1. JAYNE reviews for The Ex
“The Ex” should not be “ex-ed” off your “to read” list.
It’s a fast-paced and ultra-compelling book that will make you think twice before dating any person, even if he/she is a HD (hot doctor).
I especially enjoyed the way the author structured the book with alternating POVs of a HD’s new girlfriend and his ex-girlfriend.
The book was a 5-star read for the first 80% of the book.
Unfortunately, the book’s ending was convoluted and deeply flawed. To avoid spoilers, additional details are not being provided.
I listened to the audiobook read by narrator Nicol Zanzarella. Even though the narrator did an outstanding job, the book would have benefited from two different narrators since it was told from two POVs.
This is my second book by author Freida McFadden and I look forward to listening to future titles by this author.
2. TANYA reviews for The Ex
The prologue was sufficient for me to start rooting for the heroine or should I say anti heroine. The twist reminded me of Rock Paper Scissors. It’s rare that you get a lot of satisfaction with the way books end and omg the ending was served to perfection.
*spoiler alert*
Imagine being with a person for 10 years and they just decide you’re not working for them after 10 freaking years and choose a busy restaurant to dump you in. I cringed so hard when our poor girl thought she was getting proposed initially *sigh* Joel is a jerk

This is my review of The Ex.
Cassie, who runs a used bookstore, thinks she has met the perfect man…that she’ll spend the rest of her life with…have children and grow old with.
Her perfect man is Joel, an emergency room physician who is sweet, handsome, romantic, and best of all, he’s crazy about Cassie.
But it wasn’t to be when Joel suddenly sprang the news on her that he wanted to “move forward”, and tells her their relationship wasn’t working for him anymore.
Cassie is devastated with this bad news. She knows about his perfect ex-girlfriend, Francesca. The beautiful, brilliant chef, beloved by all his friends. But she thinks Francesca is out of the picture. She thinks Francesca is gone for good…but is she?
The chapters alternate between, “The New Girl” (Cassie), and “The Ex” (Francesca), and makes it easy to follow the characters and the storyline.
And then without providing any spoilers, there is a major reveal/twist a few chapters from the end of the book that blew me away. At first, I have to admit that I was confused and had to go back and reread the passages, to check that I hadn’t missed anything…and then everything comes together right at the end. What a twist, and one that I never saw coming!
This is what I love about Freida’s books…you never can underestimate where this author will take you. I am still at a loss and processing everything. So good!
4. JEYSA RIGNEY reviews for The Ex
I was CONFUSED!
The Ex is another good book with many twists as Freida is known for.
Cassie is just your everyday bookworm who inherited a bookstore no less that she runs with her friend Zoe. She meets Joel, a doctor that comes into the bookstore. Eventually, the two go on a date not realizing they both have secrets from their past that they don’t want the other to know.
Joel, use to date Francesca who is best friends with Lydia. Lydia does NOT like Cassie. Actually, that’s an understatement. Anna who is friends with Joel and Lydia also has secrets.
Since Joel and Cassie start dating Cassie feels like someone has been following her. And when her bookstore and home is vandalized she now knows someone is but who could it be? Is it Francesca? Well, there is a secret about Francesca that Cassie doesn’t know yet…
5. JESSE 2019 reviews for The Ex
I was enjoying the book, although as I was reading, I got confused at the part where Francesco was dating Dean, then it goes into Dean being Anna’s husband. I couldn’t figure that out. I found with this Author she tends to move around with the characters. I really enjoy her books and will continue to read them.
6. CYNDEE JILL MADY reviews for The Ex
Mastery of Perspective
Always expect the unexpected with Frieda McFadden, and she does not disappoint in The Ex. Moving seamlessly and methodically from third person to 1st person where at the end of the book, we find out how her interwoven perpectives play
7. G.B. reviews for The Ex
I’ve read multiple books from this auther and have loved all of them. This one hit home a bit. I think multiple ladies can relate to being broken up with and not understanding why. I obviously didn’t take things to the extream like the main character, but all the emotions felt the same and very real. By far this book had my head turning and I was on my toes. Like always, a great page turner.
8. VIVIAN SCHNEIDER reviews for The Ex
Great thriller! You won’t be able to put it down!
Freida did it again!!! What a great novel! I would never expect the twist towards the end. I was caught off guard and breathless. What an ingenious development. Definitely would recommend if you like a good psychological thriller. You won’t be disappointed with any of Freida’s book. But this was one of my favorites:-)
9. JENNA MOQUIN reviews for The Ex
Great thriller with a twist! This was a total page-turner that kept me guessing throughout! Sharp, funny, and suspenseful, with a twist I didn’t see coming. I thoroughly enjoyed Freida McFadden’s last book The Surrogate Mother, and I liked this one even more. Highly recommended!
