He has a way of erasing the pain with a single look, a single touch. As much as she wants to turn off her feelings and endure the heartache on her own, she can’t deny their intense attraction.

Plot Summary

Dealing with Loss and New Beginnings
In Full Measures by Rebecca Yarro, we meet Ember Howard, a college student who’s trying to cope with the recent loss of her father, a military man who died in a helicopter crash. Ember’s mother is devastated by the loss and her brother has been deployed to Afghanistan, leaving Ember as the sole caretaker of her family. To make things even more complicated, Ember is struggling with her feelings for her new neighbor, Josh Walker, a charming hockey player.

Despite her initial reluctance, Ember finds herself drawn to Josh, who seems to be the only person capable of making her forget her pain. Their relationship grows, and Ember begins to find solace in Josh’s company. However, things take a turn when Josh, who has been keeping a secret from Ember, is called back to active duty in the military and leaves without a proper goodbye.

Heartbreak and New Realities
With Josh gone, Ember is left once again to deal with her grief alone. She throws herself into her studies and her part-time job at a local bar, trying to distract herself from the pain. But despite her best efforts, Ember can’t seem to get Josh out of her mind. In an attempt to move on, she starts dating a fellow student named Mark, but it’s clear that her heart still belongs to Josh.

As the story progresses, Ember’s life becomes increasingly complicated. Her brother returns from Afghanistan, suffering from severe PTSD, and her mother’s mental health continues to deteriorate. To make matters worse, Ember discovers that Josh has been injured in combat and is in a coma. Feeling helpless and overwhelmed, Ember is forced to confront the harsh realities of life and love.

Unwavering Love and New Beginnings
Despite the odds, Ember refuses to give up on Josh. She visits him in the hospital every day, hoping for a miracle. Her unwavering love and determination catch the attention of Josh’s family, and they invite her to visit Josh’s childhood home, where she learns more about his past and the hardships he’s faced. This experience strengthens Ember’s resolve to fight for Josh, and she begins to believe that they might have a future together after all.

In a heart-wrenching twist, Josh wakes up from his coma, only to discover that he has lost his leg in the explosion. He’s devastated by the news and pushes Ember away, believing that he’s no longer worthy of her love. But Ember refuses to give up on him, and with the support of their friends and family, they both come to terms with their new realities and find a way to move forward together.

Conclusion
In the end, Full Measures is a powerful story about love, loss, and resilience. Ember and Josh’s journey is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the healing power of love. Despite the obstacles they face, they ultimately find their way back to each other, proving that with enough determination and full measures of love, even the most broken hearts can be mended.

1. CHRISTY reviews for Full Measures

Rebecca Yarros is one of those authors I’ve been meaning to read for the longest time, but never had. I’m so glad I picked up the audio book of Full Measures and finally gave her a try. I enjoyed this book lots and will definitely be reading more books in this series!

Three knocks can change everything…

December Howard’s life completely changed with just 3 knocks on her door. Ember has spent her life as an army brat, but now her world is torn apart. Her dad left to serve his country, and he’s not coming home. Ember has the weight of the world on her shoulders. She becomes the strength her family needs. She helps her younger brother and sister when her mom can’t function. She tries to keep her family together. But it’s hard.

Josh Walker is a few years older than Ember. She had a high school crush, but hasn’t seen him in years. He coaches her younger brother’s hockey team and shows back up in her life. This time, he notices her. He knows she needs someone. He’ll be whatever she needs.

“I’m your whatever.”
“My whatever?”
The soft kiss he’d placed on my lips had me leaning in for more. “Whatever you need me to be,” he whispered against my mouth.”

Josh is truly the best. He’s so great for Ember. But Josh has a secret he’s keeping. It’s one he knows could destroy everything between them…

I loved Josh and Ember’s story. There were times I was a little stressed about what was going on between them, and a little frustrated with Ember- but seeing all she’d been through I understood her. I completely adored Josh though. He was fantastic. When you start this book, make sure you have a few tissues handy. The first few chapters had me in tears. It’s an emotional read, but it’s also sweet, sexy and has moments that will put a smile on your face! I can’t wait to read more of these books. Especially Jagger’s story!

