I. Book introduction
Told in alternating timelines, THE THINGS WE LEAVE UNFINISHED examines the risks we take for love, the scars too deep to heal, and the endings we can’t bring ourselves to see coming.
Twenty-eight-year-old Georgia Stanton has to start over after she gave up almost everything in a brutal divorce―the New York house, the friends, and her pride. Now back home at her late great-grandmother’s estate in Colorado, she finds herself face-to-face with Noah Harrison, the bestselling author of a million books where the cover is always people nearly kissing. He’s just as arrogant in person as in interviews, and she’ll be damned if the good-looking writer of love stories thinks he’s the one to finish her grandmother’s final novel…even if the publisher swears he’s the perfect fit.
Noah is at the pinnacle of his career. With book and movie deals galore, there isn’t much the “golden boy” of modern fiction hasn’t accomplished. But he can’t walk away from what might be the best book of the century―the one his idol, Scarlett Stanton, left unfinished. Coming up with a fitting ending for the legendary author is one thing, but dealing with her beautiful, stubborn, cynical great-granddaughter, Georgia, is quite another.
But as they read Scarlett’s words in both the manuscript and her box of letters, they start to realize why Scarlett never finished the book―it’s based on her real-life romance with a World War II pilot, and the ending isn’t a happy one. Georgia knows all too well that love never works out, and while the chemistry and connection between her and Noah is undeniable, she’s as determined as ever to learn from her great-grandmother’s mistakes―even if it means destroying Noah’s career.

1. LULU reviews for The Things We Leave Unfinished
this book is a literary masterpiece and no one can tell me otherwise.
this love story will always live in my heart. i simply don’t know how i lived without them before.
“I love you so much that my heart feels like it beats within your body.”
oh my god the love. the love between scarlett and jameson is one i will never forget. it took place in the past during world war II, and their love was so heart wrenching. i ached for them. i cried so much. every letter means so much to me. i will cherish those letters forever. every word they exchanged tore me in two. every dance they shared is living in my head and heart for eternity. it found it’s home within me. i felt so much for these characters. the love between them was so palpable.
“It wasn’t that I was living for him, but that he simply made me want to live.”
there was a second love story going on in the present involving scarlett’s great granddaughter, georgia. the love between georgia and noah was truly healing. it was a beautiful story to read. noah understood her and what she needed before she even knew herself. he was so thoughtful and patient with her.
but one thing that was noteworthy was my investment in the two relationships. from the very first chapter, i found myself engrossed in the relationship between scarlett and jameson, but i didn’t find myself all that invested in georgia and noah. i think a huge reason is because the stakes were much higher with scarlett and jameson. they had so much riding on their relationship, and you just find yourself rooting for them and hoping for the best. in comparison, the relationship between georgia and noah seems less intense and is sort of overshadowed by scarlett and jameson. i kept wanting to go back to the past and read more about them.
but then, something happened. where it all just clicked. and there was this beauty emanating from georgia and noah.
“The epic, rare love story in this room isn’t Scarlett and Jameson. It’s you and me.”
^ i beg to differ BUT
the book did what it needed to do. it showed me, as it showed georgia, that she was meant to have the love she deserved. that she came from generations of love. and learning everything that came before her made me appreciate the love georgia found so much more.
“You have been my compass all these years, and I’m not sure I’ll be able to find my way without you.”
the bond between scarlett and constance is everything. their sisterhood was a love that was so powerful. the way they were always there for each other, protected each other, and always included one another in their plans. they loved each other so much and just wanted the other to be happy. they were incomplete without each other. two beautiful souls.
“Life is too short to miss the lightning strike and too long to live it alone.”
i knew this book would break me, i just didn’t realize how badly. i cried an insane number of times. there was a melancholic feel throughout the book, and every little thing had me on the verge of tears. i loved every second of it.
2. EMBIBLIOPHILE reviews for The Things We Leave Unfinished
4 stars
“I love you so much that my heart feels like it beats within your body.”
Jameson and Scarlett were everything. I loved their story, their banter, their romance. It was everything. I loved reading their story so much. I found myself rooting for them hoping that they make it.
The sisterhood bond between Scarlett and Constance was amazing! I love family relationships and the way those two sisters were always there for each other? It was both heartbreaking and beautiful. I loved them.
“Dance with me, Scarlett.”
I have to admit that I expected a different ending. I swear I saw it, but when I started to see how it’s gonna turn out? Ugh I was so happy and so sad. It was weird. I was happy for Scarlett because I couldn’t see her with a different ending, but still sad because of everything else.
Noah and Georgia were okay I guess. They actually have a great romance. It’s just that Jameson and Scarlett kind of stole the show for me. They were just so captivating. I found myself more into their story.
