I. Book introduction
Too Late is a romance/psychological thriller by Colleen Hoover. Narrated in first person through various points of view, it tells the story of Sloan, Luke (whose undercover name is Carter), and their entanglements with the abusive drug dealer Asa Jackson. Hoover uses their story to explore themes of Love as a Source of Courage, Surviving Abusive Relationships, and Self-Worth and Empowerment.
The instant #1 New York Times and USA Today bestseller, a story about a woman caught in a dangerous web of obsessive love, trying to find a way out before it’s too late… this new, updated edition is a “barn-burner” (New York Post) and Colleen Hoover’s darkest romantic thriller since Verity.
Sloan will go through hell and back for those she loves. And she does so, every single day. Caught up with the alluring Asa Jackson, a notorious drug trafficker, Sloan has finally found a lifeline to cling to, even if it’s meant compromising her morals. She was in dire straits trying to pay for her brother’s care until she met Asa. But as Sloan became emotionally and economically reliant on him, he in turn developed a disturbing obsession with her—one that becomes increasingly dangerous every day.
When undercover DEA agent Carter enters the picture, Sloan’s surprised to feel an immediate attraction between them, despite knowing that if Asa finds out, he will kill him. And Asa has always been a step ahead of everyone in his life, including Sloan. No one has ever gotten in his way.
No one except Carter.
Together, Sloan and Carter must find a way out before it’s too late…

1. KIMI reviews for Too Late
Non Spoilery section:
Hello non spoilery person! Why on earth haven’t you read this book yet? What are you waiting for?!
On second thought, there miiiiiiiight be a few reasons why you don’t want to read this book and by a few I mean a lot. You see this book has a trigger warning for basically everything you can possibly think of.
Here’s a list of all the trigger warnings:
-Abuse.
-Rape.
-Cheating.
-Drugs.
Also, the sexual scenes in this book are much more graphic than any other CoHo book.
If you somehow made it through all the previous warnings then congratualtions, you’re good to go my friend. This book is a slap to the feels (just like most of CoHo’s books) but it is absolutely AMAZING! So basically …
Now go read the book and come back to discuss it with me when you’re done.
Spoilery section:
* sighs deeply * Where do I even start?
➨ Let’s talk about Asa: What a great character! I mean he’s a shitty person but I absolutely loved him as a villain. He definitely has a few loose screws in the brain but when it comes to evil plans, the dude knows what he’s doing!
➨Sloan: I had a love/hate relationship with Sloan’s character. She has been through a lot and I know she is a strong female character in her own way but man, there were a few scenes I wanted to shake the life out of her! For example that scene when Asa found her house and raped her in her own bed. I wanted her to fight back for once! I know, I know, she would probably be dead if she had but man, that was so cringy to read about Ughhh *shudders* A quick kick to the balls would have been nice, Sloan.
➨Carter AKA Luke AKA The worst cop in the history of cops: Luke should definitely go find himself a new job. I’m not even sure why he hasn’t been fired yet but this guy says the cutest things and you can’t help but fall for him.
➨The Fake FBI situation: As mentioned above. Luke is the worst cop in the universe. I saw Asa’s plan coming from a mile away! How can a real cop not know when he has a fake cop in front of him? WTH Luke?
➨The car crash situation: CoHo has done it again! I might be wrong but I think CoHo likes to put a car crash scene in most (if not all) of her books. I LOVE THAT! I was actually waiting for it to happen and boy oh boy it did not disappoint. Our favorite cop managed to get in a car crash, break some bones, hit his head, run to his house and kill Asa in a matter of five minutes. This guy must be high on pewter or something (oops wrong book.)
➨The baby situation: It’s gonna eat me up for the rest of my life. I have to know if it’s Asa’s baby or Luke’s! I think I might message Colleen begging her to reveal the secret to me. It’s obviously more likely to be Asa’s but if that’s the case, will the baby be a crazy psycho like his dad and grandad?!!! I hope for everyone’s sake that it’s Luke’s. I NEED ANSWERS!
