I. Book introduction
There are some debts you can’t repay…
Josh Walker is loyal, reckless, and every girl’s dream. But he only has eyes for December Howard, the girl he has yearned for since his high school hockey days. Together they have survived grief, the military, distance, and time as they’ve fought for stolen weekends between his post at Ft. Rucker and her schooling at Vanderbilt. Now that Josh is a medevac pilot and Ember is headed toward graduation, they’re moving on―and in―together.
Ember never wanted the Army life, but loving Josh means accepting whatever the army dictates―even when that means saying goodbye as Josh heads to Afghanistan, a country that nearly killed him once before and that took her father. But filling their last days together with love, passion, and plans for their future doesn’t temper Ember’s fear, and if there’s one thing she’s learned from her father’s death, it’s that there are some obstacles even love can’t conquer.
Flight school is over.
This is war.
The Flight & Glory series is best enjoyed in order.

1. JENNIFER KYLE reviews for Hallowed Ground
4 ~ 4.25 STARS
”How do we build a future if we don’t agree on one?”
I expected and/or wished that this story included all POVS of the couples of this series. Especially at the time of the “big tragic scene” I think that would have been chilling and unforgettable. I liked that the story centered-around Josh and Ember but at times it felt monotonous being in Josh’s head. Josh and Ember’s relationship was tested and shaken.
”We stood on the edge of something I couldn’t fathom, and I had no clue how to bring us back. Not without him fighting for us equally as hard.”
Offsetting Josh’s train of thought with the other men and the goings on in their lives would have given me full closure on this great series as well as a break of the same string of thoughts. I really expected to have epilogues on all the couples sadly I’ll learn to be happy with just one.
Regardless, Rebecca Yarros sure knows how to deliver a military story and I recommend friends giving this series a go and meeting not only Josh and Ember but Sam & Grayson and Paisley & Jagger as well!
2. BRANDI reviews for Hallowed Ground
The conclusion of the Flight & Glory series, takes us back to Josh and Ember from Full Measures. These two have been through a lot, and after 2 years together, battling distance, and Josh’s military career, it seems Josh and Ember are finally on the same page, moving forward, and in together. Josh is now a medevac pilot, and graduation is around the corner for Ember.
But it’s not all smooth sailing. Military life is not easy, and when Josh is deployed, Ember is reminded of some harsh realities. Josh, Ember and their relationship will be tested in ways they never prepared for. It’s always been, “You and me against the world,” but the world sure does throw these two some curve balls.
“I don’t care how you come home. I don’t care what parts of you are broken, or bleeding, or… anything, just as long as you come home. As long as your heart is beating, I will want you, do you understand me? I don’t care what happens there as long as you come home.”
Hallowed Ground was an emotional read, heartbreaking, and hopeful. I felt for these characters, the fear, the uncertainty. Rebecca did a wonderful job creating a realistic military romance. My main compliant is that, my patience started wearing a little thin as the story progressed, it seemed like they kept having the same argument over and over. Overall, this was a healing journey, full of ups and downs, with a wonderful cast of characters.
3. BEVERLY reviews for Hallowed Ground
I fell into this series on accident, but from the first book I read I have been hooked. I love this group of pilots and their girls. This is one of those series I am always happy to read more of, but I won’t lie anytime an author creates another book for a couple that is already happy in my mind I get scared. See we first met Josh and Ember in Full Measure and I immediately fell in love with Josh.
Josh and Ember went to high school together. But Josh was the older, hot bad boy and Ember was the quite girl with a crush. So they didn’t really know each other then, but they definitely knew of each other. So in Full Measure we read about them falling in love and it’s emotional, beautiful and completely captivating.
I cannot imagine a future where you’re not mine, because I’m yours in every sense of the word.
So you can imagine where my fear is coming from, these two are my favorite couple. The two people who have survived a long distance relationship, heartache and growing up. They have made it past all of this, so Hallowed Ground terrified me!
I had a good reason to be nervous/scared/terrified, this book absolutely broke me. I was on the edge of my seat and reading at a super fast pace, eager to see what would happen next. Then, I was an emotional wreck. This book had me balling my eyes out. I am not even sure if this is rationale, well no I know it’s not. Regardless, after I looked for a friend to talk to who had read the book and messaged her, while waiting for her response I thought about messaging Rebecca on Facebook. Yes, like a psycho! The good news is, my friend responded quickly enough I talked myself off the ledge.
As you can imagine I stayed up and finished this book in one night and I didn’t love all the parts of the story. Some parts were hard to swallow, some parts broke my heart, and some parts made me wish I could have lived in my fairytale HEA I had created in my mind. That shouldn’t surprise anyone, I am such a baby.