3. DORA KOUTSOUKOU reviews for The Things We Leave Unfinished
4 ❤️❤️❤️❤️🌟🌟🌟🌟s❣️
I don’t think there are a lot of readers who would not acknowledge the amazing writing of Rebecca Yarros! It is gripping and emotional!
I was anticipating and had the best intentions for this new release.
There were two completely different, yet beautiful, love stories unraveling in this book.
One in the 40s, where the main couple was Jameson and Scarlett and the other in present time with, Scarlett’s great granddaughter, Georgia and Noah.
I fell in love with Scarlett and Jameson’s love story. Completely!
Georgia and Noah’s story was wonderful, however didn’t manage to captivate me as much as her great grandmother’s.
My main issue was that I felt I was alternately reading two different books in parallel. They were being developed in dissimilar time period, changed by turns throughout the chapters and had naturally a different style, which had my interest divided.
4. CVZ reviews for The Things We Leave Unfinished
I just finished reading and listening to this awesome inspiring story. My heart is SO full of so many feelings right now…. Joy, Peace, Sadness, Contentment and everything else in between. Rebecca Yarros you are a gift to the writing community and the readers your works impact each and every day. It’s a story about fate as it relates to the human experience and most importantly a story about true love in the purest sense. I’m convinced that very few of us go through life ever fortunate enough to experience the relationships depicted in this book. If you have….. you are rich beyond words.
The writing is stellar and the creative storytelling and plot creates an absorbing experience and captivating “movie for the minds eye”! The narration adds to the story amazingly well. The twist to the storyline towards the end of the book is nothing short of jaw dropping and 100% unexpected and unpredictable. Brilliant!!!!
I HIGHLY recommend this read. SO worth it! UNFORGETTABLE to say the least. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
5. MEREDITH MEDINA reviews for The Things We Leave Unfinished
Wow. Just, wow.
So I went into this blind. I knew there was a divorce from the first few words in the synopsis I accidentally read, but that was literally all I knew.
I cannot remember the last time I cried so hard reading a book. It was such a beautiful, though heartbreaking, story. My review will in no way do this book justice, or adequately convey my feelings about it. I can’t seem to gather my thoughts cohesively, so this will be scattered. I have so much to say, but also don’t want to give any spoilers.
These characters stole my heart. Both men are truly swoon-worthy. While Noah’s previous “bachelor” ways are briefly (and more vaguely) mentioned, both men are gentlemen. The women show strength and intelligence. But all have moments of vulnerability.
This was my first Rebecca Yarros book, so maybe it’s how she typically writes, but, I loved the way the spicy scenes weren’t overtly explicit. They were still somehow very passionate.
There was a point in the book that I wasn’t loving the flashbacks, or rather the placement of them. They happen at such inopportune times. Just when I’m catching my stride and getting into the story, we go back in time. And the same happens in the past timeline. I get into it, and we jump into present again. I understand the reason for it stylistically, but it was still frustrating. That said, I realized about halfway through the reason it felt this way is because I loved all the characters so much. It wasn’t like one of those multi-POV books where I didn’t like this person and couldn’t wait to get back to someone else. I just genuinely was so invested in them all, in all the stories, that it was hard to break away once immersed.
The way the puzzle pieces come together kind of blew me away. In hindsight, it all made sense. Really, I enjoyed her writing style immensely.
PAST
At one point, my notes say “Is this a historical Romance?! I think I could love it.”
I love the romance of that era. Her modesty and morals. There’s just such a sweet innocence about it.
While a wartime romance isn’t for the faint of heart, I enjoyed the sense of urgency it created. The unknown of tomorrow. The way it matures a person, living through that.
I found myself wishing I understood more about the politics of the time (though admittedly that could very well be my own ignorance, and not that anything was missing from the book). And more of the particulars of what Scarlett and Constance were doing in the WAAF.
PRESENT
Georgia and Noah’s banter was fun. The care he shows her throughout the book is next level. He sits her down and reverses roles. He makes her tea. He explains how he won’t let her fall if she climbs.
6. NOOR reviews for The Things We Leave Unfinished
What a twist! Fell in love with all the love!
Damn! Rebecca Yarros has done it again! This might be my favorite book by her yet, and yes, that includes the Empyrean Series. This story deserves all the hype it gets!!! Just loved all the love! Kudos to the author for managing to not only write two timelines and two love stories together but also throw in a mind-blowing plot twist that I didn’t see coming! Simply phenomenal!
Scarlett and Jameson have my freaking heart. And I was rooting for Noah and Georgia too. Loved all the characters. They were strong but still human, still flawed and so they were relatable.