Overall, this story was so entertaining. I found myself talking and yelling at the book a few times which is always a good sign … well, probably not always but in this case it was.
I can’t wait for Colleen to release more books. #CoHoTrash
Thanks for reading. Please share your thoughts!
2. BEL RODRIGUES reviews for Too Late
3. MATT reviews for Too Late
sick and twisted and hard to swallow…. and I loved every moment.
this book is very confronting. I can do almost anything – and when I saw the trigger warning at the start I rolled my eyes thinking “it’s Colleen Hoover… it can’t be that triggering”
WOAH was I wrong lmao. This was so full on, yet so captivating. Some parts were making me very uncomfortable, but it’s not getting less stars for that.
The story is captivating, the writing style is fine, the pacing is great, but even with how thrilling it all was, it was very very basic writing. Almost no descriptive language (which might be CoHo’s thing, I’m not sure). In a way it’s good cause my brain can imagine any scenario, but sometimes it’s nice to have a picture painted for you or to let your imagination run wild.
I LOVE that everything was going a million miles a minute right up until the very end – the worst part about a book is when the ending happens but then there’s 4 chapters of ~tying up loose ends~ and explaining how happy everything has become. None of that here, a very short epilogue.
So many jaw-dropping moments throughout, some were predictable but still exciting to see happen. some I had NO inkling they were even on the horizon. I binged this book and couldn’t stop. LOVE LOVE LOVE.
Updated to add: although I said the writing was basic, the fact that it was written from 3 different perspectives as the story was moving along was SO GOOD!!!! It might be my favourite way to read a book, it makes it SO much more interesting! Does that type of writing have a name? If so, I need more books like that.
4. THERESA ALAN reviews for Too Late
I was immediately sucked into this gripping story. It’s told from the point of view of three people.
Sloan is trying to get away from Asa, but it’s because of his money that her brother is able to get the care he needs. As soon as she finishes college and can earn enough money to take care of her brother and herself, she’ll escape this dangerous man.
Asa is terrifying. He’s a drug dealer, but that’s the least of his crimes. He thinks Sloan really loves him and his constant control over her is how he loves her.
Carter wants to save the day, but it’s too dangerous, at least right now.
There are parts of this novel that are hard to read because of the abuse, but it’s quite a page-turner. At about the 2/3rds mark was an epilogue, which confused me since there was so much left of the book. It turns out the last third bounces around in time and is just as tense as the first part. Recommend.
5. ROBERT ROSS reviews for Too Late
Too late is another powerful psychological thriller novel novel by Colleen Hoover author of Verity! I liked the character Developement and I am glad Asa died at the hands of Luke in the end as there was no fixing him. I was a little surprised that besides Luke and Sloan no one came to the funeral and glad the babies actual paternity was not revealed. This noble Keeps you wanting more , it became hard to put down overtime . Not a lot of slow moments .
6. MOMMALAYNE reviews for Too Late
**”Too Late”** by Colleen Hoover is a gripping and intense romantic thriller that delves into the dark depths of obsession and the lengths one woman will go to for love and survival. The story centers around Sloan, a fiercely devoted sister who finds herself ensnared in a dangerous relationship with Asa Jackson, a notorious drug trafficker. As Sloan compromises her morals to secure financial stability for her brother’s care, she becomes entangled in a web of Asa’s growing obsession, which threatens not only her safety but also her very life.
When Carter, an undercover DEA agent, enters the picture, Sloan is caught in a perilous emotional tug-of-war. Despite her predicament, she feels an undeniable chemistry with Carter, knowing full well that Asa will stop at nothing to protect his territory—and that includes eliminating any threats to his hold on Sloan. Hoover skillfully weaves a tale of desperation, desire, and the fight for freedom, as Sloan and Carter navigate a perilous path that could lead to their undoing. “Too Late” is a heart-pounding narrative that combines Hoover’s signature emotional depth with a thrilling plot, making it a must-read for fans of dark romance and suspenseful storytelling.
