Editorial Reviews
- “I read this book in one day! I stopped only to cook! It twists and turns right up until the end!” -Debbie, Goodreads review
- “A brilliantly written psychological thriller that has plenty of clues in it but not enough to really catch on to how it shall end.The dialog and humor between the characters is fantastic.” -Sharon, Goodreads review
- “What can I say but ‘I LOVED IT’! I have yet to read a book by this author that I don’t love. Her writing style alone is so engaging and her characters so vivid that once I start reading one of her books I can’t put it down. This book was no different. And the twist was great, as they always are. If you like a story with a shocking turn you will definitely need to read this one!” -Barbara, Goodreads review

not me finishing this in 4 hours 💀
loved this book, super easy read, very engaging. the plot was great – totally different to what I expected. A few twists were predictable but others had me gagging.

6 people
6 days
6 person minivan
666 is the number of the devil. And so it begins …
This was a quick, fun read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Six people start off on what should be an east journey and it ends up anything but. Chapters alternate between Claire and “Anonymous”. Anonymous is the problem, but we don’t yet know who that is. I guessed only part of the end. I thought Claire was a bit whiny, not the sharpest pencil in the box. I found most of the characters likable and one character I wanted to shoot myself. The pace was steady, but started a bit slow. Overall, I liked the book and I’d recommend it if you aren’t looking for a complex, intellectual thriller.

This is my review of One By One.
This is an intense drama where six friends head to a big cabin in the woods for a relaxing week-long vacation. Claire thought this would be a break from the stresses of work and raising her young children. A chance to repair her damaged marriage.
The first group consist of Claire and Noah who met in college, have two kids, and are only staying together for the kids. Claire doesn’t feel that their damaged marriage will last through the trip.
The second group consists of Lindsey who has just met Warner, and will introduce him to the other groups.
Jack, Noah’s best friend who both went to college together, and Jack’s wife, Michelle, a divorce attorney, are the third couple in the group.
The chapters alternate between Clair’s POV and Anonymous.
Then Claire’s minivan breaks down on a lonely dirt road. With no cell reception, the group has no choice but to hike the rest of the way to their hotel.
They are soon lost in the woods, and as they steer deeper into the woods, one by one of the members are struck down mysteriously.
One by one, they will get what they deserve…
One of the six is responsible for the twists and mishaps in their trip.
Only one of them will return home alive…and Claire must figure it out if she wants to ever see her kids again.
This suspenseful mystery novel had me hooked from the very first page. It kept me guessing all the way to the end.
4. MICHELLE reviews for One By One
One by One is a murder mystery that tells the story of six friends who get lost in the woods and begin being picked off one by one.
These day, it’s very hard to get lost in the woods. And it’s even harder to stay lost ….Um, nope, that is not true.
This was my first Freida McFadden novel and I really enjoyed it. The six friends were a little on the dumb side when it came to basic survival. A few times I rolled my eyes as they seemed to eager to get themselves more and more lost. But I chalked that up to people who’ve never been out of the city and manipulation.
The writing was addictive. Once I picked it up I didn’t want to put it back down. I’m definitely going to grab more of McFadden’s work the next time I’m at the bookstore.
5. DEBC reviews for One By One
“One By One” Good book
First of all, I am a huge fan of Freida McFadden’s books. Her books are never boring and a quick read, the kind you keep saying, “Just one more chapter,” and then 10 chapters later you realize you stayed up way too late past your bedtime. This book was good, but honestly not, in my opinion, as good as some of her other books. A lot of things did not really make sense to me. Why the trip in the first place when it seems no one wanted to really be there with the person they were with more or less. And one character that was supposedly dead… not doing a name here to spoil… they could not tell the person was still alive? I mean come on. And then the ending when the culprit was revealed… it did not make sense to me because the person did not have a really good reason for doing what they did. It was a flimsy reason that made no sense for the rage and carnage. There were a lot of things that did not make sense and asked you to suspend logic and common sense, which kind of dampened the thrill for me. Plus, I figured out one of the culprits 3/4 of the way through so that was not a surprise. A good book but just not her best work I think.
6. LYNDSAY PARKER reviews for One By One
Can’t put down thriller
One by One is a psychological thriller about 3 couples heading on a vacation in the woods.
Claire, is trapped. Her husband has become a complete stranger. She’s overwhelmed with the daily demands of being a mom. A week of hikes and jacuzzi tubs what could be more relaxing?
