she feels the same about most people, as she’s more on the dark and brooding side.
- Mason is the sexy and charming fuckboy whose parents have a lot of money and a lot of pull. His father is a world-famous cardiovascular surgeon who expects nothing but perfection from his son. It’s not exactly a psychologically healthy thing for Mason, nor is his inability to sleep.
- Sasha is a quiet girl, studious and serious about school after an accident as a child. She wants to make her Russian family proud by becoming an American doctor, and desires to be first in the class, but she is always coming in second to Mason no matter how hard she studies.
- Dr. Conlon is their anatomy professor, who happens to be disabled. He left medical school after his injury, but it’s clear that teaching anatomy is his life.
Between this group of exhausted and stressed out people and the mystery of who is behind the spread of drugs on campus, this was a very fun book that needed to be read in one sitting (and the epilogue was perfect, as per usual!). I’m very close to finishing Freida McFadden’s books, and “Suicide Med” was going to be next. Then this came out, and after a bit of Googling, it sounded like Freida wanted people to read this remake first. I’ll still read Suicide Med; I’m interested to see how it compares to this one. Dead Med is great, though! 4.5 stars, rounded up.
3. EMMA reviews for Dead Med
This book was not at all what I expected. I really enjoyed the different POV’s.
Whilst this book was a thriller and succeeded in being pretty suspenseful, I actually found myself pretty invested with the love story of two of the characters. Quite unusual for me. The characters really grew on me.
A great story, which kept me guessing, with a very worthy epilogue.
I will certainly not be rethinking my career choices and attending med school based on this book! 🩸
4. ANGEL reviews for Dead Med
Amazing and full of twists!!
I’m not much on digital reading but seeing so many 2024 books recaps on my social media I decided to give it a shot again. I used to LOVE to read but it’s a hobby that had gone by the wayside over the years. A friend recommended Frida McFadden to me and let me just say after finishing this one I will DEFINITELY be reading more!! I finished this book in less than 12 hours and that was with several lengthy breaks. I love how it introduced you to all the characters and then told you about the same situations but from each character’s point of view. I couldn’t put it down!!! I highly recommend and I must find my next one to read!!
5. KEYSA RIGNEY reviews for Dead Med
Cutthroat at its finest
Dead Med (originally titled Suicide Med) was once again a great book by Freida McFadden.
Our list of characters: Heather, Abe, Mason, Sasha, Rachel, Dr. Conlon (Anatomy professor), Dr. Patrice (psychologist) and then the clinic doctor. The first five characters are med students that are taking their anatomy class.
There is a drug problem at Dead Med a few of the students are trying to figure out where it is coming from.
Heather is the most laid back missing her boyfriend back home (who isn’t missing her for obvious reasons), Abe is infatuated with Heather but she doesn’t realize it. Mason is at the top of the class and very ambitious thanks to his surgeon father. Sasha is smart but she can’t seem to beat Mason. Then there is Rachel, sort of the outcast of the bunch who seduces teachers for better grades. Dr. Matt Conlon knows all about Rachel’s past with other teachers and things get out of hand with the two. Dr. Patrice, is a piece of work. Just how much does she and the clinic doc know about the drug problem at Dead Med??
6. JESSESTARR reviews for Dead Med
An Edge of Your Seat Medical Thriller!
“I found Dead Med to be a gripping and fast-paced read that was difficult to put down. The only downside was that the story ended too soon, leaving me wanting more. The characters were well-written, but I wanted to know more about them. I was sorry for Mason and the end of his promising career when it wasn”t his fault!
7. AJ reviews for Dead Med
Heather Mc Kinley has a dream of becoming a doctor. She didn’t realize how much stress she would be under or how hard it would be. The school she is going to has been nicknamed Dead Med because of the students who have died there. Every student is out for themselves but how far will they go to be the top of the class?
I liked the multiple points of view from the students and how everything connects in the end. The stress, the sleepless nights and the pressure is pushing all of the students and some can’t handle the pressure. Heather never thought she would end up in this situation.
The students joke that one of the professors must be behind the drugs on campus. Before the final exams another tragedy will happen on campus.
I just love this author. I didn’t read the original of this book so I’m not sure how it changed. I just know if Freida wrote it I want to read it.
8. DAWNICA reviews for Dead Med
BEST AUTHOR EVER!!!
She makes other authors disappoint. SERIOUSLY! If you haven’t read any of her books? DON’T…. Seriously! You are creating a serious ADDICTION if you do!
I found her by posting on Facebook for recommendations… because I am a serious Psychological thriller addict and was running out of options. Several people recommended her. I said ” OK what’s your favorite book?”. They all seriously, honestly, I kid you not….replied, ” I can’t pick one. They are all GOOD!”
Oh come on!! Seriously?!?!?! So that was the first time I ever heard that response from book lovers!
They weren’t wrong. Seriously! Just pick one, start anywhere and try not to let the page turners take over all of your time as you devour each and every one of them LOL. My family luckily has not abandoned me but that’s probably because I have read all of her books now LOL
9. EMILY MASON reviews for Dead Med
I really love what she did with editing this one! It’s just different enough from Suicide Med to feel like a brand new book! I had so much fun reading this as per usual with Freida’s books, the twists and turns and whodunnits to keep me on my toes. So excited for October!
10. CHRISTINA GARCIA reviews for Dead Med
4.75⭐️
Just as good the second time. I read this when it was Suicide Med and loved it. I’m a med student and I had such a deep appreciation for the aspects of med school portrayed in this book. It was also a gripping thriller on its own.
I liked both versions and would have rated it the same either way. This one was a bit more condensed and there was a very funny plot point edited out of the new version, pertaining to Abe and an eye…iykyk. If you have both copies, I’d recommend reading both especially if you love Freida as much as I do.
III. Dead Med Quotes by Freida McFadden
The best book quotes from Dead Med by Freida McFadden
“And one day, you can come back with a shotgun and blow the brains out of all the other students.”
“Although I can see in his eyes that he truly doesn’t care. And that is just super weird, folks.”
“It takes me several beats to realize there’s a gun pointed at my face.”
“Even if I study night and day nonstop, even if every grade I get tops Mason’s, he’ll always have the edge over me. No matter what. Because Mason has one quality that I don’t possess: charisma.”
“For example, he once wore a hoodie in the lab and then wore it home, despite it being stained with cadaver juice.”
“If Abe wants to waste his time walking me to my car, that’s his business. “This is Connecticut, you know,” I say. “Not Detroit.”
“allow the eye to move are controlled by three pairs of cranial nerves: the oculomotor nerve, the trochlear nerve, and the abducens. The mechanism is pretty complicated, and weakness of any one of these nerves causes the affected eye to deviate in a way that would cause vision to double.”
“It’s not about enjoyment,” I say. “I want to be with you. We both knew the long-distance thing was going to be hard.”
“In every class,” she says, “ten people flunk and need to repeat the year. Five drop out, never to return. And, of course, in the last few years, there’s always one who…”
“I don’t wear makeup, but it probably wouldn’t help. I’m just not pretty, end of story.”
“The second I get married, I am done doing laundry.”
“After all, what’s the worst that can happen?”
“water is the only molecule where the solid form has a lower density than the liquid form. That’s why ice floats on water. I always found that fascinating.”