7. KELLY reviews for Too Late
I loved this story 💛
Too Late was highly recommended but I have sat on this book for too long. Finally I was able to sit and read it, and I loved it. I found it dragged in points but Asa’s as a character was written beautifully. This man was deranged, over the top crazy, and I felt Colleen wrote him perfectly. He is unhinged at times, as there were mental issues at play here, but as well as he was written, he was definitely despicable as a person. Now Sloan, I felt so bad for her and the hand she was dealt. She has a lot on her plate and Asa, being the narcissist that he is, picked up that and manipulated her in every way for years.
I loved this story. Yes, it was darker than what Colleen Hoover typically writes, but it was not dark in my opinion. The characters were well written and as a reader I love to feel like I know the characters and Colleen did this beautifully. 💛
8. A reviews for Too Late
From chapter one it was noticeable that Too Late is very different to Colleen Hoover’s usual style and a bit darker. There are many difficult themes and parts that were hard for me to read (or listen, audiobook wooo!).
WARNING: sexual assault; physical abuse; violence; rape and a whole array of horrors.
Sloan is stuck in a relationship with a guy named Asa Jackson. He has her in a position where she depends on him for her brothers well being. And though in the beginning of their relationship Sloan did love him, that was before she found out about Asa’s drug ‘business’ and before his violent nature made an appearance. Asa’s toxic love for Sloan meant that he would never let her go.
Carter is an undercover cop sent to pose as a student at the college Sloan and Asa attend. And his job is to bring down Asa’s drug operation. What he didn’t expect, was to fall for Asa’s girl.
(I feel like I know this plot from somewhere but I can’t remember. Like from a movie or something)
The chemistry between Sloan and Carter was so good! And the forbidden factor really added to the appeal. I like that Carter refused to use Sloan for information when he could have and that that wasn’t the reason he got closer to her.
Asa on the other hand is one fucked up individual. Hoover is so freaking amazing at writing such convincing villains! He is crazy, delusional, sick but also fucking brilliant. One thing I can say about Asa is that he is not stupid. This guy was as cunning as a fox and it made for the most shocking plot twists.
Asa’s past is explained. And it broke my heart but not enough for me to forgive the terrible things he did.
You can sympathize with someone and still wish they were dead.
Sloan’s strength was really admirable. During everything ass, whoops I mean Asa, did and the sacrifices she endured. I cannot even imagine.
So yes this book was darker than. CoHo’s usual stuff (though perhaps not Verity ), I thought it was so well written and gripping.
I recommend the audiobook.
9. ANDIE reviews for Too Late
Loved this much darker side of Colleen’s writing style! These characters and their story is definitely not something I could ever forget. The best part? It’s FREE on Wattpad!
10. JEN reviews for Too Late
First, I have to say that I loved reading this book for FREE on WattPad. When I found out about this book I dropped everything and immediately went to the website to start reading. It didn’t matter that the book wasn’t finished at the time and that she was releasing a chapter a day. Once I was caught up reading all of the chapters that were out at that time, waiting for the next chapter to be released added a level of excitement for me. It gave me something to look forward to each day.
Sloan is in college and only has one more year before she graduates. She lives with her boyfriend, Asa, in his house. Asa constantly has parties making it difficult for her to study, much less take a shower without finding someone sleeping in it. The thing is, Asa is a drug dealer. He’s promised Sloane he would quit, but he’s full of empty promises and hands them out quickly if it gets him what he wants.
“He brought me in when I had nowhere else to go. No one else to turn to. For that reason alone, I put up with him. I have no other choice.”
Sloane has had a hard childhood. Basically, she was left to raise her brother. Her brother has Aspergers and is living in a facility that can care for him. When Sloan originally met Asa, he was a nice guy who treated her good, but their relationship didn’t work out so she left him. Then she’s notified that the benefits for her brother will no longer be renewed and she’s going to have to pay if she wants him to stay. Her only option to be able to take care of her brother and finish college is to use Asa. She doesn’t love him, but she can’t see any other solution to her problem. She will do whatever she has to, to make sure her brother is taken care of.