But when their van breaks down unexpectedly, leaving them stranded with no cell phone reception, their only option is to hike back to civilization.
However, one by one something tragic happens to each of them. Until only one of them is left.
I absolutely love Freida McFaddens thrillers. They captivate you from the first line and you cannot put them down, this one was no different!
I enjoyed how it was two different voices, Claire’s and an anonymous person.
In true Freida fashion, the book had so many different twists and turns that just when I thought I had it figured out something happened and I was completely thrown off again.
While there was some expletive language, it wasn’t much and there was only 1 “romantic” moment between a married couple.
Overall, if you love a good thriller that will keep you up all night I would highly recommend this one!
Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to review this book!
7. ANDRIA BARTA reviews for One By One
Will recommend this book to everyone!
Once again, Freida has gotten me hooked so far deep into a book, I was unable to put it down. I should be sleeping right now, but I just had to finish this book to figure out who the bad guy was.
Six people set off to have, what should be a relaxing and fun getaway. Little do they know what they have in store for them. Four of the six in the group have been close friends for a long time, so it should be a fun trip, right? Right away the trip starts off rocky, with one of the couples getting into an argument, so tensions are already high and the vibe is already awkward. Then the car breaks down and the group is forced to try and find their way to the hotel that they are staying at, but instead, they get lost in the woods where the group starts to dwindle down. But what is happening out there to cause this?
The chapters are just the right length, and they alternate between Claire and Anonymous. Pretty early on, I thought I had figured out who Anonymous was. I was actually pretty confident in who I thought Anonymous was. Boy was I dead wrong!
I rated this book at 4.5/5 stars. The only reason it didn’t get the full 5 stars is because I didn’t want the book to end. I was that hooked into it. If you are looking for a page turner that you will not be able to put down, then this is the book for you. If twists, turns and shocks are your favorite things in a book, then prepare for the whiplash that you will get from reading this book.
Thank you to Freida for writing, yet another amazing book. Also a huge thanks to Poison Pen Publishing for allowing me to read this ahead of time!
8. TERESA FRONEK reviews for One By One
Fantastic who-dun-it!
I absolutely love Freida McFadden books and One By One may be one of her very best! From the beginning she keeps us guessing by dropping little clues along the way and by the time we get to the end, we’re dizzy with anticipation and shock! I won’t reveal any spoilers but suffice it to say that this book had me turned around repeatedly and it wasn’t until the last page, literally, that I finally was pleasurably relieved at the finale!
9. PROVIN MARTIN reviews for One By One
You know when you ‘ discover’ a new author and you have to read everything they’ve ever written immediately? That’s where I’m at with McFadden.
A group of friends go on a trip, but they never make it to their destination. One by one they get killed while trying to navigate from their car to their destination. McFadden is amazing at writing twisting/thrilling tales that are full of surprises, turns, misdirection and unpredictable endings. So grab a McFadden book , your emotional support blanket, favorite pet, and a glass of your favorite beverage before buckling up and enjoying the ride!
10. WHITNEY ERWIN reviews for One By One
Entertaining and twisty! 3 couples head off in a minivan on vacation together. The minivan breaks down and they get stranded in the woods. One by one, the 6 of them die or disappear. This one kept me guessing till the very end. It was very fast paced which I enjoyed. The characters were all very unlikeable, but it worked well for the book. Overall, pretty enjoyable! 3.5 stars rounded to 4.
Thank you, Poisoned Pen Press and Net Galley for a copy in return for my honest review.
III. One By One Quotes by Freida McFadden
The best book quotes from One By One by Freida McFadden
“Heat causes molecules to disperse, so each breath takes in less oxygen.”
“Then again, there’s another reason why I want to go on this trip. And anyway, the reservation is nonrefundable.”
“That’s why mosquitoes bite you so often,” Warner says. “Mosquitoes love type O blood.”
“Two people can’t keep a secret,” she says. “Not unless one of them is dead. It’s just a fact. I always work alone.”
“At that point, even though we had been dating only a few months, I was beginning to think he was the man I wanted to spend my life with.”
“My mother was a religious woman. That’s how I know that on the sixth day, both man and serpent were created. You know—the snake that eventually convinced Adam and Eve to eat the forbidden fruit and got them kicked out of the Garden of Eden forever? That’s why the number six represents both man and the evil that weakens him.”
“Together, we made a plan. It started out with a phony map and a knife that could carve a tree to look like animal claws.”