You change me every day, make me want to be a better man for you.
So when I was deciding how to rate this book I had to think about all the parts. I had to think about how true to real life Rebecca’s stories are and how I love how I can feel all the emotions as I read the story. I had to consider how real life isn’t always pretty. I grew up with a father in the military, moving constantly, always knowing I wouldn’t be at a school or city/state for very long. When I consider how this story completely captured what I know of a military life and knowing how Josh and Ember will move forward I have to give credit where it’s due.
If you have read this entire review, which I appreciate because it’s long and rambling, but if you did you know this book deserves at least 5 stars. It’s an original, heart wrenching, emotional and beautiful story about true love. Unconditional, sacrificing, true love!
4. CVZ reviews for Hallowed Ground
Wow…. I just finished this 4th installment in the Flight & Glory series and what an amazing read it was. If you’ve ever contemplated what military couples and families’ lives were like, you MUST take the time to delve into this book. Josh and Ember’s story began in Book 1 and continues in Book 4. The soul deep emotions portrayed in this story could only be executed by none other than the stellar writing of Rebecca Yarros and incorporating her own life experiences. I’ve already been introduced to her books prior to this series and have come to the realization that she writes with passion, raw grit, and does not spare her readers from heartache, tears, and also memorable storytelling.
Many issues are dealt with in this book…duty, honor, deployment, combat injuries, loss, recovery, PTSD, heroism, physical and emotional scars, and guilt, to name a few. How to navigate a relationship amidst these scenarios is a true challenge. Even with pure, unadulterated love, Josh and Ember struggle to navigate through life altering events, unique to military life.
This story defines the true meaning of “hallowed ground” in a profoundly enlightening manner. I find there are always lessons to be learned in Ms. Yarros’ books and readers come away the better for having taken a chance with her stories.
I loved this book. There is only one criticism. The hospitalization portion was unrealistic. A splenectomy does not have a chest incision. No patient would be given one crutch to hobble to the bathroom after a serious thigh wound, fractured arm, and abdominal surgery to remove a spleen after arriving in their room. Male patients are offered a urinal in bed. Also, the idea of having sex soon after an extensive injury and surgery made me want to roll my eyes. NOT HAPPENING! Other than that, the story was believable.
The Audible narration was very well done. Far better than Book 3. Thank you Ms. Yarros for sharing your stellar writing skills that pens amazing stories with military undertones. Looking forward to begin Book 5!
5. MOLLY LEE reviews for Hallowed Ground
Epic love, passion, and strength.
I’m overcome with emotion while sitting down to write this review. This book not only is packed full of love, risks, consequences, and passion, but it is the last in the series, and as such, I can’t help but get a little choked up.
All great series must come to an end. It never gets easier. But Yarros delivered one hell of a parting gift to those of us who are die-hard Flight & Glory fans.
HALLOWED GROUND returns to the core couple who started it all, Josh and Ember. They’ve grown as individuals as well as a couple and we get to revisit them at a crucial point in their lives. All the trials, the separation by space and duty stations, has come to head and they get a taste of what a perfect future could look like. Then, true to military fashion, those plans are turned upside down and send Josh back to Afghanistan, the country that nearly killed him once. Their love is strong, epic even, but it’s hard to know if they’ll survive war.
Yarros brings readers back home when slipping into Josh and Ember’s point of view and it is one incredible welcome. There is a fire between Josh and Ember’s characters that can’t be denied and the obstacles they must overcome to keep that blaze going are intense and heart wrenching. True to Yarros form, there isn’t a dull moment in this novel, or between our characters. They’re so fully constructed, they practically breathe from the pages, and one can only gasp with them as they face each problem, each blow, each passionate embrace that could be their last. It’s exquisite and heart breaking and awe inspiring.
Throughout the Flight & Glory series readers have been invited into the military world with no sugarcoating, filters, or artistic liberties. The author is an expert on the lifestyle and brings an authenticity to the novels that gives readers the rare glimpse of the truth behind the men and women who have to constantly say goodbye to their partners, to have faith that their love can withstand any trial, any war. Yarros punches readers right in the feels every single time and HALLOWED GROUND brings a whole new level of beautiful pain.
Reading the last book in the Flight & Glory series had my heart heavy, as saying goodbye to amazing characters you’ve kept up with and constantly hoped for, ever is. The only comfort I take is the fact that these books are so good, the characters so incredible, that I’ve re-read their stories many times already, and know that when I need them they’ll be there to take me on their epic journeys once again, and each time a new layer of emotion is discovered. Only truly great author’s have this capability—to keep readers pouring over the same lines they’ve seen before and gleaning new depth from it—-and Rebecca Yarros is one of them, one of the greats.