2. JENNIFER KYLE reviews for Full Measures

This was a really well-done debut novel. The writing was strong and although some of the plot was predictable, I enjoyed the story.

This story brings heartbreak from the first chapter. Our main character, December, struggles to hold her family together in the aftermath. December’s strength to carry her family emotionally while losing so much herself was very inspiring.

December’s high school crush enters the picture and he was a butterfly-inducing hottie.

”I’ve already got my trophy!” he called back with a heart-stopping grin. He lifted me by hips, holding me above his head. “I’d better put you back in that glass case,” he teased.”

My only complaint is that there should have been MORE scenes for Josh and December as a couple.

December’s fears/choices although explained drove me crazy. To be honest I hate when my characters finally get together only to be torn apart as I wait for said character to ‘get it’.

” I will love you the rest of my life, December Howard, whether or not you’re around to witness it.”

The underlying military theme of the story along with Josh Walker and Gus carried it for me.

Even though I saw the ending coming a mile away, I loved the feeling that I was left with for the book as a whole.

”There’s nothing better than us.”

P.S. Wondering if Jagger is getting a book?

3. DEANNA LYNN reviews for Full Measures

“Full Measures” This book gutted me. Absolutely loved it!

First Impression: Excellent and Heart-wrenching

I’m a sucker for angst. I freely admit it. If an author can make me care about the characters and put them through the emotional ringer throughout the book’s pages, chances are it’s a book I’ll fall in love with in a real and major way. Full Measures is just such a book.

From the start, my heart went out to Ember Howard. Her entire world changes in a blink, but instead of being allowed to fall apart and grieve the way she needs, she finds herself becoming the rock that holds things together for her mom and her family. It’s not an easy job, but someone has to do it and the fact that she had enough internal strength to step up to the plate made me love her character so much more than I might have otherwise.

Yes, I would’ve felt and understood where Ember was coming from the other way, too, if she fell apart and got to truly grieve, but the strength she showed in standing up and staying strong made her a young woman worthy of so much admiration and respect. It just made me love her and want to root for her that much more. She’s a truly dynamic character and because she’s so easy to like and relate to, I knew her hero would have to be a man as strong and brave as she is, maybe even more so. Lucky for both of us, Josh Walker stepped up to the plate.

Josh is the kind of man any woman would love to meet. Sure, he’s popular with women and has a reputation to prove it, but he’s so much more than that, too. He’s the kind of guy that would drop everything to be where he was needed, doing whatever needed to be done. He’s loyal, passionate, hardworking, and steadfast, much more so than others give him credit for. And thankfully, it’s easy for Ember to see that in him, just as it’s easy for her to fear it, too.

Ember and Josh find each other at the worst possible time in Ember’s life. She’s got so much on her plate, she’s not ready for a relationship with a guy like Josh. But she needs it. She needs him, and despite how hard she tries to fight her growing feelings for him, she finds herself drawn to him more and more as the story progresses.

This is such a fantastic tale of heartbreak and hope. It brought me to tears more than once with its beautiful passages and life and character insights. This book is a journey, and its one I am completely prepared to go on again and again. I absolutely loved it.

4. CVZ reviews for Full Measures

The Last Full Measure Of Devotion And The Life That Follows

Once again Ms. Yarros crafts an emotional, thought-provoking, and heart wrenching story cemented in military life, the honor, the sacrifices, and its impact on family. The story unfolds with the arrival of the soldiers at the family home to announce the devastating news that the husband and father of three had been killed while serving as a physician in Afghanistan.

Dr. Howard’s widow, June, becomes virtually catatonic, the teenage daughter, April, becomes belligerent and makes many poor life choices, the youngest, Gus, has hockey to keep him grounded, and December (Ember), the oldest, temporarily becomes “mom” to the household.

