She’s looking for the perfect man. He’s looking for the perfect victim.

Sydney Shaw, like every single woman in New York, has terrible luck with dating. She’s seen it all: men who lie in their dating profile, men who stick her with the dinner bill, and worst of all, men who can’t shut up about their mothers. But finally, she hits the jackpot.

Her new boyfriend is utterly perfect. He’s charming, handsome, and works as a doctor at a local hospital. Sydney is swept off her feet.

Then the brutal murder of a young woman―the latest in a string of deaths across the coast―confounds police. The primary suspect? A mystery man who dates his victims before he kills them.

Sydney should feel safe. After all, she is dating the guy of her dreams. But she can’t shake her own suspicions that the perfect man may not be as perfect as he seems. Because someone is watching her every move, and if she doesn’t get to the truth, she’ll be the killer’s next victim…

1. SHEI reviews for The Boyfriend

“After all, the less time I spend with the chief of police, the better.”

bitches, I don’t know if my slump is cured but holy shit I read this in 3 hours lol. Freida never fails to make me read. Her books are no masterpieces, but if you chill and read they are the definition of FUN.

➷ plot:

we follow two timelines, present timeline, with Sydney as our main character, she is tired of going into fail dates, and one day she bumps into this perfect guy, and she thinks she found the one, but is he really as perfect as it seems ?

On the other hand, past timeline we follow Tom, a high school boy that is in love with a classmate, Daisy. He is obsessed with her and wants to make her his girlfriend.

I tried to explain the plot the less spoilery possible! It doesn’t seem much but the less you know in Freida’s books, the better!

➷ my thoughts:

since it’s a thriller I never really talk about the characters or other important things to avoid ruining the plot for other people.

I really liked and enjoyed this book. Do I think is that good to have a 4 star rating? Probably not, but god I HAD FUN. And the plot twist GOT ME. I was so sure I got Freida this time but she said, not today bitch, I’m getting you.

The book keeps you suspecting everyone, trying to connect the dots and the timelines, with an incredible EASY writing and pace to follow. My main advice on this authors books is to flow, to think the less amount of theories possible and just enjoy the twisted ride.

I will keep reading all the books she releases. Not all of them are good, but they just FLY by.

if someone wants to start reading Freida, I would recommend to start with the housemaid ( only the first book tho) and never lie.

2. TANU reviews for The Boyfriend

👑THE QUEEN IS BACK YA’LL!!!!👑

The way i devoured this book in a couple of hours is proof enough of how good it was. It has been proved. Freida never sleeps and throws out banging thrillers one after the other. Her writing itself is enough for you to not stop reading. It just sucks you in. And to top that off her twists are mind blowing. This was another one of her classic thrillers with:

🗡️ Complex characters🧑‍🤝‍🧑
🗡️ Dual timelines⌚
🗡️ TWIST i never saw coming 🤯
🗡️ Fast paced 🏃‍♀️
🗡️ Killer Epilogue 🤭

I won’t lie i did think by the halfway point that it all seems pretty obvious and that this was like a lot other thillers i’ve read before. I was going to give it a 3 star at most. One thing I did not like is how the women are portrayed to be ignoring all the red flags and blindly trusting the guy.