She’s later woken up in Spanish class by a guy named Carter. At first she tries to ignore him, but eventually he gets her to talk to him. Soon, she’s flirting with him. He’s good looking and she doesn’t see any harm since she won’t see him anywhere outside of class. What’s a little innocent flirting.
One of my favorite parts of this book is a game Sloan plays. Basically the game is to write down anything, but you have to try not to think about it. The more nonsense it is, the better. She does this out of habit now and when Carter notices her notes and asks she explains it to him. Eventually this becomes their game. I love how CoHo comes up with things like this. I actually laughed out at this… “Unicorn juice helps me breathe when I listen to disco.”
Sloan is shocked when she later goes home and runs into one of Asa’s new guys, Carter. She can’t believe it. She thought he was a nice guy, but it turns out he’s just like Asa. Or is he??
“Whenever I’m around her, all I can think about is how much more I want to be around her.”
There is chemistry between Sloan and Carter. At first they both try to deny it. But Carter seems to show up and save Sloan from a couple of dangerous situations or is just there to talk to. But they are constantly have to sneak around because if Asa thought for a second that Sloan was cheating on him, he would kill the guy and who knows what to Sloan.
“If I were smarter, I would keep driving and refocus my attention where it needs to be. If I were smarter…”
Sloan likes being with Carter. At least with him she feels safe. She starts to let him in, even though she thinks there is something strange going on here. She can’t put her finger on it, but she feels that she can trust him. I would not consider this a love triangle because she despises Asa. She’s only with him because she needs his money to take care of her brother and Asa cheats on Sloan constantly.
“I want to know what it feels like to be kissed by someone who respects me.”
With Carter it’s real, but he hasn’t told her everything. How will she react once she finds out? How will Asa react when he finds out? Is she worth his life? Or will it be too late?
This book is different than any of CoHo’s books in the past. It was a bit darker for her, but I wouldn’t categorize it as dark by any means. If anything it was more of a suspenseful read. It is told in three POVs and I loved getting all three sides. I loved and hated how CoHo made me feel some compassion for Asa. He was the bad guy in this situation and you never want to feel bad for them, but it was hard not to in this story.
Once again, CoHo writes a riveting tale that will keep you glued to the story until you get to the end. It’s suspenseful. It’s heartbreaking. It’s amazing! I loved it! I would highly recommend this book.
III. Too Late Quotes by Colleen Hoover
The best book quotes from Too Late by Colleen Hoover
“Love finds you in the forgiveness at the tail end of a fight. Love finds you in the empathy you feel for someone else. Love finds you in the embrace that follows a tragedy. Love finds you in the celebration after the conquering of an illness. Love finds you in the devastation after the surrender to an illness.”
“Love shouldn’t feel like added weight. It should make you feel as light as air. Asa made everything in my life heavy. Luke makes me feel like I’m floating. I guess that’s the difference between being loved the right way and the wrong way. You either feel tethered to an anchor…or you feel like you’re flying.”
“and that’s where love finds you… in the tragedies.”
“Love. Love is not found. Love finds”
“I guess that’s the difference in being loved the right way and the wrong way. You either feel tethered to an anchor…or you feel like you’re flying.”
“He hugs me. That’s all he does. He hugs me tightly without a word, yet I can feel everything he’s saying.”
“I’m definitely an introvert, because people drain me. And now I need silence to refuel.”
“Worries flow from her lips like the random words that flow from her fingertips. I reach out and try to catch them, clenching them in my fists, wanting nothing more than to catch them all.”
“You hold a fucking door open for a girl, she automatically thinks you´re a gentlemen. She thinks you´re the type of guy who would treat his mother like a queen. Girls see guys with manners and think there is no way they could be dangerous.