The story’s main focus is on the developing relationship between Josh Walker, Gus’s hockey coach and player and Ember. The relationship is plagued with so much difficulty and drama. Ember is adamant that she will never get involved with a military man because the pain is too great. I felt for Josh, his selflessness, and loving and understanding disposition..He was one patient man dealing with Ember’s indecisiveness. This is definitely a story of young love, college life, and coming into your own in your early twenties. I generally prefer stories with characters a little more mature, at least in their thirties, but nonetheless it was still well written. I loved Ember’s adventurous friend, Sam, and Josh’s friend, Jagger. As with other stories I’ve read by Ms. Yarros, it is the last quarter of the books that the truly compelling storyline takes shape. For me, those are the most memorable portions of her books. This one is no exception. It always tugs at the heart strings! I can’t wait to delve into the second installment in this series. In conclusion, Ms. Yarros, does a stellar job giving readers a very realistic glimpse into life of a military family, the love of a military spouse, and the sacrifices it entails. She spares readers no mercy in the process, which, in my opinion, is what precipitates such raw emotions.

5. ANA IONITA reviews for Full Measures

I chose this book because until now everything I read by Rebecca Yarros I loved and I wanted to see some of her previous work.

The change from fantasy to romance was interesting, but I can hardly believe is one and the same author. While the book is written in the same flawless style, doesn’t have the same charisma and dynamic as some of her later work.

I will definitely read the second volume of the series as I am invested and even if not the most thrilling book ever, it is still a great read that I enjoyed immensely.

6. VAL reviews for Full Measures

This was just awesome. The author really depicted grief in a realistic yet touching way that hit close to home.

Ember was a great character and of course Josh was to die for. Very well written, with a lot of depth, I loved every minute of it.

If you are looking for a sweet (sometimes heart wrenchingly sad) story with great characters, this one’s for you.

7. CATARINA reviews for Full Measures

4,5 Angsty and Beautiful Stars.

Ember is going through the worst time of her life and in top of that, she has also to step up as the leader of the family. She is broken, feeling alone and sees nothing but darkness in her life.

But suddenly, her old high-school crush is back and seems to be everywhere. Josh is her younger brother coach, he’s her neighbor and classmate. He’s everywhere and not by chance. He wants her. She wants him.

She is too broken to be in love in someone. He understands that and waits for her.

Except that she isn’t the only one with ghosts. He has them either, but when December finds out about them, will she stick around dealing with the same ghost that destroyed her life the first time?

I confess, the first reason why I’ve decided to read this book was the guy’s face. I mean, look at it. The dude is gorgeous.

But well, I’m glad I did it. This is a great debut novel, one of best NA books I’ve read in a while and I’m really hoping that it will turn out into a series because I really, really want more from December and Josh. Especially Josh.

Give it a try.

8. KELLI C reviews for Full Measures

FABULOUS!!!! I loved this…the angst, the passion, the love story! Total unexpected love fest going on right now with me and this author!!!!

December Howard has lived a life as a military brat. She has a fabulous family, a perfect boyfriend, and a seemingly stepford planned future.

Everything changes with three knocks on her door. When news of her father’s death in Afghanistan hits the Howard family, devastation and loss ensue. Someone must standup, be strong, and carry on this family…only Ember is capable.

Losing her father, losing her philandering boyfriend, watching her catatonic mother, and chasing her out of control sister is wearing on Ember. She is working to re-establish her life and come to grips with what the future holds.

Josh Howard…SWOON…This local college boy, one time hockey bad boy womanizer, now youth hockey coach seems to be everywhere when she needs someone to pick her up…Josh Walker has become Ember’s “whatever.”

This man is patient, clever, witty, caring, and ridiculously supportive. His only flaw is literally “hidden in the closet,” and it is a truth that when Ember discovers will truly rip her out of his life.

This read is heart-wrenching and I shed tears on multiple occasions. The sense of loss in this read is so palpable and so emotionally charged. This accompanied with the developing love story was quite an emotional roller coaster. I loved the connection between Josh and Ember and I loved how they developed slowly. There was so much intensity yet it was so appropriately written with the perfect amount of desire, compassion, and respect. Josh Howard is a top notch book boyfriend all around.

If Josh Howard would have given me the “I have never said I love you to a girl” speech and told me “we are worth the fight,” I do not think I would have been able to say goodbye ever!!!

This author wrote a truly good book with great likeable characters and a riveting journey. I appreciated the well-developed story and quality in which it was written. I mostly appreciated a real conclusion and no cliffhanger. In the end of this read I am a true believer in the concept of happy ever after and that true love can conquer all!!!