But i should know not to doubt Freida or judge her books atleast until i read the whole thing. The twist just changed my entire perspective of this and i won’t stop gushing. I just can’t. Everyone needs to read this rn!! Slump or no slump it’ll get you back on track and remind you why we love reading so damn much!!📚

~~~~~~~
girl you just released a book and you already have two more lined up😭like I really wanna read all of them keep em coming.. But you do sleep and do other things right??? Where do all these fantastic plots come from? 😭🥰 anyhow can’t wait to read this one❤
3. DENNIS reviews for The Boyfriend
THE BOYFRIEND is my favorite Freida McFadden to date. I said what I said. I’ve really been enjoying thrillers that infuse dating/romance/dark f’d up partners lately (I wonder why) and THE BOYFRIEND fits the bill! The story is centered around Sydney Shaw, a mid-30s year old woman living in New York trying to navigate online dating. When a date goes awry, Sydney ends up meeting someone who ends up being everything she’d want in a relationship. He is charming, handsome, confident, and a physician. As the two begin to date, Sydney starts suspecting that her new relationship isn’t as stable as she thought it was, especially when a string of deaths start popping up. These murders involve women around her age demographic.
I almost gave this book 5 stars because it was so much fun, but I immediately clocked what was going to happen (for the most part) early on. That didn’t take away from my enjoyment, but I wish the secrets were held a bit better. This book is juicy and fun in all the best ways, and I did get tricked with one of the twists, so I was pleasantly surprised at some of the developments. This is an easy read for sure and won’t be anything you haven’t seen before in thrillers, but the way the story is told really is a fun journey. I definitely would recommend any Freida fans to pick this one up because it really is a fun, mindless, escape. I definitely needed this read to take my mind of ~life~ lately. This book will be perfect for a vacation read or a rainy day read because you will get lost in the story. I have mixed opinions about this author, but I definitely do not with THE BOYFRIEND.
4. CELESTE VELOCCI reviews for The Boyfriend
4.5⭐️ my girl Freida does it again! I usually can’t guess her twists but I did guess most of them in her last book The Teacher so I was hoping to be stumped this time around. I had two working theories throughout the entire book and in the end I was wrong! As much as I love being an amateur sleuth it’s always nice to not guess the plot twist in the end!
In true Freida fashion this was another binge worthy popcorn thriller that had me glued to my kindle. From the moment I picked it up I couldn’t put it down. Definitely recommend it if you’re looking for a palette cleanser thriller with some slasher vibes for spooky season!
5. SUGARCANE MARKET BOUTIQUE reviews for The Boyfriend
The Queen of Psychological Thrillers Does It Again – The Boyfriend is a Must-Read!
Freida McFadden has once again proven why she is the reigning Queen of Psychological Thrillers! As someone who has devoured all of her books, I can confidently say that The Boyfriend is her most gripping and twisted story yet. Just when I thought she couldn’t possibly outdo herself, this book completely floored me with its suspense, tension, and mind-bending twists.
The story pulls you in from the very first page and keeps you on edge until the shocking finale. McFadden’s talent for creating complex, unreliable characters shines here, leaving you questioning everything and everyone. The pacing is perfect; I found myself unable to put the book down, desperate to unravel the mystery.
Every chapter had me guessing, and just when I thought I had things figured out, McFadden expertly threw in another twist that left me stunned. The psychological tension in this book is palpable—it plays with your mind in the best possible way, keeping you hooked right until the explosive ending.
I’ve read all of Freida McFadden’s books, and they keep getting better and more unpredictable with each new release. Her writing is sharp, her plots are ingeniously crafted, and she has a unique ability to delve into the darkest corners of the human psyche.
I cannot wait to get my hands on her next release, The Crash, coming in January 2025! If it’s anything like The Boyfriend, I know it will be another unmissable thriller. Freida McFadden is a master at her craft, and The Boyfriend is a perfect example of why she continues to dominate the psychological thriller genre. Highly recommend!
6. BARBDEBLOIS reviews for The Boyfriend
How does Freida McFadden keep shocking me EVERY.SINGLE.TIME??