I can’t wait to see what she introduces us to next and I’m grateful for the amazing conclusion she gave to all Flight & Glory lovers in HALLOWED GROUND. It’s everything I didn’t know I needed and above and beyond the description of epic.
6. DONNAC reviews for Hallowed Ground
Hallowed Ground (Flight & Glory #4) by Rebecca Yarros
4 stars!!
“War kills the people we love, either in body or soul, but they’re both equally devastating.”
So, this is the conclusion to the Flight and Glory series and we spend this book reconnecting with Josh and Ember from Full Measures which was the first book in this series. We catch up with these two when they have been together for two years. Josh is now a medevac pilot in the army and Amber is just about to graduate after studying Archaeology. They have just moved in together and Josh is about to deploy. It seems just as they are getting their lives sorted they have to be apart once again. But absence makes the heart grow fonder…
There is no denying the connection that these two have, they are the couple that their friends look up too with a love so strong it was enviable. One thing I never disputed while reading this book was just how much these two loved each other. It was tangible and made this book all the much harder to read.
“When it comes to you, to how much I love you, Josh, I have no morals. No honor. I would lie, cheat, murder, steal, dishonour everything I hold dear if it meant spending my life with you. No measure of duty, or God, or country could ever make up for losing you.”
With any relationship where the forces are involved it is always that fear that this will be the last kiss, the last goodbye, the last cuddle and the separation anxiety that Ember always went through really tore at my heart strings. Knowing that she comes from a military background and had already been through the dreaded officers visit before with regards to her father really brought that fear to a reality for her and it was one experience that she never wanted to go through again. But Ember and Josh both knew the risks involved for both of them and when a love was that strong the reward would always be worth more.
This is a journey for both of them. It is fraught with obstacles and insecurities but what a journey. Josh always wanted what was best for Ember, or at least what he thought was best for Ember and most of the time Ember would disagree but he always made his choices with her at the forefront of his decision making process, even if he was an ass at times…but his heart was in the right place.
“But if it was the right thing to do, why does it feel so wrong.”
Ember always put Josh first, she knew that he needed to be untroubled when he was on duty and did everything that she could to ensure that he always went out into battle with a clear head and a full heart. She was willing to sacrifice everything for him but sometimes those sacrifices were unwanted and this did cause problems for this couple. But it was all a learning curve, they are still young being in their mid-twenties and this was the first really serious relationship for both of them.
“A month ago I was a different man. A month ago, I never would have let her go. But this me? Yeah, well, maybe she was better off running.”
Rebecca Yarros really delivered an emotional and realistic military romance with Hallowed Ground, although I am not experienced, after reading I feel like I have lived it and I now know for sure I couldn’t ever live that life and I admire every single woman whose husband/boyfriend is currently serving. This was emotional, had a fair dose of angst but really brought home the sacrifices that our soldiers and their loved ones make every single day. I loved it.
7. MANDY reviews for Hallowed Ground
Wow! This was fantastic! Josh and December are one of my very favorite book couples ever and I honestly was really nervous when I saw this book was coming out. I was worried that there would be stupid and unnecessary drama because I was happy with how Full Measures ended and I couldn’t imagine how their story could continue. I was wrong – there was no silly drama and there was a lot more to Ember and Josh’s story that needed to be told. This was angsty, emotional, heart breaking, romantic, sweet and even had a little suspense. It was everything I could’ve possibly wanted in a book! I LOVED this so much! I loved what this author did with this story. It was incredibly emotional and I cried a lot but it was such a beautiful conclusion to this series. I can’t wait to read whatever this author writes next!
8. FANNY reviews for Hallowed Ground
* suspiro *
5 Estrellas! Pero si hubiera mas, mas le daria.
9. KELLI C reviews for Hallowed Ground
Josh Walker…the first and the best of Yarros’s Flyboys! He fell hard and fast for December. He put her her back together when her father lost his life…a casualty of an ugly war. On the ice and in her head he healed her heart and made her strong. So strong…she chose to love a soldier. Knowing the consequences and accepting his life she stands tall and proud. Now it will be her turn to put the pieces of a heart back together when once again war rips the best of lives apart. Friendships willl be tested and emotions will run high as the latest casualties of war haunt the man who December vowed to love…FULL MEASURE!
There is no other flyboy that will have you swooning…panting…crying. This story is Yarros’s best since first meeting Josh and Ember. Each scene is palpably raw and the words read so poignant. Cheers for the boys who protect the freedoms of the world but even more to those women who stand behind them with unwavering love, trust and support! This read was so much more than a good book…it was eye opening and gut checking. It was a brutally beautiful romance for the ages♡
10. FLORIPIQUITA reviews for Hallowed Ground