9. CLAIRE reviews for Full Measures

4.5 Spectacular Debut Stars!

I am learning pretty quickly that when it comes to Entangled book, I am never going to be disappointed. Full Measures is no exception, I was expecting a pretty emotional read about a young woman coming to terms with the loss of her father, and what I got was a well written, funny, sad, sexy and fully engrossing story.

December (Ember) is a really likeable character; she has been left in a difficult situation and ends up being the anchor for the rest of her family while they come to terms with their loss. I loved Gus her younger brother, although April her teenage sister was an absolute nightmare (as younger sisters often are)!

Josh Walker is known for two things – his reputation with the ladies and the fact that his is a stellar Ice Hockey player. He is also the guy that Ember has had a secret crush on for most of her life, he wants to be her “whatever” as she works her way through her grief, and the loss of several other aspects of her life, as well as the monumental struggles with her family.

*Swoon* tattooed, ripped, a little bit mysterious and with a few secrets of his own, Josh has all the attributes that make the perfect Book Boyfriend. Let’s not forget the guy also has a talent with his mouth *fans-self furiously* and the words that come out of it, and isn’t afraid to use both to get what he wants –

“We’re taking it slow until you say so, because I can’t bear to hear a ‘no’ from you. But here’s your only warning: I’m going to chase the fuck out of you.”

Full Measures, is a book that made me laugh and cry in equal measure, sometimes it is a little predictable, others I felt like I had been blindsided. But put it all together and you have an absolutely stunning, wholly absorbing story. It was so much more than I was expecting, Rebecca Yarros has a massive talent if this debut is anything to go by, and I cannot wait to see what she offers us next.

ARC provided through Netgalley, it was my absolute pleasure to provide the above honest review.

10. BELLE reviews for Full Measures

I want to preface this by saying, all those other books in my ‘sob-fest’ shelf—they don’t hold a candle to this. A book that usually pulls a tear from my cold, stone heart finds its way into that shelf. But this had me full-blown ugly crying too many times to count. I think I might of even cried through the entire book, if I wasn’t crying from second hand grief, I was crying because I was happy.

This follows the daughter (and the family) of a military doctor who is killed during one of his many tours in Afghanistan. It’s about the different way people deal with grief and how lives are affected.

Ember was such a beautiful main character and I undoubtedly loved seeing her perspective. She was a strong female character that pulled her falling apart family from the brink of destruction throughout the story, putting her wants and needs on the back burner. The only person who truely sees Ember is Josh and the development his character goes through is mind boggling.

It was beautiful and heartbreaking but it ultimately pieces your heart back together as you watch the characters pick themselves back up again. The romance in this novel, I CAN’T! I think this romance story would easily be in my top five, it was raw and strong.

III. Full Measures Quotes

Full Measures Quotes by Rebecca Yarros

The best book quotes from Full Measures by Rebecca Yarros

“The fire you have within you is impossible to kill. The first breath you take when you’re free of all this, it will come roaring back. That’s what is so impossibly beautiful about you.”

“Just let me love you, December, because I can’t stop anyways. I’ve been at your mercy since I was eighteen.”

“…grief had no mercy, time limit, or expiration date.”

“How can we love each other this much and not make it? Why does a love like ours hurt us both so badly?”

“Even if we didn’t have you, the years I was able to spend with him are well worth the price of this pain. These moments, these are the ones you cling to, because it may hurt to send him away, but nothing compares to having him back. It makes you more thankful for what you have, more aware of just how precious it is”

“I’m your whatever.”
“My whatever?”
The soft kiss he’d placed on my lips had me leaning in for more. “Whatever you need me to be,” he whispered against my mouth.”

“Please fight for this, Ember. We are worth the fight. I love you, and that’s something I’ve never said to any girl. I love you more than hockey, or the air I breathe. You love me, too!”

“Just in the wrong place at the wrong time, baby. But I guess it led me to you, so it’s more like the right place at the right time.”

“We’re taking it slow until you say so, because I can’t bear to hear a ‘no’ from you. But here’s your only warning: I’m going to chase the fuck out of you.”