Oh my God, did this book completely catch me off guard! I don’t know how she does it, but this may be my Favorite Freida McFadden book yet. However, I’m pretty sure I say that after every single book I’ve read of hers. I loved this book so much! I could not put it down and I read it straight through. I never know what to expect when I read one of her books, but the twist in this one really got me, and when I say “you will not see the twist coming” take my word for it, you will definitely be shaking your head and you will NEVER guess the twist or the ending, I promise you that there is just no way. If you like psychological thrillers, get this book ASAP because I can assure you that this is a book not to be missed. And if you are just starting to read Freida’s books, I am so jealous and I envy you so much, because you have SO MANY GREAT BOOKS AHEAD OF YOU TO READ, written BY my absolute favorite author. I read so many really good books, so to call ANYONE my favorite author is shocking, even to me. But she honestly is my fave. I’m a bit of a fan girl, I’m not gonna lie. Thanks Freida for another shocking read. I will impatiently wait for your next great book, and I have no doubt that after I read it I will once again proclaim that it is my favorite book yet, written by my favorite author. Because I’m sure it will be!
7. MK reviews for The Boyfriend
Well Ms. Freida has done it again. This my friends was a page turner like she does with all of her books. I told my mom last night while in the middle of the book I couldn’t put it down. She said well I can’t wait to read. She’s a big fan as much as me. I don’t even know where it start as this one truly through me for a loop.
I have read all, but maybe one or two from early on. But that said this one was truly amazing. It was mind-blowing.
When I thought I had things figured out I was wrong. Oh but one thing I was right about was the mystery man who Sydney sees again. That I had a feeling. I won’t say anything more.
I did however miss something in the book, and shocked me so much at the end. That ladies tells me I was flipping the pages too fast.
One of my favorite parts was at the end. I won’t say anything else and ruin it.
It’s a must read as are the books before it. Happy Reading all….until her next book.
I can’t wait Freida McFadden….
8. LEIGH CALLAWAY reviews for The Boyfriend
WOULD YOU JUST STOP, ALREADY??
When, WHEN am I going to accept that I’ll never figure out where these books are headed? Come on, McFadden! You’re crushing my self-esteem. Each time, I’ll think, “Ah HA!!! I got it!” And each time, I’m so freaking wrong.
It’s not as if I’m dense, either. I mean, I’m a crazy reader! (Not crazy as in psycho, just crazy in the prolific sense.) As much time as I spend reading thrillers, I keep thinking one day, ONE DAY, I’m gonna beat this ending to the punch! I mean, It’s gonna happen!!
Well, maybe it could possibly occur. Likely not. Okay, very incredibly unlikely. *Sigh.* FINE. I’m worried I’ll never beat you at this, McFadden. But I’M having the last laugh here! Because I’m having the best time ever!! You just keep doing your thing, and I’ll do mine.
You rock!! I’ve never been let down yet, and truthfully, I’ll be wildly disappointed if it ever happens. (But I’m willing to bet I’m completely safe on that score.)
9. AMINA reviews for The Boyfriend
Wow, what a rollercoaster in true McFadden fashion. The ending is an insane reveal. When your head starts to spin–what you thought was the trajectory turns upside down, flips over your head, and leaves you reeling. What the heck? I thought I had it in the bag!
Sidney Shaw is desperate to find the one. She’s close to 40, her mother is on her case, and she’s anxious. After meeting a man who puts her down and makes her uncomfortable, she’s had it with dating, until she meets the potential ‘one’…
He’s a doctor, handsome, and charming. This is too good to be true.
Sidney’s ex is the police chief, and she’s become privy to a slew of murders in the area. The prime suspect is a man who dates and kills. Sidney feels safe, in the perfect arms of a true gentleman, except he doesn’t want to meet her friends, strangely, his phone doesn’t ring when she calls it, and he has an obsession with blood. All weird stuff, right?
The story is told from two perspectives: Sidney’s and Tom’s. We go back in time, meeting Tom’s obsessive crush, best friend, and parents. Tom comes from a toxic home, with an abusive father. How will that affect Tom as an adult? He always tried to protect his mother, was it enough?
My little caveat–it was insufferable reading McFadden’s take on a lost woman. ‘Lost’ is a kind word. There has to be a way around the bimbo lady. The man she’s dating does strange things, but it’s okay—overlook it, right? Eh… it wasn’t believable, not in 2024. I rolled my eyes more than once–Sidney wake up!
The ending though–jaw on the floor, gasping, worth the wait moment. Everything you think you thought, isn’t That was exactly how it went.
4/5 stars for a twisty ending and worth the wait.
10. TIFFANY reviews for The Boyfriend
Managed to snag the audio book so of course I already started reading this one again last night. I love hearing the characters come alive. Honestly, this one is such a hard one to rate because I 100% figured out all the twists but after finishing it a second time I can truly say I enjoyed it, loved it, would reread it, and definitely recommend it! So rounding this up to a five after all! 😂🤷🏻‍♀️✨