I held every fucking door open for Sloan that I could find.”“He’s not safe. He’s the shark-infested deep end of the sea and if I agree to go out with him, I’d be walking the plank, right off the boat and into his dark depth. How am I supposed to do that when I don’t even know if I can swim?”
“He unclenched his fists and dropped her worries, unable to catch them for her. But she picked them back up and dusted them off. She wants to be able to hold them herself now.”
“Love is not found, love finds.”
“I don’t even know why I’m crying. Maybe it’s because, until this moment, I had no idea what it felt like to be valued. What it felt like to be respected. Until this moment, I had no idea what it felt like to be cared for.”
“You’re all I see, Sloan. Beyond the job, beyond right and wrong. You’re all I see.”
“Asa…” she said. “You had a lot of potential. But you spent every day of your life expecting the world to repay you for a few really shitty years you were dealt as a child. That’s where you went wrong. The world doesn’t owe us a thing. We take what we’re given and we make the most of it. But you took what you were given and you shit on it and then expected more.”
“I squeeze my eyes shut and whisper in her damp hair. “You’re all I see, Sloan. Beyond the job, beyond right and wrong. You’re all I see.”
“The journey from first breath to death has nothing to do with miracles, how much you pray, coincidences, or divine intervention.”
“I don’t even have enough energy left to tell her it’s too late.
I close my eyes for the last time.
But it’s okay, because she’s all I see.
She’s the last thing I’ll ever see.”“Not to mention the fucking schizophrenia shit. Shower with your clothes on, check the lock on a door a few times, and people think you’re losing your fucking mind.”
“I cried because I realized that no matter who he’s become, a part of me is still in love with him…because I don’t know how not to be. I”
“He cared more about the life of a kid he didn’t even know than he did about his own career. And that’s not a flaw, Sloan. That’s a character trait. Pretty sure they call it compassion,”
“Guys can be real fuckers sometimes. I”
“The journey from first breath to death has nothing to do with miracles, how much you pray, coincidences, or divine intervention. Sometimes”
“You see nothing outside the realm of yourself when you’re a sadistic narcissist.”
“It doesn’t matter how the members of my family came to be. What matters is that this is my family. We’re a family.”
“I’m crying too hard to admit it. I’m crying too hard to deny it.”
“Whenever I’m around him, all I can think about is how much more I want to be around him.”
“Brady sits next to me at the lunch table and he brings a lunchbox every day. One time his mom packed him a piece of coconut cake. He doesn’t like coconut cake, so he told me I could have it. It was so good. I went home and told my mom how good it was, but she still hasn’t bought me coconut cake. Sometimes Brady’s mom writes notes and puts them inside of his lunchbox. He reads them all to us and he laughs because he thinks they’re dumb. I never laugh, though. I don’t think the notes are dumb. One time I saw one of the notes he threw in the trash and I picked it up. It said, “Dear Brady. I love you! Have a great day at school!” I tore the top of the note off that had Brady’s name on it and I kept it. I pretended my mother wrote it for me and sometimes I would read it. But that was a long time ago and I lost the note recently. That’s why I wanted to go to school today because if Brady had another note from his mom, I wanted to steal it and pretend it was for me again. I wonder how it would feel to have someone say those words to me. I love you! No one has ever said that to me.”
“My eyes meet his—the fucking motherfucking fuckface brainwashing fuck—and he leans forward, blocking my view of her. He stares at me, hard, like he’s threatening me to turn around. I want to kill him. For a few seconds, I try to think of ways I can do that. Grab the security guard’s gun and shoot him. Run to the back of the courtroom and break his fucking neck. Grab the pen that I just wrote Paul the note with and shove it right in his carotid artery.”
“You’re still here—not because you’re too weak to leave, but because you’re too strong to leave.”
“We both need to leave.
Before it’s too late…”“The world doesn’t owe us a thing. We take what we’re given and we make the most of it.”