This book evoked all kinds of emotions. I felt love, anger, grief, heartache, betrayal… you name it. The pacing was perfect despite the two parallel timeliness. Never felt dragged or too fast to follow either.
I would recommend this book to all romance lovers. It literally has everything you need from a love story. It was poignant but ends with a ‘happily ever after’. 🥰🥹
7. GILLIAN reviews for The Things We Leave Unfinished
“My heart will always remain with you no matter where we are.”
I loved this book so much! This was such a beautiful and heartbreaking love story about love, second chances, grief, and family. The Things We Leave Unfinished follows Georgia as she moves back to Colorado after a recent divorce and runs into Noah Harrison, an author who insists that he would be the best author to finish her grandmother’s final book. They eventually decide to make a deal, Noah has two months to finish the book and Georgia can decide on the ending for the book. Noah starts falling for Georgia, but she puts walls up around her. Will Noah be able to make her fall? This book also follows Scarlett, Georgia’s grandmother and her greatest love Jameson during WWII.
“I will wait for you every second, every hour, everyday for the rest of my life, and if that’s not enough, then eternity, which is exactly how long I’ll love you Jameson. Come back to me, my love.”
I fell in love with the characters and the story from the very beginning. The plot was very engaging and the pacing was great. The writing was so beautiful, it was so relatable and poetic. I felt like I was in the characters head feeling and thinking what they thought. I loved that the author was able to link the two storylines together, it really brought the story together in a beautiful way. I felt so many emotions while reading this book, I cried, I smiled and I laughed.
“I love you so much that my heart feels like it beats within your body.”
The characters were relatable and layered. I love Georgia, she is independent, stubborn, kind, creative, intelligent and resilient. I’m so proud of Georgia for facing difficult challenges, especially her divorce and coming out the other side as an even stronger person. I’m in love with Noah, he is so sweet, smart, very handsome, protective, hardworking and kind. I loved Noah’s bond with his sister and how protective he was to Georgia. I love that when Noah made a mistake he made sure to apologize and explain the situation. I also love Scarlett, she is stubborn, kind, loving, loyal, and compassionate. I’m also in love with Jameson, he is brave, smart, loyal, friendly, very handsome and protective. I also loved Constance and I loved her bond with Scarlett. Scarlett and Jameson’s relationship and their love for each was so beautiful. I loved that they understood each other, and would do anything for each other. Scarlett’s and Jameson’s chemistry was amazing. I also loved Noah and Georgia’s relationship, they were able to stay true to themselves, but also be there for each other.
“But what I do have is yours, Scarlett. My heart, my name, my very being – it’s all yours.”
The ending was so beautiful and heartbreaking. This story will stay in my heart for a long time.
I recommend this book to anyone who loves romance, slow-burn, amazing characters and beautiful writing.
8. TIA reviews for The Things We Leave Unfinished
Picked back up 7/21! It took me about 2 months to finish this (granted I had to wait for my Libby hold to come back) but I did end up appreciating this book. When I said 6/7 that I thought I knew what was going to happen… Fool! I DID NOT see that plot twist coming, and it makes the story so much more heartbreaking. I think Georgia and Noah need to communicate with each other better, as I felt frustrated as a reader seeing them act the way they do as grown ups. But through the writing, you can see how much they love each other and their motivations behind the questionable actions. The love story of Scarlett and James was honestly so beautiful and heart wrenching, their story (VS the present-day timeline) was definitely the highlight of this novel.
6/7/23: ehhh dnf@41%, I’m simply bored. The writing isn’t bad but I just feel like I already know exactly what’s going to happen in both timelines! Maybe I will pick this up again one day
9. TRACEY reviews for The Things We Leave Unfinished
Wow! This is an entertaining, well-written, dual timeline, historical fiction, steamy romance novel. It has creative and likable female protagonists, kind and caring male protagonists, two heartwarming romances, heartbreak, family drama, and a gratifying conclusion. I listened to the audio version of this novel, and the narrators, Tim Paige and Carly Robins, are truly talented, have captivating voices, and do an outstanding job depicting the characters and their personalities. I enjoyed this story so much that it was extremely difficult to stop listening to it every evening, and I looked forward to listening to it every day!
10. NILGUEN reviews for The Things We Leave Unfinished
I picked this book for the author! Rebecca Yarros is currently a celebrated author for her hyped book „Fourth Wing“ that I’m about to read this week.
I wanted to know what it’s all about this author. Now I understand.
“The Things We Leave Unfinished” is a slow-burn that got me weeping over the fates of Scarlet & Jameson and their family.
A multi-layered, complex plot with flawed characters that tells the story of love & friendship on one hand, and greed & betrayal on the other hand.