“Jack isn’t the man I thought he was. How could I have made such a terrible mistake? I can’t believe it took nearly dying to realize it.”
“It seems like the obvious choice to stay with Jack, but Noah is my husband. Maybe I’ve grown to hate him, but I trust him.”
“Michelle!” I call out. “MICHELLE!” No answer. We’ve been looking for Michelle for the last thirty minutes.”
“It looks like I’m stuck. This trip is happening. But I’m going to take Lindsay’s advice. As soon as we get back to Castle Pines, I’m telling Noah it’s over.”
“But the fact that this is happening with Jack… That’s the part I think would kill him. His best friend. One of his only friends.”
“For the last week, Emma has crawled into our queen-sized bed every single night to sleep. Fortunately, Noah and I sleep with a gap the size of the Atlantic Ocean between us.”
“At the end of this week, only one of us will make it home alive.”
“We finally get to meet Warner! Very exciting!” Lindsay’s porcelain skin flushes with happiness. “I can’t wait for you to meet him, Claire. He’s… well, he’s amazing. I really think he’s the one.” “Is this the doctor?” Noah asks. He sounds utterly disinterested, but at least he’s being polite. She tucks a loose strand of her ash blonde hair behind her ear. “He’s a surgeon.”
“It was Warner’s idea to put the magnet in Noah’s sweatshirt, in that zippered pocket where he was unlikely to look. I took the magnet right off their refrigerator when I was visiting.”
“To my surprise, a little silver brick falls out. I recognize it instantly. It’s one of the really strong refrigerator magnets Noah bought when Emma and Aidan’s drawings kept falling off the fridge. But why did he have a magnet in his sweatshirt? What had he been planning to do with it?”
“Well, I got worried because Daddy said he was going to take that hike.” “Hike? You mean go fishing.” “Nuh uh.” She licks soup off her fingers. “Hike. In the woods.”
“She was passionate about right and wrong, especially when it came to the opposite sex. Of course, when I looked back, all my memories of her took on a new light. When we were in college, we were sharing some beers outside a bar and some guy approached us and wouldn’t take no for an answer. Lindsay broke her beer bottle against the wall and shoved the jagged edge close to the guy’s neck. He took off quickly after that.”
“I cover my mouth, unable to believe what I’m hearing. Lindsay killed Ted all those years ago. Because of me.”
“Yes, he had done something awful. But he paid the price.”
“I’m impressed he had the nerve. You couldn’t get me in a truck with a dead guy if you paid me a million bucks.”
“I took a step back as I watched my father kiss my mother’s sister.”
“I was dimly aware of the newscasters talking. A child disappeared from a playground downtown.”
“It was nearly an hour later when he finally started up the steps to the second floor. I hadn’t budged in all that time. It was only when he got to the top that he saw me standing there.”
“We had to move after you gouged the eye out of that McCormick kid.”
“I will never forget the look on my mom’s face when she discovered what I had done to that cat. All the color had drained from her cheeks and she clasped a hand over her mouth as her legs gave way beneath her. I hadn’t been able to suppress a smile, even when she slapped me hard enough to leave a mark.”
“I reached out and shoved my dad as hard as I could. Under other circumstances, he would’ve fallen and maybe bruised a hip. But my father was standing at the edge of the staircase. My shove threw him off balance. His arms flailed for a moment, then down he went.”
“A chilling smile plays on Warner’s lips. “Well, I can’t entirely take credit.”
“life, I had boobs. Ted couldn’t keep his grimy paws off me.”
“It’s so good to finally meet you, Lindsay!” she cried. I stood there stiffly, accepting her unprompted hug. “It’s good to meet you too.” Claire was a hugger. It was one of the things I learned about her during our four years as roommates.”
“Because somebody else is pointing a gun at his head. Oh my God.”
“He’s just sitting there in the passenger seat, a bullet hole in his forehead. No way an animal did that. “No…” I clasp a hand over my mouth and back away from the truck. “No… No no no no no…”
“I stare at him, trying to read the expression on his face. Lindsay and Jack both tried to convince me that he knew, but I didn’t believe it. They were right.”
“It seems like the obvious choice to stay with Jack, but Noah is my husband. Maybe I’ve grown to hate him, but I trust him.”
“Jack isn’t the man I thought he was. How could I have made such a terrible mistake? I can’t believe it took nearly dying to realize it.”