10. OBSIDIAN reviews for The Ex
Not a bad thriller. I loved the twists. I only gave it four stars though because it feels similar to another ending by this author I just read. I have a hard time with people figuring out a murderer and just tra la laing afterwards.
Full review: I loved how this was set up, you follow a man named Joel’s ex, Franchesca, and his current girlfriend, Cassie. We quickly find out that Joel’s ex has been with him for about 10 years, she’s ready to get married and thinks he is going to propose, however, he breaks up with her. She has a hard time moving on and starts some light stalking of Cassie.
Cassie though is looking for some Wuthering Heights type of love. Aside here, did no one read that book and find Heathcliff and Caty toxic? Just me? Anyhoo, Cassie likes Joel, but is not sure he’s the one. But she starts to like him more and more while hiding a secret from Joel and dealing with minor vandalism to her bookstore. Cassie then starts to wonder if Joel’s ex has something to do with things.
There’s secondary characters in this one, Cassie’s bookstore partner and former friends of Franchesca. I thought they were developed pretty well. I also thought the flow and dialogue worked. The big reason why I only gave this four stars is that the twist/reveal was brilliantly done, but the ending with [redacted] realizing what happened and keeping quiet did not feel right to me at all.
III. The Ex Quotes by Freida McFadden
The best book quotes from The Ex by Freida McFadden
“And she can’t risk a cop getting a look at what’s in her apartment. That would potentially be… bad. Very bad.”
“Don’t get old. How do you keep from getting old? Everyone ages, so the only way to keep from getting old is to die young.”
“And if they come inside, they might find what Grandpa Marv left behind.”
“she’s got one hand on a stroller that holds an adorable little boy. The boy’s soft blond curls make my ovaries eject three eggs at once. I can feel it happening.”
“They say there’s a thin line between love and hate. In those few seconds between when Joel stood up and when the door to the restaurant slammed behind him, my love for Joel Broder started to morph into hatred.”
“It’s too easy to plunk down my credit card, knowing I can deal with the bill at another time in the future.”
“The girl’s mouth drops open. At first, Cassie is certain she’s just going to take it, but it seems like the girl’s had a rough morning with one too many picky customers, because she pulls the muffin off the counter, throws it on the floor, and says to Lydia, “Get out.”
“I need to either do something to get rid of Olive or I need to get the hell over it.”
“Cassie hears the screaming as she backs away from the closet. It takes her a moment to identify the voice as her own.”
“It was the violin that decided me,” Lydia says. “It’s because of that incredibly thoughtful present that we made Francesca Violet’s godmother.” Francesca is Violet’s… what?”
“It took all my self-restraint not to drag him upstairs by his collar. Nonna would have cheered me on.”
“back. All I wanted was to even the score. I never meant to kill anyone. I swear.”
“Getting dumped so I completely lose my appetite. I don’t say that though. “Good genes, I guess.”
“I’d never considered myself a weak woman. Begging a man not to leave me—I still feel the sting of humiliation from that one.”
“Or that’s what he told me. After the fact, I have to wonder.”
“I think she’s the one who broke into my store,” Cassie says before she loses her nerve. “She threw paint on the door. She wrote ‘slut’ on the door to my apartment. And… she’s been calling me on the phone and hanging up. Or worse.”
“She wonders if she will in the near future. She wonders how he’ll react when and if he learns her secrets.”
“But she can’t shake the feeling that one of these days, the policeman will be coming here with a warrant for her arrest.”
“I can’t describe how it feels to see the man you love—the man you were certain you would marry and spend the rest of your life with—kissing another woman. It’s a sick, horrible feeling, like the entire world is falling out from under me.”
“should delete the app. I definitely should. It’s not healthy to be tracking my ex-boyfriend around the city. I’m no psychologist, but I know that much. I’ll delete it. Soon.”
“Is that why you got your buddy to ask me out?” Joel blinks a few times. “What are you talking about?” Either he’s telling the truth or he’s a fantastic actor. I study his face, searching for a flicker of jealousy. There’s none.”
“When he’s gone, Cassie gets that now-familiar rush of relief every time a police officer leaves her store without snapping handcuffs on her.”
“worries he might look at her differently if he knew the whole truth.”
“But in a courtroom, with that same hair pulled back into a severe bun, her blue eyes staring daggers into the witness she’s cross-examining, I’d imagine she’s terrifying.”
“cop getting a look at what’s in her apartment. That would potentially be… bad. Very bad.”
“I step inside the apartment and she regards me coolly. She folds her arms across her chest and stands up an inch straighter, as if she didn’t already tower over me. “Hello, Anna,” she says.”
“When we’re together, the conversation just flows.”
“It’s a Friday evening, and I’m sitting on the sofa, eating chicken parmigiana with Nonna and watching the news.”