The narrative is flawless.
I tremendously look forward to reading next “Fourth Wing” by Rebecca Yarros.
Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Easy 5 stars.
III. The Things We Leave Unfinished Quotes
The best book quotes from The Things We Leave Unfinished by Rebecca Yarros
“Tragedy has a way of breaking gentle things and soldering the shattered pieces together in ways we can’t control. Some, it remakes into stronger, more resilient creatures. In others, the pieces fuse before they heal, leaving only razor-sharp edges. I can offer you no other explanation or excuse for the way she’s cut you over the years.”
“Life is too short to miss the lightning strike and too long to live it alone.”
“Sometimes the only way to keep what you need is to let go of what you want.”
“Sometimes I wonder if I just enjoy the beginnings, and that’s why I never seem to move past them. The beginnings are what make everything romantic.”
“This is not our end. My heart will always remain with you no matter where we are. Time and distance are only inconveniences to a love like ours. Whether it’s days, months, or even years, I will be waiting. WE will be waiting.”
“Perhaps the kindest thing I could do for the characters would be to leave their stories unfinished. Leave them with their possibilities, their potential, even if they only exist in my own mind.”
“Our fates are intertwined, for I cannot exist in a world where you do not.”
“You are the culmination of every lightning strike and twist of fate.”
“There’s a warning, a sound your heart makes the first time it realizes it’s no longer safe with the person you trusted.”
“Personally, I think she liked living there, between the pages with him. Always adding little bits of memory but never closing the door.”
“I see the way he looks at her, like she’s the reason the seasons change and the sun rises until they’re a hundred and one years old.”
“Without the potential for disaster, would we ever really know what we have?”
“My heart will always remain with you no matter where we are.”
“maybe it’s really the possibilities that are easy to fall in love with. Looking at any situation, any relationship, any story, and having the sublime ability to wonder where it will take us is a bit intoxicating, really.”
“Romance isn’t about unrealistic expectations and sex. It’s about love and overcoming adversity through what can be considered a universal experience.”
“when a story is finished, no matter what kind it is, the possibilities are gone. It is what it is, or it was whatever it was.”
“I love you, Scarlett, and it’s not the kind of love that fades with distance or time. I’m yours and have been since the first time I looked into your eyes. I’ll be yours no matter how much time passes before I see your eyes again. Always.”
“I will wait for you every second, every hour, every day for the rest of my life, and if that’s not enough, then eternity, which is exactly how long I’ll love you,”
“I love you more than all the stars in the sky,”
“You fight and you thrash because this fated, deep-rooted thing you called love refuses to go down with a single shot. That would be far too merciful. Real love has to be choked out, held under the water until it stops kicking. That’s the only way to kill it.”
“Grief is a powerful, illogical emotion, and some memories are safer left boarded up and undisturbed.”
“We need more Darcys in the world,” I answered with a little shrug. “Says the woman with a thing for Hemingway.”
“I wish I could keep you safe as well. Our lives have turned out so very differently than we planned. I wish you were with me, that we had taken this journey together. You have been my compass all these years, and I’m not sure I’ll be able to find my way without you, but as I promised this morning as we said our goodbyes, I will do my best. I carry you with me in my heart, always.”
“You are the culmination of every lightning strike and twist of fate. Do not settle for the love that hones your edges and turns you bitter and cold, Georgia. Not when there are so many other kinds of love waiting for you. And don’t wait like I did, wasting 17 years, because I’d left one bitter foot in my past. We’re all entitled to our mistakes. When you recognize them for what they are, don’t live there. Life is too short to miss the lightning strike, and too long to live it alone.”
“We’re all entitled to our mistakes. When you recognize them for what they are, don’t live there. Life is too short to miss the lightning strike and too long to live it alone.”
“You’re the very breath in my lungs and the beat of my heart.”
“Real love has to be choked out, held under the water until it stops kicking.”
“Do not settle for the love that hones your edges and turns you brittle and cold,”
“But what I do have is yours, Scarlett. My heart, my name, my very being—it’s all yours. And I promise I will spend every day of my life earning the privilege of your love if you let me.”
“Tragedy has a way of breaking gentle things and soldering the shattered pieces together in ways we can’t control. Some, it remakes into stronger, more resilient creatures. In others, the pieces fuse before they heal, leaving only razor-sharp edges.”
“our brains are biologically programmed to remember painful memories better?”
“I felt my heart break into a million pieces as I watched you leave, and yet every tiny shard of that broken heart still loves you.”
“I’m not sure I’ll ever have a heart to give. Seems safer to read about love in novels than it is to honestly experience it.”