Happy Pub Day!!!! I have to say, this is one of my favorite Freida books so far.
The plotline is fantastic, the characters are a lot of fun, and I really enjoyed the dual point of view and timeline. The suspense in this book had me hooked from the very first page. I couldn’t stop reading and finished it in less than 24 hours, which is typical for a Freida book. She always knows how to captivate her readers.
The only reason I didn’t give it a full five stars is that I figured out the twists earlier than I would have liked. I love being completely stumped by a book, so I was a little disappointed in that aspect. I also hoped for a more twisted epilogue….it must be all these dang morally grey books polluting my mind. 😆
Nevertheless, it was still an enjoyable read. In true Freida fashion, she delivered a fast-paced, unputdownable thriller. A solid four stars! Highly recommend! ✨
The Boyfriend Quotes by Freida McFadden
The best book quotes from The Boyfriend by Freida McFadden
“The reason I feel connected to Daisy is because she’s exactly like me.”
“A Diet Coke?” Kevin seems affronted. “That’s boring. Get a real drink.”
“But he’s in his mid-thirties and still single. So there must be something wrong with him. Probably serious commitment issues, like half the other single guys in their thirties.”
“I like to carry all my textbooks with me.” She squints at me. “Is it too heavy for you?” “No. No. Of course not.”
“She looks very pleased by this turn of events. Much more so, I suspect, than if I sliced through her jugular with a knife.”
“All I want is a decent man who doesn’t have a drinking or a gambling problem, who is fun to talk to, who has a nice smile, and who likes me as much as I like him.”
“Those are the last words he hears before I cut his throat.”
“I tend to like tall men, but he badly needs a little meat on his bones. It feels like I’m walking next to a broomstick.”
“Wait. My arms are too flabby? Did he really just say that to me?”
“Thanks for dinner.” “Sure thing.” Kevin slides the check across the table to me. “Your share comes to thirty-eight dollars.”
“I miss having a boyfriend. I miss cuddling on the sofa. I miss having a warm body next to me in my bed every night as I drift off to sleep. I miss… Well, you know. That.”
“He doesn’t want me to blow it? Is this guy for real? I block his profile and report it to Cynch. I’m irritated that he was even allowed to sign up under another profile.”
“I wish we had another bottle. I need to keep another in the house, just in case any more of my close friends are murdered in the near future.”
“walking skeleton that put on a pair of blue jeans and a T-shirt and got a face full of acne.”
“A pyramid scheme!” Kevin chuckles. “Why would you think that?” “Because I am an accountant and I know what a pyramid scheme is?” “No, you just don’t understand,” he insists. “Look, I’m trying to do you a favor, Sydney. You’ve got this super-boring job crunching numbers all day. Wouldn’t you rather make a few sales a year and relax the rest of the time on your own luxury vacation property?”
“You will never hurt her again,” I say. Those are the last words he hears before I cut his throat.”
“We exchange looks, and Gretchen spits the chocolate back into her hand. “Oh my God!” she cries. “It’s like eating a square of dirt!”
“Romance novels give you an extremely unrealistic concept of romance. If”
“It feels like a new word needs to be created to encompass the last two hours spent in my bedroom. Like, I don’t know…mind-blowingly…unbecredifabulous.”
“That really was amazing,” I say. “I feel like I need a cigarette or something, even though I don’t actually smoke.”
“But at the same time, if he’s never lived with a woman by his age, that’s also a red flag.”
“While I am eating my beef chow fun, debating if I should take a Tums now or after the meal is over,”
“But on the other hand, it wouldn’t be the most shocking thing in the world. It wouldn’t be like finding out, I don’t know, that my mom is a serial killer.”
“Romance novels give you an extremely unrealistic concept of romance. If I were a character in one of those books, our meet-cute would have quickly been followed by Mystery Man ripping off his T-shirt to reveal gleaming, rock-hard abs and then thrusting his throbbing loins against me.”
“Right, and I’ve dated pretty much all of them,” Bonnie points out. “He’s not one of them—I promise you. I deserve a decent guy after all my crappy dates.”
“Why is dating so hard? Why can’t I just find a great guy, marry him, and live happily ever after? Is that really too much to ask for?”
“And I’m terrified that the moment I get her alone, I will wrap my fingers around her pretty, white neck and squeeze the life out of her.”
“If I grabbed her head and gave it a solid twist to the left, I could break her neck. It wouldn’t even be hard to do.”
“I have spent the last half hour scrolling through Facebook while contemplating deleting Facebook. I used to enjoy it, but every single one of my friends’ posts now seems to consist of babies upon babies. Is anyone besides me not procreating right now?”