“Don’t you get it? You don’t have to beg me for anything. I’m already yours.”

“He tasted like sin and
heaven, all in one man.”

“Don’t look at me like that and tell me no. That’s not fair.”

“You still love me.”
“Every fucking second I breathe. I will love you the rest of my life, December Howard, whether or not you’re around to witness it.”

“Yeah, you know, like pick you up, we go out, have a good time, I steal a good night kiss?” He leaned back across the table and whispered, “I get to tell people you’re mine?”

“For fuck’s sake, December! You’re carrying everyone in that damn house! Someone has to carry you. I can’t just watch you suffer and do nothing.”

“You’re so fucking mine.”

“And you’re December-freaking-Howard, and you happen to be the only girl I’m interested in. I’m not Riley! When I make a choice, that’s it. I don’t back down. I didn’t get where I am in hockey or school by backing down, and I choose you.”

“Maybe love this exquisite, this powerful isn’t meant to last forever. Maybe we’re meant to burn so brightly for each other right now to light whatever path we’re heading down, but there’s no sustaining a fire like this.”

“Grief, by its very nature, is designed to suck the life out of us because we are so willing to join our dead. It’s supposed to be this hard to figure out to do next, but it’s that ‘next’ that makes us the living, and not our dead.”

“So you’re saying slow? Or no?” He raised his arms and put his hands back against the glass. “Because you’re killing me here.”

“When I make a choice, that’s it. I don’t back down. I didn’t get where I am in hockey or school by backing down, and I choose you.”
“I’m nowhere near ready to be anyone’s choice.” Not ready to risk my heart.
His eyes narrowed, but he let my jab slip. “One day you will be, and I’ll still be here, no matter how hard you push me away.”

“That was the moment I fell in love with Josh Walker. Everything clicked into place, mending the broken parts of my soul enough to finally breathe freely, to soak in everything about him, and the beauty of what we were together.”

“There’s no one on this earth who can love you as well as I can, and I wish it was enough.”

“I want this; I want you, Ember. But tonight is about you, not us. You needed this, and I’m fucking ecstatic to give it to you, but we’re not doing this.” He pushed his hips against my ass, and I groaned, wanting him inside me. “Until it’s about us, and no one else.”

“You’re so busy taking care of everyone else, you can’t see that someone needs to take care of you. So tell me what you need, and I’ll be that for you.”

“Kissing him was so fucking addictive. He changed pace, sped it up, mellowed it out, but kept me wondering what he was doing next. He gave me control and then took it back. Josh robbed me of every logical thought in my head except the quickest way to get him out of those clothes. I wanted to see where the lines in his abs headed. My hands slid down his chest, tracing along his stomach until I reached his pants. I skimmed under the elastic, needing to get my hands on him, to feel that soft skin under my fingertips.”

“Snap already, Josh. I’m on fire for you. I don’t need you to go slowly; I need to know what you feel like inside me.”

“I hope you sleep better than I do.” The change in topics threw me. “You’re not sleeping?” He slowly shook his head. “Knowing my bedroom backs up to yours, that you’re only a wall away, lying in bed, makes that pretty fucking impossible.” Every muscle in my body loosened, tingles of energy rushing through me. Could a girl orgasm from words? A charged silence passed between us. “’Night.”

“get home. I have a life, too, you know.” I nearly dropped my cup. She couldn’t leave. The house wouldn’t function. Mom wasn’t”

“I should have given you the choice and told you, but I couldn’t. You are this miracle, something I never thought I was worthy of touching, let alone calling you mine. I’ve wanted you since I was eighteen, but I was never good enough, not for someone like you.”

The Handmaid's Tale Quotes by Margaret Atwood

The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood

The Handmaid’s Tale is a novel of such power that the reader will be unable to forget its images and its forecast. Set in the near future, it describes life in what was once the United States and is now called the Republic of Gilead, a monotheocracy that has reacted to social unrest and a sharply declining birthrate by reverting to, and going beyond, the repressive intolerance of the original Puritans. The regime takes the Book of Genesis absolutely at its word, with bizarre consequences for the women and men in its population.
